Nice Place Nice Price
I have stayed at this place twice now and enjoyed my visits each time. It is very comfortable and cool and the service is not bad. This is a nice place with a nice price in a nice area that's close to everything one needs on a cool trip to New York City.

NEVER DONE A HOSTEL
I have to be honest, I didn't mind the Hostel that much. It was full of vibrant European travelers, and even had a fridge in the lounge. The gentleman that checked me in was very helpful and quite nice any time I had questions. My only and truest complaint is that there wasn't much hot water for showers! When my New York friend saw the place though, he thought it was pretty cool...he has done much more traveling than I have and has seen some bad places. Over all, it was fine, and I would stay there again.

basic, inexpensive, reasonable
My son and I stayed for a night. The room was clean. Two hand towels and one thin blanket on the bed. Not sure if there were more towels or blankets available because I didn'[t need them. I probably would bring my own pillow cases next time and an extra blanket depending on the time of year, after calling to see if more was available. Very basic small room; does not look like pictures on the advertisement, but was still okay. Decent area, nice corner markets in the area with fresh fresh food and plenty of restraunts.

An unpleasant experience
What we all say when we book a hostel is 'All I need is just a place to sleep at night'. This is what I thought as well, but I barely had this at the Candy Hostel. The bed was like sleeping on a blank of wood. Horrible! Also, After tossing up a decision between the a few hostels, I chose Candy in the end, because the features were clear. One in particular was air conditioning. I am a person who gets very heated and breaks a sweat in a hot room, so air conditioning is one of these very basics I need. The hostel lied in their description, because not only was there not air conditioning, there was no air circulation at all! All they had was a window, not ducts or anything. If you wanted to open the window, you had to risk one of the many pigeons that dwell on your window sill coming into your room during the night. I would not have considered this hostel, even if it were half the price, if I knew it didn't have air conditioning. We also had a TV in our room which was great, only thing is, it didn't work. It didn't get any signal, and the front desk kept telling me when I asked 'the ariels are down and the whole block is affected. I found this off seeing as in the common room they had a TV running 24/7. This next point may be more the guests staying, rather than the workers, but it definitely needs a mention. The bathroom was a mess 9 out of 10 times I visited. The toilet was blocked half the time, toilet paper, and one occasion, feces were on the floor. I would wake up the next day (8-9 hours later) and the mess would still be there. I found myself checking the 6 bathrooms on each level to find the cleanest every time. The walls are paper thin, so you can hear everything that is happening around you. One incident in particular (this is not the establishments fault, but a word of warning of the types that stay here) a man almost every day for a week, would come in the hall, scream at people, several occasions shouting at women calling them various obscenities and threatening them at the top of his lungs. I found myself escorting my girlfriend to the bathroom each time, as she was horrified to walk the hallways. The overall feeling of the hostel wasn't pleasant. The carpets felt dirty when walking, the elevator buttons didn't always work (had to press UP when I wanted to go down), it almost all the time had unpleasant smells in the hallway. You may thing my standards are high, but I stayed in a hostel in the heart of Sydney city, for $25, and I had a comfortable bed, air conditioning, and clean bathrooms, which was all I needed for a pleasant stay. I paid almost three times as much, and barely had any of these. I strongly recommend to anyone, cough up the extra money per night and get a cheap hotel, even if it's further away from the heart of NYC (the transport is amazing so it doesn't matter if you're a little further out)

The Candy Hostel is the Worst of the Worst
The very rude reception desk kept me waiting for almost 20 minutes -- clearly, flirting is more important than checking in guests. Then, he wouldn't let me check in, even though my room was paid in advance, and I had my passport and credit card, because I didn't have my ticket and apparently he "needed" proof that I had arrived in NY that day, even though nowhere on hotels.com or the Candy "hotel" website they mentioned such requirement. A fight ensued. Finally he gave up, and "allowed" me to check in, as if he were doing me a favor. The room was bare. A thin mattress with an even thinner cover. No TV in the private room (what it says in the hotels.com description is a lie). The walls are about as thin as the covers, so you hear people coming in and out all night. To add insult to injure, there was no hot water in the bathroom, so I had to take a very cold shower in the morning. I spent only one night night in this pathetic place, and that was too long. Avoid it at all costs.

Very unfriendly staff
There are no air conditioning units in the rooms as stated at hotels. com, atleast not this time of the wear. It probably wouldn´t have beed a problem if it wasn´t for the fact that a warm water pipe ran thorugh the room which radiated so much heat it was probably around 28 degrees in the room. When discussing this with the staff they showed no willingness to help. They were rather unfriendly, didn't come with any clear arguments and did not want to listen. So if you are looking for some friendly staff and some what comfort during your stay, then don´t go to Candy.

bare accomodation
This is bare accommodation. Except the heavy furniture, which is pretty old and worn-down, practically nothing is in the room, probably out of fear that guests would steal or break it. The room was dark, no desk, no chair. Internet was available for an additional fee at $8 per day. Basically it's only a place to sleep. The only reason to stay there would be location.

A crash pad
The underlying state of the hostel is rough: bathroom tiles poorly grouted, bath tub lacking enamel, no chair in the room, etc. But the sheets and towel were clean, if old.

Candy Hostel
Its an inexpensive place for a couple to stay in NYC. We have spent a couple nights there and the place really varies in terms of cleanliness. Sometimes its good, sometimes its not. They have no air circulation, so they leave all the windows open. It was really cold when we were there. During the summer, its not too bad. You get what you pay for.

I would look for another one
The place is old, not well mantained. You have to pay for the wifi. When you want to shower, you need to start looking for empty bathrooms. Also, some dont work. And thats what i can remember from the top of my head. And its not even that cheaper then others hostels.

Candy Hostel in New York - misinterpreted
I read the reviews on Candy Hostel and thought, "Oh no I'll need to lock everything up". Man, was I wrong. I went from March 14-16. The room looked like the picture. Check in is at 3pm but my room was ready at noon so I was able to leave my luggage there to go sight seeing. There are computers that one can use for the internet. $2 for 20 minutes was a good deal for checking things like Facebook and Twitter. Finally, it was a block or two away from the subway which was very convenient. Also, the guy at the front desk was nice and friendly. The beds were decent (NO BEDBUGS). The only down side was it was kind of cold but just bring more sweaters. Also, on my floor there were 2 bathrooms but that just means do everything the first visit. But there was cable and outlets and an elevator. People wrote such bad reviews but it wasn't as bad as people said it was. It's a cheap place so don't expect a 5star hotel. You get what you pay for. I was pleased with my stay and would 100000% stay there again.

Candy hostel - perfect as 'a bed for the night'
Stayed here for a few nights while I explored Manhatten. Was very very much cheaper than staying at a hotel, and did exactly what I wanted - just somewhere safe to go back to, to sleep overnight. It wasnt exactly hotel level living, but thats not what a hostel is all about! Was just as good as hostels I have stayed in around the UK. Overall, did a good job and gave me a safe and warm place to sleep which is exactly what I needed.

Great for the price
I paid $29 a night for my room. In NYC. Amazing. I was in town for just two days and was happy to spend my money on food instead of a place to sleep. The heat worked great. The blanket they give you is thin but you can go downstairs and ask someone at the desk for a thicker one. There are two bathrooms on a floor. They are across the hall from each other and have a lock on the door. There is one shower and toilet in each. It was clean. Remember to bring your soap with you to wash your hands; they don't have a dispenser. Also, I showered at night and that made it easier. In the morning it's a little tougher to find an open bathroom, and you might have to go to another floor to use one. The staff were OK, not over-the-top nice, but not too rude. Again, $29 in NYC.

The front desk staff is not the most welcoming which didn't really bother me that much. But the temperature of the room at night was cold. Also the bathroom wasn't as clean as the first time I stayed here. Usually they provide towel, wash cloth, and bar of soap on top of your bed, But when I arrived to my room I had nothing and had a hard time obtaining them as they were out.
