"Central location in a major tourist centre with historical significance for the city, the hostel is close to most attractions. Rooms that face the street also hear the life of the city all night. My twin room was clean, spacious and light. The kitchen is a good social place though has inadequate facilities for the number of people who may actually want to cook/eat in - fridge space, cooking pans, etc. Showers are excellent. Wooden floors very creaky. Staff are warm, welcoming and helpful."

"It’s an old building but it was clean, staff were very friendly, everything was good, except that there’s no air conditioning and the fan was very noisy, another aspect is the beds are very hard, if they could change that, it would be great. Breakfast was excellent. "

"The staff is absolutely exceptional. Very kind, polite, helpful and the nicest people. The location is pretty good too - about a 15-20min walk to old Funchal. The walk back could be longer due to the uphill but nothing too crazy. Parking can be tricky but I never had an issue parking at the lot that was designated for the buildings but not for the hotel. "Great location, and a spacious room. I do recommend for anyone looking to stay by the old part of Funchal or close to the water. The pedestrian road is lined with lots of cafes and options for great food. Delicious! Only drawback is that there is no staff and we had to rely on a whats App chat to coordinate our checkin. Thankfully my phone (canadian) worked on arrival in Lisbon and then Madeira and we recieved our checkin code. Like all hotels in Madeira a tourist tax is charged but needed...

"This was our third stay here at Quintinha São João. It really feels like the most wonderful home away from home rather than a hotel. You're made to feel so welcome and looked after by the most dedicated and friendly staff. I can't imagine anywhere else in Funchal coming even close to this place. And it's all mostly because of the staff too. They can't do enough for you. Everyone from the reception staff to the serving staff to the cleaners and the spa staff made us once again feel so welcomed...

"Hotel was in a good neighborhood that had shopping and restaurants nearby. Hotel is connected to the neighboring restaurant, where breakfast was provided which had limited options of only hard toasted bread and cereal, sugary diluted orange juice, hot milk and coffee. Due to the neighboring restaurant and good location of hotel, the room did get loud at night; we needed to put on a noice maker due to the constant noice of cars and yelling/screaming people.
