"It was very quiet when i stayed in December, well out of season. But the staff were friendly and helpful, and breakfast was excellent. As it was so quiet, the bar wasnt open but there are good pubs a few steps away. I would stay here again quite happily. "

"Old established pub on the outskirts of Barnard Castle, within a 15 min walk of it's shopping area. Decorated to a good standard, room was bigger than average, with all the usual facilities in working order. However the bed was very soft & its mattress in need of replacement. Food the usual pub menu & of a reasonable standard. A good cooked breakfast was within the room tariff, making it a good value stay."

"Lovely hotel. Will say before all else - the food was amazing! Breakfast was brilliant but we also ate in the restaurant the night of and this was delicious. Would drive 1.5hours to come back again! Otherwise the hotel seems to be a little hidden gem. Staff very welcoming to us (and 2 under twos - always a challenge). Very accommodating, great communication and friendly. "Stayed before the hotel was renovated. Now everything is lovely and tastefully decorated. Very calm amd relaxing. Food and service excellent. Room 8 was a little small but perfect for a 1 night stay, ensuite immaculate. Would recommend staying and doing the low force to high force walk on the opposite side of the river."

Location suited us - not too far from Durham city centre, but particularly convenient for our visits to Beamish and Tanfield Railway. Room was clean and well-appointed. Food was amazing! Superb breakfast with good choice. Dinner menu was unbelievable (not available on Sunday evening. Highly recommended."

"We stayed at the property 2 years ago and found it really nice. This time, I think we had a different room . Still nice but unfortunately we could not get the electric shower to function and when I intended to report this there appeared to be nobody around . Still a nice venue in a pleasant setting.
