Playa Ocotal is a small community located in the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, a 45 minute drive from Liberia International Airport (LIR). Most visitors fly in to Liberia Airport, although some families prefer to fly to San Jose and drive up the coast (about 4 hours).
Playa Ocotal is a quiet, natural beach. It is a soft black sand beach safe for swimming. Monkeys are common, both at the beach itself and in the environs. Birds and other wild animals are also easily found in Ocotal. The beach is about a kilometer long, with beautiful tidal pools created by the volcanic formations at each end (perfect for fishing, snorkeling, and exploring). Because the beach is located on a cove, the waves here are small families with children find that reassuring. There is a lot of shade. It is one of the cleanest beaches in the area.
The house is about 5 minutes walking distance from the beach on a quiet paved road. There is a good bar/restaurant located right on the beach.
Ocotal is a small community home to a number of expats and hotels offering scuba diving and deep sea fishing. The community is composed mainly of retired foreigners and tourists. There are few hotels and bread and breakfasts in the community, but most of the homes are privately owned. The area is very green and natural, as it is surrounded by trees and forests.
This house is a great starting point to explore this part of Costa Rica. The nearest town, Playas del Coco, is short 3 kilometers away. Playas de Coco is a small but lively town with restaurants, bars, supermarkets, souvenir shops, drugstores and banks. Local activities include snorkeling, diving, hiking, biking, deep sea fishing, and zip line tours. Coco is the main town in this particular part of Guanacaste and a hub for tourism.
We are located in the heart of the Guanacaste coast, and there are many other beaches within driving distance. The famous surfing beach of Tamarindo is an hour south, as are Playa Flamingo, Avellana, and Conchal. Close to Tamarindo is an enormous white sand beach called Playa Grande, which doubles as a protected national park where leatherback turtles nest. To our north, are the beaches of Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama (15 minutes). Further north, about an hour away, is the Peninsula de Papagayo, home to remote and relatively undiscovered beaches. All of these beaches have their own character and are worth exploring.
Also within driving distance are a number of national parks, including Parque Nacional Santa Rosa and Parque Nacional Rincon de la Vieja.
