Osprey Heights Accommodation is a wonderful place to stay at the very beautiful Vivonne Bay, an unspoilt fishing village with its history going back to the mid 1800's. There is a queen bedroom and a double bedroom which look out over native trees to the river, and another smaller bedroom with a double/single bunk bed. There is a fully equipped kitchen, and all linen etc is provided. The accommodation overlooks the Harriet River and at the bottom of the driveway is a cute timber jetty where you can watch the sunset over a crisp chardonay or launch a canoe and paddle off to the beach or upstream to tranquil waters with bird life in abundance. The house is surrounded by coastal vegetation and the reserve at the rear has a meandering path that will lead you to the magnificent Vivonne Bay Beach - voted the Best Beach in Australia in 2003. It hasn't changed, the locals have kept Vivonne Bay to themselves; it's very laid-back and pristine as ever. Central to the core attractions on Kangaroo island, Vivonne Bay is probably one of the most strategic places to stay on Kangaroo Island.
Wildlife Galore right at your door
The rugged South Coast provides many opportunities to interact with wildlife either on conducted tours or driving and walking on your own. Tamar Wallabies, Long-Nosed Bandicoot, Koalas and Echidna, the elusive Platypus, Australian Sea Lion and New Zealand Fur Seals, even the very occasional Leopard Seal - watch out they can be mean! Fairy or Little Penguins are as close as the jetty and they make for a great nights viewing, after which you can throw a squid jig off the jetty and land yourself some calamari: serve salt & pepper style - fresh and delicious. There are lonely beaches that provide myriad shells and remnants of sea creatures, or beautiful driftwood as a memento of your travels to this beautiful island. For the more daring there are jet skis, professional fishing charters and scuba diving, and right at Vivonne, you can hire kayaks, quad bikes and sand boarding gear, even booking night tours.
Write a novel or paint an art masterpiece.
Osprey Heights is peaceful. Vivonne Bay has ever changing landscapes so you will never be bored. But, if its solitude you want you can throw away the relaxation CD's and listen to the waves crashing on the shore or walk on beaches where you will be lucky if you meet other people at times. Spot the rare Hooded Plover or the Sooty and Pied Oyster Catcher and from the comfort of the balcony at Osprey Heights, see one of only a few raptors in the area, the beautiful and skilful Osprey that lives on the Harriet River - right on your doorstep. Sometimes, you will see echidna, a koala, kangaroos and wallabies, a possum or a goanna...just outside the door at Osprey.
You can walk the coastline to your heart's content and often not see sight of another human ... just you and the wilderness. You will need plenty of space on your digital camera, good hiking shoes and a good companion.
