Convenient No-Frill Hotel
First the negatives: The hotel and the rooms are old; it is easy to see the age and wears-and-tears. My room had no extra power outlet, so one had to substitute some appliances (humidifier/fan) or be creative.
Though the hotel has posted notices asking quests to be quiet, one can easily hear footsteps and noises from upstairs.
The "included breakfast" was a coupon for one of McDonald's 4 breakfast sets, and there are 2 McD's about 5-10 minutes walking from the hotel. The coupon can only be used between 6 and 10AM.
Now the good points: This hotel may be the one closest to the train station; it is just one block from Yilan Train Station. Yilan is not very big, and from the hotel I could walk across town in about 1/2 hour, so the location was convenient for me. The room is huge and spacious, as shown in the hotel's photos. Replaceable items like bed sheet and towels are fresh and very clean.
A couple notes for Western guests: When I checked in the room, there was no blanket on the bed (it was stored in the closet). At first I thought that was unusual, but I guess in the summer time one may want to sleep with nothing on the bed. The other thing is that there is now shower curtain, which again may not be unusual in Taiwanese bathrooms. Bathroom floors are expected to be wet and slippers are provided outside the bathroom.
