"Overall I'd give 4.5 stars. Great location if you want to be close to the National Park. I received a free upgrade to the king room on the ground floor, but there was a persistent musty smell, similar to a gym locker. The dehumidifier in the room would not work, despite the instructions to juggle the tank until the light turns off. I suspect this is the cause of the smell. Otherwise the accomodations were fine, bed was not very comfortable but worked after a long day hiking. Check in and check...

"Beautiful view of Hilo Bay. Breathtaking sunrises. Beautiful building, indoor furnishings and exterior. So conveniently located in town, on a hill. Thoughtful amenities: mini-refrigerator stocked with bottled water. Real glasses, mugs and spoon. Privacy. My second time to use this same room in less than 10 years. Suggested improvements: In this particular room, would've liked to know it takes considerable time for the hot water to come on in the shower. A moveable shower head would be nice so...

"This stay was one of the highlights of our trip to the Big Island. Eric & Chris are exceptional hosts who have thought of EVERYTHING. "Frankly the building didn’t look that spiffy from the outside, but was very nice inside. Everything we needed. Loved that it was off grid with solar and rainwater, without feeling like we were skimping at all. Would highly recommend! We also felt it was very reasonably priced. "

"We stayed in the waterfall room and it was fantastic. Secluded, romantic, perfect for a couple get away. The grounds are so beautiful there is no need to visit a botanical garden. A must visit when on the Big Island"

"Beautiful house from the mid-1930’s filled with wonderful artifacts and Hawaiiana. Nice kitchen area for in home cooking - pots pans rice cooker etc- Comfynooks for relaxing- great wrap around deck with lounge chairs and a dining table! The garden is lush and creative. There are many cocqui frogs at night so if that bothers you, there is even ears plugs! Our only negative was that due to a plumbing issue my husband could not soak in the tub (for his degenerative disk) altho the shower worked...

"This rental made such good use of the one-acre lot - we enjoyed the mirthful pool and garden area, the garden, ocean and starlight views from an assortment of decks, lanais and gazebos. We felt like we hardly had to leave the property. But just a few minutes up the road were rocky beaches for whale-viewing, bamboo forests with waterfalls, and a cascading stream with refreshing swimming holes. Cannot wait to return to Honomu House."

"The historic home and setting is absolutely beautiful. We especially appreciated the well equipped kitchen as well as the 4 large bedrooms upstairs each with their own private bathroom and shower. The home is immaculate and the grounds well maintained. An added bonus is the view into the Wailuku Gorge and upstream to one of several waterfalls. "

"Overall it was a good experience for the price. No frills accomodations that are adequate for a good night's sleep. The property has good potential and it appears they are working on improving the overall facility with some remodeling. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. It felt safe and was overall a good resting place for the night."

"All staff were welcoming and helpful. It was nice having a fridge, microwave and sink to be able to eat in at times. Laundry facilities were available. I'd go for a dip in the ocean right next door and then hop into the pool. Very relaxing. Ask for a room, second floor, overlooking the pool as this gives you a nice view of the ocean as well. Very good location in Hilo "
