The alcoves are deliciously cool even on hot days because they have high ceilings opened to the north winds. I think this particular alcove (aivan) was one for one of the important ladies of the harem.

"We stayed two nights. Positives: Good location and five minute walk from the outer walls of the old town. Supermarket a minute away on the main road. Water pressure was good although on our first morning they turned the water off for 30minutes and only put back on at second time of asking. "Nice enough place, just inside the walls of Khiva and not far from the East Gate. Lovely breakfast, friendly and helpful hosts. I did find the bed harder than I like (I've got back problems), wifi was patchy (So far I've been in 3 hotels in Uzbekistan, and they have all been patchy). But for the price, and the location and the super friendly hosts, worth a try if your on a tight budget. "
