Nothing really impressed us. The utensils were substandard so many things were not available, frig, freezer because the freezer didn't work. There was no acholol was not allowed, we only have one drink for dinner, Owner and family lived above us and because of the wooden floor we heard every footstep and it was very annoying when we wanted quiet time or to sleep. Parking was supposedly off site, which we only found out about when we checked in, my wife was on crutches so not suitable at all. The washing machine in our area we couldnt use as the owners had their washing in, Some for a couple days before removed so a health hazard, All tourist information was out of date. He wanted us to check in at 5.30pm, every other holiday place we have stayed in has been 2pm. When we were allowed in he then made the bed and did some basic cleaning, There were trip hazards outside our door and we had to move them, large blocks etc

Night on the steepest street
We had no idea when we booked that we were going to be in a special stop. The room was fine, although we could not get it quite warm enough for our comfort. We thought there was a washer/dryer, coffee, etc, but there was not. Be sure to read all the description before you book.

When I arrived to the property to stay, the only thing I found good was the cleanliness. The gentleman that ran it was not very appropriate other than show where things were to use if wanted, but the idea of explaining to me the rules & regulations of the place & while staying was not very encouraging for me to stay with them again, the area near where we stayed was untidy, dirty and having no actual view from where I stayed I felt the he over-soled it, I ended up not staying the two nights I paid for, I only stayed the one night & looked for another place and decided to cut my loss with the retreat.....I definitely will not ever go there again

Worst possible stay
He is a very poor communicator. When we got there he was in the building but did not come out to talk to us. We had to talk to him on mobile. The accommodation is misrepresented on the website. There was no mention of the lack of parking. The rooms were filthy, dust on the surfaces and it stank of cigarette smoke. It was that bad that we arranged other accommodation and the gready guy refused to refund us any money. We are still happier that we did not stay here. Buyer beware

No parking on site, have to walk have way up a fairly steep st to get to house. Room is off a main entrance which is accessible by owners and another guest. You can lock your room when your in it but if you leave you can’t lock your door!!! Noise from owners above very noticeable especially young children and baby. No shoes inside and no alcohol .

This property is very basic regarding its facilities. The towels are nearly threadbare. I found that I had to buy some items that were not supplied. Like Soap, flannels. there was no milk inn the fridge, when I first arrived. Theironing boatd had no soft surface and their was no iron, although one was meant to be delivered but did not materialize. A plus was that I was able to park my rental car on site.

Situated on the steepest residential street in the world, this place is great for cheap accommodation. However, it does feel like you're staying in someone's spare room. While everything was clean, I wouldn't call the place a retreat. You may fight to find parking too, as there is no off-street parking available, so you can look forward to walking up or down the hill to the car.

The place was very untidy and had stuff lying everywhere around the section. The owner was VERY uncooperative and evasive when trying to find out about the property prior to arriving, and we had to contact him only by text as he wouldn't answer his phone The fact that on site parking is not available is not mentioned anywhere in the advertising and it is definitely more than 4 properties away from being able to park. We could not find the key as we were unsure which was the main door as there was stuff lying everywhere, which made it very unclear what was accommodation and private dwelling. We would not recommend this property to anyone, regardless of price

If you're a light sleeper, this place is not for you. You can hear the footsteps & children shouting from upstairs. In the website it wasn't indicated that you can't cook in the premises, and during our check in, cooking is not allowed. They only provide a microwave for heating your food. I included parking during my search but you can't park in the premises. You can park at the bottom of the hill. You also have to bring your own rubbish as per email. It wasnt tidy outside. There are heaps of clutters. The photos on the website look tidy but not when you go there. Although the place is right next to the steepest street which is good.

i had to contact the owner to get given the instructions how to access the place. replied whilst on the way driving to the Dunedin. when we arrived first of all trying to know is this the place or Not!!! with rubbish piled against the side of the house, a not so easy to follow instructions as to where the key box/ lock was to found> then all sliding doors to the lower part of this house had curtains drawn together. all you could see where sports shoes between the curtains and door. dirty glass and very unwelcoming entrance. the other door with sign this is private. knocking on the glass door which could only be the one to enter through to be sure it wasn't someone else room. no answer so we took the key and it fitted the lock. Opening the door and pulling back the curtain..OMG the room that appears on the Expedia website as a communal room where you can eat breakfast , a couch with television was not as it appeared. now with a random empty cake display fridge standing on the floor, table pushed towards the door about a metre away from entrance, a random huge pine lobby desk with a mannequin torso standing next to it, a old three wheeler bike, random plastic bags filled with god knows what the TV now near the bedroom door. Bed pillows standing on the pine desk bongo drum, a female torso mannequin a book shelf filled with random paraphernalia and stickers and cards displaying 8.2 score from Bookings.com. THE room Named C no lock no key to lock the room. decided to leave

I wasn’t able to check in till 6:30, sheets ripped and old , place dusty in need of a thorough clean and vacuum. Shared space under maintenance so it was unpleasant. Door unable to be locked from the outside to leave things safe in room. Positive was room was on special for $50 - wouldn’t have been worth paying any more than that price . And the steepest street is fantastic

Do Not Book. Simple As That.
This venue is not at all as it appears in the Hotels.com listing. The property does not have parking available and is situated at the very top of what is claimed to be the steepest residential street in the world. Incomplete information was provided by the property manager ahead of my arrival as to where to find the keys and the self check-in process (which is offered for guests arriving after 3PM). The patio was covered in cardboard boxes full of junk that quite literally formed a blockade to the check-in/access point. The interior reflected the exterior with more boxes of junk, and a hoarder’s environment on display in the ‘lounge/lobby’ area. The ice box has not been cleaned out since we last referred to refrigerators as ice boxes. The room had crumbs everywhere, and the bed sheets had not properly been cleaned. I had booked two nights here and spent only one of them after feeling exhausted by a long drive from Christchurch that day. I woke up in the morning and completed another booking for one night at another Dunedin hotel, just to get away from this property and to salvage my visit to Dunedin.
