A beautiful piece of hillside heaven
Amazing! Highest house on the hill as far as we could tell :). Outdoor shower and kitchen were so nice in weather, a perfect place to relax and soak in the beach. Would give 6 stars if I could!

What a view!
Even after going to all the beautiful beaches and on some engaging nature hikes, our favorite part of the day was returning to the Emerald Abode. There we would enjoy watching the sunset from the privacy of the pool. As a matter of fact during the four weeks that we spent at the Abode, we only missed three sunsets from the pool deck. Of course our experience was enhanced by the ever gracious and informative April. Her thoughtful assistance was greatly appreciated and very useful. David & Teri

Great Tropical Oasis
My husband and I were on our honeymoon. We picked April's place because of the beautiful view, the privacy, and safety. Any questions we had April was always there to help us out. She gave us lots of great suggestions for snorkeling. We checked in pretty late because of our flight time and traffic, but April was very accommodating. She had the fridge stoked with fresh fruit, eggs, bread to get us started for the first full day. She even left us a bottle of champagne, which was so very sweet of her. My husband and I enjoyed that on our first official night. Great time all around!

The perfect getaway! We were in awe for 10 days!
The Emerald Abode was everything we imagined and more. April provided everything we needed to make our stay perfect. We felt like we were in our own private little paradise. The plunge pool sunsets were the icing on the cake. We often found it hard to drag ourselves away from the Abode to the many adventures awaiting us in and around Santa Teresa. The beaches were breathtaking. The food was amazing when we chose to eat out and the people were lovely. We will forever treasure our memories of this truly special place. Pura Vida

Beautiful!!!
The Emerald Abode is an amazing way to explore Santa Teresa. It is located above the town with incredible views of the ocean. It is just far enough to get away from it all and close enough to easily experience the ocean, beach, and restaurants. The private pool is a perfect way to cool off in the afternoon. The host was incredibly responsive and was more than willing to accommodate our needs. Waking up to the ocean, exotic birds, and having coffee watching the howler monkeys may have been our favorite part! I really can't put into words how much we enjoyed our stay. We can't wait to go back!

Everything about April and Emerald Abode was extraordinary and memorable!
From the moment we arrived, April made us feel special and well-taken care of. She thought of everything, including stocking the fridge with essentials, and offering insider tips on rum liqueur for amazing pina coladas! Her fount of knowledge about the area was so helpful- she has truly created a paradise for 2 in Emerald Abode. We tore ourselves away to ride horses, sail, hike and explore... but every evening we ended up in the plunge pool overlooking the pacific and looking up at the stars! An added attraction for us was as much doggie company as we wanted- loving, gentle and highly entertaining! If you’re thinking about going to CR, come here! You’ll thank us later...:)

The Emerald Abode was a Perfect Stay
My husband and I stayed right after Christmas at the Emerald Abode. This was our first time in Santa Teresa and we loved every minute of it. The house was everything we wanted... Great view of the ocean, amazing sunsets, private pool, and and a kitchen to cook in. We are so happy that we were off the main road, since this was the height of the season and it was nice to be able to escape the crowds each night. The house was simply designed but had small elegant touches that really added to its appeal. If I had to nickpick one detail, is to remove the armoire's door so that the other person in bed can watch a movie at night (but really this a minor minor complaint, cause we were there is spend most of our time out doors). April was a great host, and she was there anytime we had a question but also a great person to have a conversation with. She hooked up us with Torsten, a private chef to come cook for us one night, and it was a meal we won't forget. If you need tours, restaurant recommendations, she is know everything about the area. Peaceful retreat from life
We were so blessed to have 6 nights at Emerald Abode! The picture of the woman in the pool is what drew us there and it was definitely the highlight of our stay. It was so peaceful and beautiful we could have stayed right there all day! The pool has jets in it, no chlorine as it is run on a filter system and heated by the sun. It was the perfect temperature all the time. Laying on the loungers and looking at the star filled sky at night was awesome! We enjoyed the 'open air' feeling of the abode. April was very helpful in any way we asked- a WONDERFUL host! She gave us a rep to call for a car rental and advised on a 4 wheel drive, which we now know is definitely necessary. She set up a horseback ride for us on the beach that was a lifetime dream and was beyond my expectations! Don't miss this! Sleeping at night with the ocean air and sounds of the waves was amazing as well as the sunsets! We are so glad we did not overbook ourselves and had lots of time to just relax and found a few very secluded beaches with shade too. Enjoy!

Awesome VRBO!
The property is very private and secluded, yet minutes away from local beaches, surf shops, stores, and restaurants. Some of the best sport fishing in the world is located south of Santa Teresa in the small port town of Malpais. We booked a half-day charter and caught Mahi Mahi, Roosterfish, and Tuna. The Emerald Abode is a fantastic property. Clean, and quiet, with spectacular views of the ocean and sunsets. The plunge pool is perfect for cooling off in the late afternoons and early evenings. We fell asleep every night to the sound of the ocean waves crashing on the beach. The property is very secure, with a robust, locking automatic gate. Be sure to rent a small to mid-size 4-wheel drive when visiting Santa Teresa. We rented a larger Toyota Landcruiser and it is much too large for driving in this area. The roads are mostly unpaved, with lots of pedestrians, quads, motorcycles, cars, and trucks of all sizes. April is a fantastic VRBO manager. She is attentive, professional, and full of local knowledge of the area. Her advice regarding places to visit and local cuisine never steered us wrong! When we return to Costa Rica, we will definitely be back to the Emerald Abode! Doug and Gayna

Your Dream Vacation Awaits Elsewhere
I do not recommend this property unless you like being dirty and sleeping and eating with a plethora bugs. I would describe this as open-air. There are only two walls with no openings to the outside. If you don't want to be swarmed with bugs, go elsewhere. The screens on the bedroom do not keep out bugs even if religiously closed. There were bugs in the bed at night, and dead bugs between my boyfriend and I in the sheets in the morning. The bathroom is also open air. I did not sit on the toilet seat due to bugs. As for the kitchen, you cannot cook without bugs galore and enjoy wiping the counter of bugs in the morning with the one dish towel you get. I had to leave. I am not one for camping. We stayed at three other places in Costa Rica during this trip, including another in Santa Teresa, and we did not have the same issue with bugs. Please know you will get one set of towels to last you a week. Normally okay, but it is hot and buggy. Also, the jacuzzi was discolored. Not knowing what it was, I would not sit in there. Most disturbing was how the owner was unprofessional. When we talked the day of our arrival, she told me she was not doing okay. Not what you want to hear when you are on your way to have a carefree, fun vacation. She also lives on the property and will yell up to you--so much for privacy. Additionally, when I told her about the bugs, she claimed she saw no evidence of bugs (small and black and could not be photographed against the dark wood) the next afternoon and asked me the "REAL reason I left". I have received no resolution from her or HomeAway. There are some great places in Santa Teresa that are clean with great views, privacy, and wonderful people. Your dream vacation awaits you elsewhere.

No better Honeymoon destination!!!
Honeymoon or just a vacation, the Emerald Abode was the PERFECT place to stay! And let me tell you why... -April was incredibly helpful before we even booked. She answered all my questions about getting there from the airport, about the town, car rental accomodations, etc...anything and everything that would help me make my decision to book here. Once we booked, she was still very helpful in answering all of my nit-picky detailed questions, I felt very prepared for our trip. She helped in arranging our taxi from the Tambor airfield to Santa Teresa, and even had the taxi driver prepared to drop us by the ATV rental to pick that up and we followed him with our luggage up to the rental property. -The house is beautiful! Open air, great views from every room in the house, and super secluded. April's house is just down the hill, but you still have tons of privacy. I particularly loved the open-air shower, super refreshing! -Santa Teresa is such a fun little town! Tourist-y enough that you can get around without knowing much (or any) Spanish, but still authentic enough that you actually get the feeling of travelling outside the country. You aren't just in an American-ized city in another country. -It might have been the time of year we went (I think it was the beginning of the "rainy season"...even though the week we were there the weather was PERFECT, only rained/stormed at night), but most of the beaches were so quiet and unoccupied. A few times, my husband and I were the only ones on the beach! -The ocean water was the perfect temperature! Never too cold, even in the evening, and still refreshing in the heat of the day! -Snorkeling at the volcanic rocks was super fun -Day trip to Tortuga Island was awesome, they have snorkeling gear for you, but once they drop you off at the beach for the afternoon they won't let you take the gear with you (So bring April's with you if you want to snorkel more around the beach!). The travel guides were very professional, fun, and helpful. And the lunch they provided was delicious! -Hiking the waterfalls at Montezuma is a MUST -- sitting under the waterfall was my husband and I's #1 favorite memory of the trip. Hike up to the 2nd and 3rd and swing on the rope swing and jump off the cliffs! -Surf Lessons at Kina Surf Shop -- YES! -Get coffee from The Roastery, Gary is awesome & has fun suggestions, and the coffee is delicious! -Eat at Caracolas and Habaneros, our 2 favs and sunset views on the beach during dinner!

Every detail is carefully thought of!
This is truly the most amazing hidden gem in all of Santa Teresa. My Husband and I spent 5 nights at Emerald Abode in March of 2016. I have rented houses all over the world and this by far was one of the very bests. From the beginning April, the owner, was wonderful to do business with, she was prompt, gave ample information, and was extremely helpful with all of my questions and requests. April arranged a car to pick us up from our prior destination. When we arrived at her rental it was more beautiful than we even expected. There was a wonderful welcome basket full of everything we could imagine. April was very welcoming, kind, and gave a very detailed tour of the property. There are very professional, discreet, yet helpful notes placed around the home to help remind you of the small details. PLEASE NOTE… this is not a first world country, you have to be mindful of your water practices and your waste. There are critters and surprise guests if you are not diligent with your practices, with that said, this is all over this part of Costa Rica, not just April’s rules, and if being mindful of your practices during your vacation is not something you are willing to do, then maybe Santa Teresa is not the right destination for your travel. For those of you wanting a nature filled adventure, you will not be disappointed! We rented an ATV through a company April recommended for a very nice price. It was the perfect means of travel throughout the city. We used this to go all over the peninsula to find the best surfing spots for the day. We went grocery shopping twice during our stay at a local grocery store. We would wake up and cook breakfast at the house, not only was it the best view in the city, but also helps with your budget and you have a fridge to store lovers. The house is very comfortable; we used the hammocks for daily naps and would watch the sunset from the privacy of our own pool. April has thought of everything a traveler could need, from an ice chest and beach mats to different types of pillows to fit each guest’s individual needs. She even includes recipes in her welcome book to encourage you to use the kitchen, even has pre-frozen mangos to kick-start your margarita! I cannot say enough wonderful things about April and her property. If an oversized couch and a big screen TV is on your must have list, this is not the place for you. If a quiet, private, little piece of nature is what you are looking for, then you found it!

If you answer yes to any of the questions below, quit wasting your time and book this property now! 1. Are you looking for a one of a kind property? 2. Do you enjoy breathtaking views? 3. Do you appreciate thoughtful design? 4. Are you wanting to stay at a property where the owner has thought of everything? 5. Do you want to show up to a property that has a refrigerator that is stocked with fresh local fruit and some ice cold beers? 6. Would you like to feel like the property owner has your best intentions in mind and makes better recommendations than any guide book or website? 7. Do you want to wake up in the morning, step out of a very comfortable bed and have delightful Costa Rican coffee while watching the sunrise and hearing the sounds of howler monkeys in harmony with the sound of waves breaking? 8. Have you ever wanted to take a shower where the water falls out of a bamboo showerhead while you look out over the pacific ocean? 9. Do you enjoy lounging in a refreshing private swimming pool drinking pina coladas and watching the sunset over a blue ocean dotted with surfers? 10. Do you appreciate privacy? Take a second here and just close your eyes and imagine what it would feel like to stay at the greatest vacation rental you’ve ever stayed at in your life. The house is great, the location is great, everything about this property is great, but it wouldn’t be so great without April, the owner of this stunning property. April is what really made this vacation so special and without her guidance and hospitality it just wouldn’t have been the same. One of my favorite parts of this property were the two dogs Akun and Nicoya. If you’re like me, vacations can be tough when you are away from your pets at home. These two dogs are the most loving and loyal dogs I’ve ever met abroad and my fiancé and I really just loved having them around on the property to see us off as we went exploring and welcome us home every day. If there was any downside to staying at the Emerald Abode, it is that now we will be comparing all of our other vacations to this one and I doubt they will stack up. Please do yourself a favor and book this property. I promise you won’t regret it.

The facility and the host April was wonderful. April was very attentive. My only issue was the road to the property. It is very steep and 4x4 or quad required. Walked it twice bringing in supplies and then rented an ATV. This had no bearing on our stay or enjoyment of our stay.

As good as it gets
I almost never write online reviews, but this experience was special. Our host, April, was so helpful with information and making various arrangements for us. Her attention to detail shows throughout the property. It was exactly the tropical getaway we were hoping for. If you're the type of traveler who prefers the "Four Seasons"-type of resorts, complete with valet parking and luxury shopping then Santa Teresa might not be for you. OTOH if you enjoy seclusion amongst a lush tropical canopy with breathtaking ocean views and lots of wildlife, look no further. You can do a "surf check" from the comfort of your bed, or kitchen, or bathroom, or private pool, or the deck-mounted hammock. A well stocked kitchen made "meal prep with a view" a favorite activity. The local restaurant offerings were A+ in quality, far exceeding our expectations. Definitely try the local Soda's too. Santa Teresa has amazingly consistent surfable waves. If you prefer calm water for snorkeling or SUPing, it's an easy drive to Mal Pais, Cabuya or Montezuma. Thank you April! We will definitely stay here when we return to Costa Rica.

An amazing place!
This property is exceptional! This is not only the place itself (very well appointed, comfortable, great pool, fantastic view, close to the beach… a little oasis!) but also the owner. April, she Thrives at providing the best experience for the people renting from her. She organized a quad rental for us ( better than a car there), a taxi to Tambor airport ( the best way to get back to San Jose). We had a wonderful experience!

April's eco-friendly special place up on the hill offers spectacular sights and sounds of the ocean, and the birds, and the breezes, and the howler monkeys, and the trees, and in the distance the sound of the buzzing town below. April is a gracious and instructive guide. She took mighty good care of us, we strange, annoying non-What's app using paper people! The house is perfect for two. Showering off the sunscreen and chemicals to sit in the pool was especially perfect when the crested blue jays came to visit. We relaxed and enjoyed the private paradise. I hope that we come back again. The road up to the hill on the 4 wheeler (which we had never driven before) made every trip down and back up an adventure. We lived to tell and were very grateful to April for all of the arrangements that she made for us. Sometimes you meet unique and special people that you know your will remember for ever: April is in that pantheon. Many abundant thanks for sharing your treasure, Mia & Brian

Amazing property
Aprils place is absolutely incredible. This was the most adventurous place to visit. We ventured all over the area and is was a dream. 100% will be back to Emerald Abode.
