"I almost hesitate to give this a five-star review, because I don’t want the secret to get out – this is the best place to stay in Houghton! Our son is a student at MTU, so we are in the area numerous times a year. We have stayed at various other properties (both Airbnb’s and other hotels), but Independence Stay has become our go-to spot. "Beautiful view of the lake in winter! Perfect location to Nordic ski and skijor at Tech Trails and Swedetown. The internet service was unusually strong for the UP. We were able to stream multiple devices at the same time. Great communication with the owner, including during a blizzard. We were warm and had power. Thank you for the wonderful memories. "

"The cabin was cute, very outdoorsy but really cool. We tried to count all the bears in the cabin, we never could come up with an actual count. We looked all around in our adventure to the north for a bear to add and could not find one. Really nice place. The traffic was a bit much the first night but we got used to it.
