Casa Mariposa - Jungle Oasis, Close to the Beach!

Casa Mariposa is charming rustic Caribbean style houses surrounded by lush vegetation & abundant wildlife, yet only 200 yards from beautiful Cocles Beach. It is the best of both worlds, in the heart of the jungle & so close to the sea. Your very own tropical paradise at an affordable price!

Casa Colibri and Casa Mariposa are in the tiny village of Cocles on the Southern Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. The nearest town that you will find in most guidebooks is Puerto Viejo de Talamanca which is about 2 miles north.

Within 10 miles of the houses there are more than 6 incredible beaches (the closest, Playa Cocles, a lazy 4 minute walk from the houses), two national parks with hiking trails, world class surfing, snorkeling along a very active coral reef about 25 feet from the water line on Punta Uva beach and in Manzanillo. Guests are invited to spend the day at the Noa Beach Club, enjoy lunch and beverage service on the beach. Sign up for zipline canopy tours, indigenous reserve walks, visit botanical and butterfly gardens, tour the jaguar reserve and sloth rescue center, take yoga classes and go kayaking - most of which you can do on your own or with a guide or group. Or, just swing in a hammock on the terrace, where you’ll spot toucans, sloths, butterflies, howler monkeys, aguati & hummingbirds!

The region offers really fantastic food. A few of our local favorites are El Refugio Grill, GypSea, Cafe Rico, Tiare, Stasha con Fusion, Chili Rojo, Bread & Chocolate Cafe & Bamboocha. Some of the finest dining in the area can be found in Cocles, a short 5 minute walk from Casa Colibri and Casa Mariposa at La Pecora Nera. Also highly recommended for cocktails is Le Cameleon. There are a few well stocked grocery stores nearby and several wonderful cafes & don't miss the farmers' market in Puerto Viejo on Saturday.

Can be rented with our other cottage, Casa Colibri to sleep a total of 7 guests!

Misrepresented listing
I have come to Costa Rica many times, including Puerto Viejo and I paid to stay in this house for 36 days with my son, and left after 6. I am aware of the bugs and environment there. The listing clearly states "fully screened in windows and doors" and this is NOT accurate. There are large unscreened gaps under the windows, between the windows, between the roof and the screens, between the floor and the walls and holes in some screens. This allows many types of bugs and critters to enter, which is exactly what happened. There were two wasp nests on the porch and the wasps kept entering (one of us is allergic), the owner said "bug spray is available" but I requested she come over to spray them, they kept coming back. We had many cockroaches in the bathroom and kitchen and one fell in my hair! A large grasshopper in the shower, a large spider in the bathroom and twice a lizard fell on me while I was in bed sleeping. On top of all the bugs, the first night we arrived, was a massive rain storm which then leaked over our bed and into the kitchen, the owner did eradicate the leaks the following day but the home was so humid our sheets never dried and I was only offered clean sheets when I requested them. As far as the beach being a 2 min walk, that is also not accurate. The beach is about a 10 min walk down a long dirt road. The owner refused to refund me when I informed her we were leaving early due to our safety and the amount of bugs. Don't stay here unless you plan on camping.

Pura Vida!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Mariposa. Sharon is a wonderful host - she prepared us early with tips for restaurants and area activities. She was very responsive, communicating and responding quickly and thoughtfully. The house is perfect. We especially enjoyed the hammock! It was well appointed to make meals, relax, etc. We used the bikes and appreciated the beach towels. Definitely reserving again!

Nice little casa in a great jungle setting
We enjoyed our month at Casa Mariposa. Sharon is a great host who is always available to answer questions and take care of any problems that crop up. The property included two bikes, beach chairs, and even boogie boards. We love staying in these traditional wood houses. But this one is special because unlike many rentals in Costa Rica it has a modern plumbing system with filtered water and a central hot water system that works, as well as a modern bathroom and nicely equipped kitchen. The Wi-Fi worked well enough to stream video, which is a big upgrade from our past experiences in Puerto Viejo. The casa is centrally located a short bike ride from two large grocery stores, as well as Cocles beach and Playa Chiquita. All in all, a great place to spend time in Puerto Viejo.

An amazing month away
We had the privilege of spending a month in Cocles at the property. It was so hard to leave at the end of our stay. The place had everything we needed (well-appointed kitchen, mosquito nets, outdoor shower, etc.). The host lives next door and responded to our needs immediately. She also provided lots of suggestions about local activities and restaurants. Perhaps the best advice she gave was that the Noa Beach Club (a short walk from the house) allows outside visitors the use of the pools, restaurant, beach furniture, etc. It was an amazing life saver when the kids were tired of salt water or if the waves got too big. We will definitely be back.

Howler Monkey Chorus Delight
The property is very cute and we loved the “glamping” aspect: I don’t camp but having the screened in windows open to the jungle noises at night was great, especially hearing the howler monkeys! Sometimes the power goes out for a while but we contacted the property manager who sorted it out. One caution: it is a good 4.5 hour drive from San Jose and would be very difficult to find at night, so plan to leave early to get there in the daytime.
