"I want to start off by saying I had a nice visit, I did the half board option and the food was plentiful and very tasty. Lots of variety, the sushi was not good and their take on Western food isn't great but the Japanese food is awesome. 2 different Onsen areas that alternate gender daily so you can try both. "The walk to the hotel from the Kusatsu bus station is not a mere 8-10mins or so, esp with luggage in tow and that it’s a bit steep to get to this hotel. Definitely not for older folks!! Didnt like that we also couldnt prearrange for taxi service ahead of time on our way back to Tokyo as we did not want to catch the bus again. "We were picked up from the train and immediately got a ride to the monkey park, a major reason for our visit. The hotel then sent a shuttle to pick us up and return us to the hotel where our luggage had already been taken to the room. This was a more traditional place with shoe removal and slippers provided. "A great base to visit the snow monkeys. A beautiful and traditional onsen. The breakfast and dinner was served by older ladies that did not necessarily speak English but definitely kept trying to make it an amazing experience each time. The variety of the served food was just overwhelming. So delicious and always something freshly cooked right at your table. "The rooms had a classic "Showa era" style, which gave them a great atmosphere, and were quite spacious for two people. The onsen was on the small side but clean and nice, with a pretty outdoor area. There was a lounge area with free drinks, nuts, and dried fruit. It was a decent value. I'd stay there again."

"The hospitality (service and meals) at Shiganoyu Hotel were amazing. While we did not speak Japanese and the staff did not speak English, they used a translation tool for conversation and didn't let that be a barrier. "Loved our stay at Shibu Onsen Kokuya and would highly recommend. They made the trip into the mountains and to see the snow monkeys very easy - with transfers included and bag drop to the station. The traditional dinner and breakfast were a great experience. Also loved the variety of onsen’s available within the hotel itself - and private Onsen with your room if you want! "

"Upon arriving at the hotel, I realized I left my belt bag which contained everything important (credit cards, driver license, passport, literally all the money I brought). There was a female staff with a fringe who was so kind and patient. She helped me track down the train we were on and followed up with the train staff when it had reached its final destination. This was around 12 pm since we wanted to drop off luggage. We got back to the hotel to check in on the status of my bag and she informed us it was at a city 1 hr away by Shinkansen. She looked up the departure/arrival times for roundtrip and we were able to get it same day. When we were in our room dropping off our luggage first, a male staff who was also looped in called and said they'll bring up a note to show anyone at the station directing where our bag was. Less than a minute later, that same man was at our door OUT OF BREATH. I was so shocked because he came up insanely fast. That's amazing service!!! We also wanted to ship 1 of our 2 large luggages to our hotel in Tokyo. They were able to take care of that and the cost was extremely reasonable. The room itself was large compared to other Japanese hotels I've stayed in. Everything was in working order and there was ample bathroom counter space which I love. Clean as well. Location cannot be beat. Right next to Nagano Station/direct access to the station, and right by the bus stop too. Very near a Donki and many eateries. Highly recommend. "
