Claflin University, located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, was founded in 1869 by Alonzo Webster (1818-1887), a Vermont minister. Webster came to South Carolina to teach at the Baker Bible Institute in Charleston training African American ministers for the Methodist Episcopal Church (today the United Methodist Church). In 1869 he received a charter from the state of South Carolina to establish a college that would prepare freed slaves for the responsibilities of citizenship. The first charter banned discrimination among the faculty, staff and students, making the Academy the first South Carolina university open to all regardless of race. Nonetheless, all of the students at the Academy were African American.

"Sweet Marion is a great house located right on a private channel off Lake Marion. Very secluded and quiet setting with dock access right in the back yard. The home was very well setup with 3 King sized beds and another bunk bed and two additional singles. Plenty of sleeping access for a large family. Home is also outfitted with games and all the kitchen items you may need. Thanks for a great home for our family Christmas vacation! Highly recommend this home. "

"The entire property is outdated and not as good as the pictures in the listing make it appear. But the biggest issue is that when we arrived on Friday, multiple smoke detectors were beeping-needing new batteries. I immediately called the number provided and was told that she would pass the issue on to the “local team”. We went out for the night and when we returned after midnight, nothing had been fixed-so we had to take the batteries out of every one in order to to stop the beeping so we could...

"Overall, we absolutely loved the home. Quiet neighborhood. Very clean and spacious to accommodate large families. Only issue we had was the lack of swing set in the backyard as seen in the photos. We chose the house partially on the swing set for our young children. We would definitely rent this home again in the future! Highly recommended."

"Loved this place! It has so much room! There was 33 of us in total, between two properties. We were so glad we could invite everyone to our house for two dinners. We Enjoyed the lake and the spacious home! Everything we needed for our meal prep was already there, we just had to bring the food! We fished, boated, paddle boarded and swam! One tip: bring an extra roll or two of toilet paper if you have as many ppl as we did. Also check-in was simple!"

Our vacation compound is the perfect setting for enjoying the outdoors and making memories.

"My family, who lives in 3 different states, got together for the holidays. There was 8 adults and 4 dogs. The space was awesome and the layout was perfect. We could be together in 1 room or separate and do smaller groups. We would definitely go back!"
