"The hosts were very nice, greeted us when we arrived, even though we arrived very late. They had some milk in the fridge for our morning tea and coffee which was very thoughtfull. After that first greeting we really didnt see much of them. Which was also very thoughtfull, we were in our little vacation world. They wer also very quick to respond to all communication. The cottage itself was very clean and very well kept. It had everything we needed. The directions for internet, trash removal, and transprotaion areound the area were all very clear and helpful. There were three of us. I stayed on the futon sofa and the other two had the bedroom. It was a very comfortable stay. "

"Our stay at the Ratham Guest House was wonderful! The home was outfitted with everything we needed for our 21-day stay. We were warmly welcomed by Irene and Ewan who were kind and gracious hosts. Ewan gave us great pointers on where to go and what to see during our stay. The kitchen is nicely appointed which we appreciated because we did a great deal of cooking. Another bonus was the washer and dryer which allowed us to minimize our packing for the journey. The home is lovely, very clean, roomy, and pleasant on all accounts. The 4 bathrooms were great and would definitely make for an easy stay for a larger group. The town of Dalkeith has many nice places to grab a meal or tea. (Lavender Coffee & Crumbs quickly became our favorite spot to go for tea and a snack. The Turkish breakfast was delicious!)Morrison’s grocery is only a 5-minute walk from the house. There is bus service to anywhere we wanted to go with stops just steps from the house. (Note: Although the house is on a busy street, we heard very little traffic noise from inside the home.)Overall, our stay was everything we’d hoped for; a lovely home, well equipped kitchen, with friendly and helpful hosts on site. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it highly. "

"We had the absolute pleasure of celebrating our first Christmas together at the stunning and charming Dower House. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that Harriet is an exceptional host—she went above and beyond by thoughtfully providing beautiful Christmas decorations that made the house feel even more magical.The house itself is incredibly spacious—we're pretty sure we didn’t even explore every room! The two stoves were a lifesaver for our family of enthusiastic cooks, allowing us to prepare our holiday feasts with ease. The dining room was simply perfect, both in size and decor, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for all of us to gather.One of the best things about the Dower House was being able to make all the noise and laughter we wanted without worrying about neighbors—a rare treat! The expansive garden was an absolute highlight, giving us the space to play traditional games and create lasting memories.The abundance of bathrooms was another fantastic feature, making everything so much easier for a large group like ours. It’s safe to say the Dower House has stolen a piece of our hearts.Thank you, Harriet and Michael, for going above and beyond to host us so beautifully. This was a Christmas we’ll cherish forever!"
