The White Wall, Berwick upon Tweed This steep wall, viewed from the south side of the river, is known as the White Wall; with its dramatic 'Breakneck Stairs', it rises from the Tweed to Berwick Castle, in its time a prized possesssion for both English and Scottish rulers. In the foreground are just three of Berwick's famous herd of mute swans, whose numbers reach around 400 at their peak in August.
