Laos is to be avoided in your travel planning. It is now very difficult to enter. No visa on arrival was available so my friend was forced back onto the plane he had just gotten off of and was sent back to Bangkok.
Last year, I and another friend were trying to check into our flight from Bangkok to Vientiane only to be told that we had to have US1000 each in cash (does anyone still use cash when traveling?) in order to board the plane. Since there was no way to get US cash at that point, we had to cancel our Laos plans. No refunds were granted.
It's a shame because Laos is a beautiful country. I've been there twice and had no problems but it seems to have become much less welcoming now.

Just okay
Friendly and helpful woman on the front desk.
Room looked nothing like the photos. Tired features.
Towels didn't dry us at all and only option to hang them was directly above the toilet. Water leaked from shower and sink.
Walls so thin that you could hear everything, including people talking downstairs and we were on the second floor.
Breakfast options were good but fruit chopped on the same board as onions, so tasted awful. No fresh milk for coffee and when the powdered milk ran out, we were told there was simply no more and a shrug.
The foyer and dining area was so dusty. Everything covered in it and a staff members personal toiletries left in the wash area of the dirty downstairs guest toilet area.
On the plus side; just down the road from an amazing night market with excellent food and reasonably well located for walking to attractions and the local bus station.
