Our holiday homes NZ getaway, just north of Kuaotunu Village, sits by a creek flowing through native bush. Here, the stars shine brighter, the air is fresher, and the thing on your to-do list is to unwind.
The Space:
Kūaotunu Cabin 1 by Tiny Away sits in the coastal township of Kūaotunu, just 10 minutes from the beach settlement of Matarangi. Surrounded by native bush and a flowing creek, this tiny home offers an offbeat getaway, where you can spend time exploring Opito Bay or soaking at The Lost Spring in Whitianga, all within a short drive.
Afterward, unwind with a pizza from Luke’s Kitchen or simply relax by the creek as birdsong fills the air.
A comfortable 139-square-foot tiny home with easy access to water, split air conditioning, a kitchenette, cooking equipment, and excellent bathroom facilities. These amenities include an eco-friendly cassette toilet with a removable waste holding tank, hand basin, and shower (gas heated for hot showers).

Locals and visitors alike enjoy simple pleasures like fresh food at Luke’s Kitchen and scenic drives along Black Jack Road. It's a place to slow down, take in the coastal beauty, and connect with the surrounding native bush and birdlife.

- Luke’s Kitchen is a must-visit spot offering wood-fired pizzas, fresh seafood, and delicious local fare. With live music and a strong community vibe, it’s a place where both locals and visitors come together to enjoy great food, drinks, and laid-back vibes.
- Opito Bay has a white-sand beach perfect for swimming, fishing, and snorkeling. This peaceful bay is known for its clear waters and incredible marine life. It’s surrounded by scenic farmland and historic Māori pā sites.
- The Coromandel starkly contrasts city life, with its native rainforests, rugged mountains, and over 400 kilometers of pristine white sand beaches. This natural haven is ideal for hiking, with trails like the Karangahake Gorge and Pinnacles offering breathtaking views.
- The Lost Spring Whitianga allows you to soak in geothermal mineral pools while enjoying the sounds of nature, with cocktails and dining delivered right to your poolside. Pamper yourself with a massage or other rejuvenating treatments at the on-site Day Spa.
- Waiau Falls leads to a grove of majestic kauri trees. The trail includes a suspension bridge and rewards visitors with views of the cascading falls.
Festive Events:
- One Love Festival 2025: Join Aotearoa's ultimate reggae festival on January 25-26, 2025, at Tauranga Domain. The lineup features 46 acts, including international and iconic artists such as Maoli, Rebel Souljahz, Katchafire, and more. The festival will feature two stages—the main stage and an Aotearoa stage celebrating Kiwi music.
Getting Around:
By Car:
- Kūaotunu is about a 2.5-hour drive from Auckland, and a 2WD vehicle is sufficient for the journey.
By Public Transport:
- There are no public transport options available.
By Flight:
- The closest airport is Whitianga Aerodrome, about a 30-minute drive from Kūaotunu. Flights from Auckland to Whitianga take approximately 30 minutes, and car rentals are available at the airport for the rest of the journey.
Other Things to Note:
- Wifi is not available
- Gas BBQ Grill is available
- No unregistered guests or visitors are allowed
- Mobile reception has weak signals for all telco lines
- No smoking inside the tiny home; only in designated areas
- Please expect limited connectivity as the tiny house is set in a rural locality
- Don’t forget to close the windows and lock doors when leaving the tiny house/ property
- Make sure to turn off the lights, air conditioning, and electronics (e.g., especially chargers)
- We would like to advise guests that longer stays or later check-outs will incur an additional charge

- Due to the nature of the property, abundant wildlife may be present in the surrounding areas
- In order to maintain the cleanliness and functionality of our cassette toilets a minimum additional cleaning fee is applied for stays of 5 nights or more. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a hygienic experience during your stay.
