Gavea Tropical Boutique Hotel

3.5 star property
8.2 out of 10, Very Good, (105)
"The hotel is up the hill away from the madness of the beach and downtown areas, but still a 15 minute walk to the heart of Gavea and a 15 minute cab ride (download Uber or app called "99" before you go!) to Ipanema and Leblon. Everyone at the hotel is friendly and helpful. The breakfast each morning is superb, especially when the monkeys come and join you. The pool is small but the hot tub is great (you have to ask them to heat it up 40 minutes in advance, though, and they shut it down...

"Lovely old building, with lots of character. Admittedly the condition is slightly dated, but is part of the charm! Marianne was very helpful, explaining the local area and arranging a taxi for us. Bedroom very spacious and the pool area overlooking the city is brilliant! Santa Teresa is a cool neighbourhood too. Would recommend. "

Casa Mosquito

4.5 star property
9.0 out of 10, Wonderful, (16)
"A week ago we were reading online reviews, trying to figure out where to stay in massive Rio. It was a 3 night trip before traveling on, and we wanted an escape, proximity to the main sights, a beach, and uncover a gem. Jackpot in Casa Mosquito. The owner Benjamin greeted us on arrival, some good juice and a welcome chill out after an 11.5 hour flight from London. The lounge was such a great vibe after the travel. Great sleep, great morning view on the balcony (bested by the rooftop pool and...

"I purchased travel insurance because there was a huge chance for issues. Sure enough the airline canceled the flight within 24 hours of booking and the property kept saying cancel is possible but we had to do other steps. We followed the steps and more steps elsewhere were given to the point we were sent to a dead end."
