"What we liked: Spacious room and comfortable bed. Very big window with a nice view of the mountain. Nice variety for the breakfast buffet in the lobby restaurant and very worth the price. The eggplant dish and the fish were some of our favourites. Well located and walkable, 5-minutes from the bus terminal, 7-minutes to the JR train station, 12-minutes to the Matsumoto Castle. We enjoyed our stay. What we think can be improved: The bathroom is functional and spacious but it smelled slightly of humidity, probably because of the bathtub, because for some reason, these Japanese hotels don’t put caulking around the bathtub and the water seeps into the crack around the wall. "

"I can't say enough wonderful things about Nunoya Ryokan. This was our first trip (myself and little brother to celebrate his 30th), so we were new to Japan as a whole. We'd been in Tokyo and Kyoto before heading to Matsumoto. Upon departing Kyoto, we realised that weather was affecting many train lines. In fact, the property owner Michiyo reached out the night before to warn us of possible issues. At the time, our route was clear - but that changed drastically as our travel day included snow and fallen bamboo that cancelled lines. We ended up spending 12 hours train-hopping until finally reaching the city, with our ryokan a short 10-minute jaunt from the station. I'd called Michiyo to warn her of the possibility of us being stranded in Nakatsugawa and she was so apologetic even with things out of her control. As we got there late in the evening, we met her the following morning and she was extremely sweet and welcoming. The ryokan itself was one of the most comfortable stays we had on our entire trip, with an insanely spacious room and lovely bathroom! We took advantage of their tasty daily breakfast offerings and enjoyed complimentary coffee in the cozy lounge. This ryokan is in a great location with plenty to do around the property - though we did choose to take a nice 55-minute walk to a WONDERFUL tattoo-friendly onsen for some down time. Please do yourself a favor and choose Nunoya Ryokan for a traditional stay with some amazing ladies - and definitely get the breakfast!"

"loved it so much we actually booked same brand of hotel in the next town we visited. the onsen was so lovely, and open overnight which allowed me to relax while my partner took some calls (late night in Japan but working in business hrs US time zone). free washing machines were so nice. other treats (free coffee, tea, probiotic drinks, ice cream pops) added bonus. walkable from train station and the attractions we wanted to visit "

"We spent two nights at this hotel in a Japanese style room. We found the room comfortable and spacious. I very much enjoyed the public bath in the hotel and visited AM and PM for a relaxing soak. The hotel is a quirky mix of modern and traditional and we appreciated this.We had a wonderful breakfast buffet each morning in the hotel restaurant and the staff was always gelpful and kind. We found everything very walkable to this hotel. The station, castle, art museum, shopping, restaurants and coffee/tea/sweets are not far. We would definitely stay here again and we really loved the vibe of Motsumoto!"

"This is out of town, but I’m a sucker for traditional onsen ryokan. This place has aged well, rooms are spacious, there is a private onsen on the top floor for 40min usage, and there are a couple of great restaurants 10mins walking distance around. Lawson out the front. Staff were excellent. Only stayed 1 night but would go back. Great if you have a car."

"A beautiful room with lovely room wear and a daily cleaning service. I loved the onsen and was lucky that it was available each time I went down. I think it would make it more accessible if there was a sign on the door for women to share, men to share, or occupied for family / private. "

"Wonderful hotel. I will definitely come back. The bed is excellent, soft like clouds! I did not want to leave my bed in the morning. Breakfast selection is decent too. In your hotel room, there is very detailed muti-page recommendation of places and food to try. It is written in both japanese and english. The location is about 5mins from Matsumoto castle. Check if the castle does light up at night during your stay."
