The Space:
Sacred Ground by Tiny Away, on the outskirts of rural Ōkato, is a tiny house retreat just 40 minutes from New Plymouth city. Enjoy breathtaking vistas of Mount Taranaki and the Pouakai Ranges, with cows often grazing in the foreground. This private spot offers easy access to nearby attractions. The lush Pukekura Park is a 40 minutes drive away, Pukeiti Gardens, the the Egmont National Park is 55 minute drive away, and the Dawson Falls is over an hours drive away. You can also meet exotic creatures at Pouakai Zoo and dive headfirst into the wild heart of New Zealand.
A comfortable, 190-square-foot accommodation is set in one of the best tiny house rentals and serene locations with abundant natural bushland, easy access to water, split air conditioning, a kitchenette, cooking equipment, and excellent bathroom facilities.
The bathroom, however, follows ecologically sustainable principles, including an eco-friendly cassette toilet with a removable waste holding tank, hand basin, and shower (gas heated for hot showers). It focuses on satisfying people's needs with natural resources and processes to save water by using eco-friendly toilets to save the environment.

Guest Access:
Guests can access the tiny house and surrounding areas. You are welcome to the space around where the tiny home is placed.
The property has a Geodome where we usually host yoga, workshops and retreats on occasion. If you would like to check out the Geodome while you are here or use it to do yoga or relax, just send us a message and you are welcome to use that space as well.

Here, a pristine coastline with world-class surf breaks meets the perfect volcanic scenery of Mount Taranaki. Our local recommendations:
- Pukekura Park is an inner-city botanical gem that features lakes with rowboats, playgrounds, a cricket ground, a fernery, a tea house, a waterfall, and the Bowl of Brooklands entertainment venue.
- Pukeiti is a 360-hectare rainforest park at Taranaki Maunga's base. It offers rainforest walking tracks through regenerating forests and stunning views of the Tasman Sea and nearby ranges.
- Egmont National Park is home to the 120,000-year-old Taranaki Maunga, New Zealand's most perfectly formed volcano, which last erupted in 1775. It's a sacred site for the Māori and a popular climbing destination.
- Dawson Falls is a 30-minute scenic drive from Stratford and offers great short walks on Mount Taranaki. The forest, with its moss-covered Tōtara and Kamahi trees, resembles a mystical Goblin Forest.
- Pouakai Zoo has been a Taranaki tradition for nearly four decades and invites visitors to share experiences with new generations. Memorable moments, like feeding geese and exploring the native bush, make it a cherished local heritage.
Getting Around:
By car:
- From New Plymouth, it's a 34 mins drive to the nearest town of Okato (34km)
- It is reachable by both 2WD and 4WD.
By public transportation :
- You can get here by train or bus.
- You might be able to order a taxi here, but Uber is challenging and usually not available.
Other Things to Note:
- Wifi is available
- Pets not allowed
- No BBQ Grill available
- Smoking is not allowed on the property
- No unregistered guests or visitors are allowed
- Mobile reception has good signals for all telco lines
- Don’t forget to close the windows and lock doors when leaving the tiny house/ property
- Make sure to turn off the lights, air conditioning, and electronics (e.g., especially chargers)
- We would like to advise guests that longer stays or later check-outs will incur an additional charge
Important note:
- Keep in mind that outdoor fire pits are not available during a total fire ban
- Due to the nature of the property, abundant wildlife may be present in the surrounding areas
- For stays of 5 nights or more, an additional cleaning fee will be collected to help maintain the [compost/cassette] toilets and ensure a clean and fresh experience for all guests. We appreciate your understanding.
