Best 4 best things about this property:

1. The house has the old-world island charm of the Maine of the 1950s.
2. The house is located in a quiet wooded setting perfect for families.
3. The house includes 2.6 acres of woodland leading down to the ocean.
4. There are many trails and activities in the area.

Unmatched in old-world elegance and simplicity, this 4 bedroom shingle style home lords over private oceanfront from its lichen covered stone foundation. Truly rare offering for the mid-coast with many alluring amenities including a sleeping porch, a screened eating porch, curved windows, woven shingle corners, massive sliding pocket doors and countless other historic elements as well. The property includes 2.6 wooded acres. The house has two full bathrooms, 4 bedrooms, a sleeping porch, an eat in porch and a game/TV room that can be used as a fifth bedroom. For chilly nights there is a wood stove in the main room . There is also a public ramp and dock on the Back River (perfect for kayaking) approximately 1 mile away. The house was built in 1913 as a guest lodge for Doggett Castle and much of the old-world charm of the house remains.

The property is just a short ride to Booth Bay Harbor, Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, Popham Beach State Park, Robinhood, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Oven's Mouth preserve, Bath and many more of Maines popular attractions and some of Maines best Lobster restaurants. There are also many hiking and biking trails in the area.

Please be aware that the house sits on top of hill requiring climbing a long staircase (see picture) and it is not handicap accessible. Also the kitchen is typical of a 1950s kitchen (no dishwasher and the appliances are not stainless steel, ok the gas stove is stainless steel, sorry about that).

Doggett Doggy Days
Our group, and our pooch Junie B, had a wonderful two weeks! The house was spacious which was appreciated as a few people in our party had to work for part of the trip. Either the sleeping porch or TV rooms make great offices by the way. We loved the peek-a-boo view of the Sheepscot River although we only made the attempt to go down to the waterside once due to its steep and rocky nature. We were warned! Other aspects we loved: the fire pit and chairs, the well stocked kitchen and bathrooms, the screened porch for epic card games, the ceiling fans for those few warm days and nights, pretty artwork on the walls (tempted - but no, we didn't take any home), the rustic and comfortable charm of the house, and the responsiveness of both the owner and property manager (Heather is the best) to any problems and questions. There were thoughtful touches throughout such as jars filled with dog treats and lollipops to greet us as we walked in. You can tell that this is a well-loved home, and we thank you for allowing us to share the peace and tranquility of Westport Island. It was a magical two weeks!

Maine Island Getaway
We at times had up to 4 adults and 4 children. There was plenty of room and the house was very comfortable. The hardest thing to get used to was the quiet. Occasionally we heard Lobster boats going by but the silence was amazing!!! Al was great at communicating. We had everything we needed. Wi-Fi and connectivity worked well, I actually worked a few hours a day from Westport Island. 5 Island Lobster was great. Daphne’s pies on Main rd were amazing. We will be back. Harry

Charming guest lodge on the river
Our family of five (20 yrs old +) enjoyed our quiet week at the Doggett Castle Guest house. Plenty of spots to read and lounge. Loved the fire pit, and the ample screened-in porch. My dog & I enjoyed our daily walks to the property's ledge overlooking the water. The house is on a picturesque river (not oceanfront) where you can spot lobster boats in the morning. We were looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of many Maine resort towns, but Westport Island was probably the opposite extreme. Narrow pebbly roads make biking difficult if not impossible. Enjoyed the suggested excursions to other small towns nearby. Host was helpful, & caretaker was attentive.

Great stay, limited access to water from property
We had a great stay. The house was as advertised - A quiet neighborhood, off the beaten path. We loved the screened porches and the room to spread out. We would have liked more direct water access (a dock) but Al was upfront about the site and offered information on where we could drop kayaks in close by. A great place for a quiet visit.

Beautiful spot on Westport
Our family enjoyed Al's home and had a great vacation. Historic property on acres of pine forest leading up to the water. The porches were perfect for reading and dining, we grilled, saw lots of wildlife, and took day-trips to Reid State, Bar Harbor area, etc.

Family Reunion
Exactly as described. Perfect setting for reuniting with family members after 2019. Rustic but very clean, plenty of room for casual games and meals, and great location for exploring the Maine coast. Extras provided by host (i.e. coffee pods and garbage bags) were thoughtful and appreciated. Great memories. Thank you!

Charming ThrowBack to Classic Maine - Awesome
We so enjoyed our time at this property which was a step back to a slower time with beautiful views of the lake, time to build bonfires, ample room for everyone to work and good enough WiFi to zoom. Great location near many adorable towns including Bath, Wiscasset, Belfast, Camden, Rockland and Rockport. Portland is on the way so easy to visit on the way to and from the property.

Magical Maine
We fell in love with the house at first sight and loved it more every day of our two weeks there. Westport Island is a wonderful way to experience Mid-coast Maine--close enough to everything there is to see and do, and far enough to give a guest a real taste of the awe-inspiring natural beauty of this coast. The house is comfortable and charming. And our hosts were gracious and warm. We can't wait to come back.

A Slice of Heaven
We loved this house and the location was great. We hadn't been to this area before but thought it was very central for many of the places we wanted to go. The owner and property manager couldn't be more helpful and nice. The house feels like a well appointed fishing lodge, with tons of screened windows looking out on the river and woods, comfy furniture and a big sleeping porch on the 2nd floor.. We hope to go back next year. One caveat is that there are a lot of stairs so you have to be comfortable with climbing up and down a bit...

Getting Away From It All Island Home on Quiet Westport Island.
We had a wonderful week on Westport Island in this historical and fabulous home sitting atop the rugged and wild landscape of coastal maine overlooking the Sheepscott River. We were 2 families including 3 adults, 4 kids (9yo-15yo) and a dog and all lived comfortable together while having our own space. The house was great for gathering, eating together in the screened in porch, games at night in the living room and enjoying the quiet and secluded areas around the house. We loved sitting outside in the chairs perched on the rocks overlooking the river and sitting around a campfire at night in the back yard. Loved picking wild blueberrys and rasberries on the property and climbing down and around the rugged untouched land to get to the river and boathouse. I rented cayak and paddleboards from the Wiscassett Trading Post (5 miles away) and they delivered and picked them up for a small fee. Spent each morning on the river exploring the rocky coast. One thing to know is that therei s no public access point on the island so we just paddled around the river near the Doggett Castle Boat House. The boat house and dock are shared with others in the association although when I was there, we met only one other person. One day 3 of us took a canoe upriver and got picked up at the public dock in Wiscassett (6mile paddle). This house is for people who love quiet, being surrounded by natural rugged beauty and really want to get away and enjoy the company of your traveling mates and the wonders of nature. We did take an afternoon trip to Boothbay which was really nice. Also ate great lobster and fried seafood at Reds Eats in Wiscassett (voted best lobster roll in Maine). Otherwise, we ate at the house. Kitchen is very basic but was stocked with essentials. Bring your own food. There is a Shaws on Rt 1 about 6 miles from the house. There are two celing fans (porch and living room ) which were great. Otherwise, each room has a fan which are needed on hot summer days. There are some games and puzzles but we did bring our own. The house has a very nice selection of movins on DVD. Also the wireless was great. One of our party had to work remotely and did so with no problem. Finally, you have to climb a set of about 17 stairs at both entrances so just be aware incase someone in your party would be challenged by this. Would return to this property without hesitation. Also, my dog who is very athletic LOVED IT! Thanks Al.

Peaceful & scenic stay
We loved our time on Westport island! The house is very close to a shared dock (steep but very short walk) where we were able to kayak and dip. The house is gracious and the surroundings are peaceful and beautiful. Nearby highlights were the coastal Maine botanical gardens, Popham beach, Red’s Eats, and Plants fish market.

Mopsick/Bael Stay at 20 Castle Lane
We had a generally positive experience during our week-long stay at 20 Castle Lane. The instruction booklet we found upon first entering the house was well-written and helpful. This is a quaint old house ("cute" was my 12-year-old daughter's favorite adjective) with everything we needed---a fully-stocked kitchen, comfortable mattresses with plenty of linens and blankets, abundant towels and soaps in the bathrooms, modern appliances including a new fridge and washer/dryer. The toaster oven nicely filled in for the main oven (electric) which is out of commission. I will say, though, that it works better as an oven than as a toaster. (Smoke from burnt toast triggered the kitchen smoke alarm more than once.) A dedicated bread toaster would be a welcome addition. The only light in the kitchen is a single flush-mount, which doesn't adequately illuminate the room. I kept wishing for track lighting to train on the food prep areas. The microwave and outdoor gas grill were fine. Adirondack chairs in the spacious yard made it a pleasure to sit outdoors and read, practice my guitar, or just listen to the wind rustling through the trees. The wood-burning stove was great to have on cool summer nights. Only once did the lights go out (on the porch) , but we had easy access to the circuit breakers under the house where we quickly resolved the problem. We even found a beach chair there which we used on our two trips to the beautiful Popham Beach State Park, the highlight of our stay. Food shopping at Shaw's, a 6-mile drive, is convenient, and, the store is well-stocked. Day trips to the Freeport outlet stores, Booth Bay Harbor, and Southport Beach were easy and fun for the kids. The sole negative experience we had was when Nancy and I were chased from the floating dock by a fellow who peppered us with COVID questions. The matter was skillfully handled by local caretaker Heather who assured us, after contacting the person who runs the dock association, that the fellow was out of line, and, that we, indeed, had rights to the dock. Heather was very responsive to our text messages. She was especially helpful on that late, rainy night when we first arrived and had some trouble finding the house, staying on the phone with us until we safely made it in. (Hint: on your GPS/Google maps, put in 20 Marshall Lane instead of the Castle address.)
