"Super unique experience off the beaten path to stay in a beautiful Ryokan. Would be great for a value with larger families, but be prepared to understand the busses or get a taxi, not a ton to do in the immediate area. On the other hand, staff was nice, limited but plenty of English with my terrible Japanese. Food was excellent and beautifully plated. Rooms were truly amazing, one of my favorite things on my travels."

"Staff went far beyond what we expected. Every single person was always accommodating and helpful. The room was magnificent. In hindsight I think a regular tub would have been enough. The huge ceramic outside tub was beautiful, but being from California and drought conditions I felt guilty filling up the huge tub every night. "The Toshiharu Ryokan was a great way to start our trip in Kyoto! It was a fun way to experience a traditional Japanese house and the staff was excellent. The bath was super relaxing and the Japanese traditional breakfast was delicious. "

"A great Ryokan in the city! Bonus: a renovated Onsen! Rooms were traditional and clean. Not your western experience as there are no beds or in-room shower, but we slept like a baby! Staff super friendly. Highly recommended!"

"Very traditional Japanese ryokan. Vast majority of guests are Japanese and so is authentic but also a bit weird… that’s to say, it doesn’t cater to foreigners. Can’t decide if the decor is stuck in the 1980s or if this is just Japanese taste. We had one of the fancy rooms with a private lounge and a private bath tub (could fit 2 small people) overlooking the mountain and lake. This was lovely. Public baths were on 3rd floor, but we didn’t use those. Stayed for 2 days, so ate 2 elaborate...
