"A very unique one night only experience. The property is immaculate. The dinner was a wonderful tasting of many things I had never tried, all very good and filling. Breakfast was not as good. The hotel staff was very accommodating and kind. The morning prayer was peaceful and beautiful. The only complaint is the sleeping mats are paper thin and extremely uncomfortable, even after placing one on top of the other with all the blankets it was nearly unbearable. Neith my wife nor I got more than two hours of sleep. It's too bad, because we have slept in other Ryokan style places that were traditional but not painful. For this reason I would advise asking in advance for something better to sleep on."

"Ryokan Asahikan is a beautiful traditional Japanese Inn established in the 1880’s and it is a wonderful, unique experience for those looking for a peaceful environment off the beaten track and away from the bustling cities. Asahikan is nestled in stunning mountain scenery, with beautiful wood paneling and a courtyard garden inside which seems to have been formed over time with loving care. There are several activities in the area, such as nearby caves and hikes to explore. The owners are very friendly and we had traditional Japanese meals prepared at the Ryokan, which consisted of local or home-made foods and were delicious and beautifully presented. This stay at Asahikan was so memorable and was the best part of our first visit to Japan. We intend to return again!"

"We got to stay here for the night of news years eve and enjoyed a vegetarian dinner. My husband cannot eat any wheat or gluten so the monks made sure he had a special vegetable dish with no soy sauce. The rooms were at first cold but with the heaters warmed up nicely. The hot baths were nice. We enjoyed walking the town and seeing the various shrines and temples and large cemetery too. The huge cypress trees were amazing. And the cemetery was lit at night too. We walked around in the evening and heard the huge bells rung 108 times for the new year. It was snowing and very magical. The town people have out free sake and hot tea to visitors for the New Year’s Eve ceremony. We awoke early and joined the monks for early prayers. We slept on futons (very comfortable) and the bathrooms were very clean. "

"This will have to be my most favorite part of my trip to Japan. You will have to intentionally come here for the temple stay. First and foremost, the facility will ONLY ACCEPT CASH payment for the stay. Though my wife and I were not too fond of the shared wash rooms to wash up. I don’t believe the facility has rooms with private wash rooms. The staff was exceptionally nice and helpful. They offer traditional breakfast and dinner(vegan friendly, though I am not, very delicious!). Wake up early(6AM I believe) for the prayer and breakfast after. The town does close early with no convenience store to buy snacks if you’re hungry. "

"Excellent Ryokan that has been well maintained and cared for given its long history. The old facility is evident and yet despite that, provided a cosy stay. The host was extremely warm and welcoming and showed the hospitality as one would expect from a traditional Ryokan passed down from decades old. The kaiseki meal at additional cost were delicious and well worth it. Frankly not much around the area and as the host put it best: come, relax and enjoy what the moment has to offer without the hustle and bustle. Fun fact: the hotel has the only elevator in the whole area. "

"The hotel is well located near the main road, so pretty accessible if you arive by car. The train station is also not far. The facility is well maintained, room condition good, and the staff friendly. Highly recommended."
