Staying in the Sassi, the old cave houses, is something you really should do to enjoy the full experience. I stayed at San Giorgio Hotel, and it was exactly what I hoped for. It was a special experience, something I will always remember. I really recommend it to anyone who wants to try this kind of stay. The staff were very friendly, the atmosphere felt real and traditional, and the room was big and comfortable. Everything made me feel like I was living a dream."

"We loved our spa cave room at Thymus. It had a pool and a Turkish steam bath. The room accommodated four easily and was very clean and well appointed. The staff was wonderful and the breakfast was excellent. We would stay again and highly recommend to anyone. Matera is a unique place and this is a one of a kind, top tier property. "

"This property is just AMAZING! It is set in the old town, part of the Sasi. The hotel is in what was a Palace back in the 1700’s. The room we stayed in was literally a cave that had been updated and converted to a hotel room. The pictures on their site do a wonderful job showing what the rooms are like. The restaurant was excellent. Service, food, and variety. The breakfast spread was very complete and offers eggs and omelette as well which we did not find in other hotels in Apulgia. But the best part of the stay was the staff. The were so helpful. They arranged for parking outside of the old town and for the shuttle from the parking to the hotel. They also had the staff porter the bags to the hotel from the shuttle. They had many suggestions of where to go what to do and were helpful in just so many ways. Highly recommend staying there and spend a few days in Matera. The history there is very unique and interesting and the hiking and scenery are pretty darn special"
