"Our stop at Maquenque was one of our favorites. We didn’t realize we’d have to take a boat across the river (with a bunch of luggage and baby stroller in the rain) to get to the lodging, but staff was quick to help do all the heavy lifting and it was not a biggie. We enjoyed the boat tour and the dining. The included breakfast was great. Unfortunately, the lodges don’t have a/c. The amazing nature we were able to see made up for it! "

"This place is an underappreciated gem. It lies on the banks of the Rio San Carlos with 24 individual cabins. The rooms are very spacious and nicely appointed. While the pictures show the cabins overlooking the river only around four or five of them actually do that. I spent three nights here in August, 2018. The property lies only 11 kilometers from the border with Nicaragua. This area is remote and very hot and humid and the cabins are not air conditioned but have a ceiling fan and a powerful...

"The house and grounds are beautiful. Pictures don’t do it justice. It’s gorgeous looking over the lake. Pool was fantastic. Bedrooms and bathrooms are great. Check in easy and there was even a welcome basket with fruit. Would stay again. The only thing people need to know is that it is 45 min to La Fortuna even though it looks closer on the map. This didn’t bother us but if you are expecting to just pop in and out of town you need to plan accordingly from a time perspective."

A magic place at the bottom of the Arenal volcano
"Amazing hotel next to the rain forest. Wild animals walk around the hotel, you can hear the monkeys in the forest, it's a fascinating place. At the bottom of the Vulcano the views of the mountain are magic. Great pools, including a hot one for those rainy days. Wonderful breakfast. Didn't try the main restaurant as it was too expensive. But quick <5 min drive into town for meals solves that."
