A quick 10-15 minutes will get you to world-class hiking, rock climbing, mountain swimming in glacial lakes and scenic drives along the Shawanagunk Ridge, including Minnewaska State Park, the Mohonk Preserve, Mohonk Mountain House, Sam's Point & more. The Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale is an exciting and unique trip a few minutes away into the past when it was a major source of cement for the building of many famous NYC landmarks. Visitors today explore its remains and it holds occasional events such as concerts and art installations.
The house is also about a 10 minute walk to the Wildlife sanctuary on Huguenot Street, where herons, swans, muskrats, hawks and bluebirds abound. World-class birding can also be found in nearby Wallkill, where the Shawanagunk Grasslands NWR hosts hundreds of species, including migrating owls. Majestic hawks soar over this lovely area and deer, fox, rabbits, and even bears are prevalent in the woods.
