Nagataki was better than a hotel stay. We stayed for one night before walking the Nakasendo. We had our own little Japanese cottage set in a lovely garden. Meals were served in our cottage and were simply amazing. The food presentation was a work of art and absolutely delicious and inventive. The onsen was beautiful and had a gorgeous view out to the garden. The staff were so lovely even though not a great deal of English was spoken. We were picked up and dropped off at Nakatsagawa station. Would definitely return.
Nagataki is a compound of several "hundreds of years old" typical houses connected through walkable paths and integrated with nature. You can truly feel the "old" and "nature" vibe all across the property.
The houses being old can get really cold during the winter even with the heaters turned on, so be prepared with warm layers and pajamas so you can have a pleasant night.
You get your own private restroom and bathroom with a soaking tub along with all the amenities you might need.
You can also use the public bath (separate women from men), which was a delight and the walk across the property was really invigorating.
You also get yukatas you can wear on your room and around the property that makes the experience even better.
When you book half board (which I highly encourage you do), you get breakfast and dinner (kaiseki style) served directly on your 'old house / room', and the food is 5 star Michelin grade, honestly the best food we ever had in all our 3 weeks in japan!!! You have to try it!!!
And they cook using local ingredients <3
The service was incredible, Masaya was very attentive to our needs and gave us really good advice for the Nakasendo Trail and how to move around the towns and back.
They also offer a shuttle service from and to the Nakatsugawa station (I suggest you contact them prior to arrival to schedule the pick up, otherwise there are plenty of taxis outside the station at a very reasonable price so either way works).
Highly recommend this Ryokan!
It's a delightful establishment where the staff is dedicated to ensuring our half-board stay is a truly satisfying experience. However, it's worth noting that the accommodations are modest, akin to a 2-star rating, so it's important to keep that in mind.
Ryokan posizionato in uno splendido giardino con personale molto gentile ed efficiente . Cena e colazioni in stile giapponese davvero ottimi . Gli unici problemi rilevati sono i futon estremamente bassi e , visto il periodo freddo , parecchi ingressi esterni di aria . Ultima annotazione il prezzo che mi sembra un po’ elevato
This 200 year old ryokan is such a treat! It felt like luxurious camping because you have your own cabin and you are connected with nature all around, while having the amenities of a hotel. Food was on par with a Michelin 3-star restaurant. The host Mr. Yoshida was an artistic and incredible chef and you will be amazed by his skills. The place also provided us with pickup and drop-off at the station and the castle ruin walk, as well as dropping us off for our Magome-Tsumago hike. This place was the highlight of our trip and we could not have stayed at anywhere else. Highly recommended for those visiting Kiso valley to experience authentic Japanese culture at a ryokan.
Original home stay experience. The hut is original and very old - so on one hand to have an original experience on the others hand the rooms have to be refreshed (especially the toilet and onsen) for the price you pay.
You have an on room WC but no shower and you use the public bath (onsen) which is also nice but again very old.
I think I ryokan experience in Japan is a must it’s always expensive and I’m sure that for the same price nice and fresher rooms are available. But Nagataki is worth the visit and stay for it superb service and extraordinary food you get. Dinner was one of the best meal we had in Japan and breakfast which was also traditional was surprisingly delicious too.
We don’t eat meat and seafood and still the chef (who is also the sons owner) adapted the meal accordingly without a problem.
If you want to experience a real traditional, romantic and delicious home stay - that’s your place.
Masaya was extremely helpful and accommodating. The food was superb and beautifully presented. The hotel picked us up, and took us to & from Nakatsugawa station. A pity the weather wasn't as helpful - we caught typhoon Hagibis and it rained for 2 of our 3 days!
100% recomendable!
Highly authentic property. Staff are highly enthusiastic in their duties, making the service a phenomenal one.

Excellent stay in Nakatsugawa
Wonderful! The host and staff made us feel at home. Dinner and breakfast were the very talented host's creations and drew on seasonal, local, products: a first class experience. The villa and public bath is charming. We would definitely like to come again.
