Beach Access:There are concrete stairs that lead you right down to the beach from the house that is full of arguably some of the best oysters and clams in the world! It is a private beach so you are welcome to enjoy all the oysters and clams you want (during your stay), just please leave the shells behind on the beach when you are done (this facilitates the “reseeding” and spawn of the oysters).
Dock: House has a deep water dock with moorage for boats up to 50’ and 50 amp power. Our dock is one of the few deep-water 135’ docks in Union (or Hood Canal in general) that is not associated with a resort/marina. Most residential docks in the area are grounded (or in extremely shallow water) at low tide. The south end of the canal from Union to Belfair (although the eastern end near Belfair is very, very shallow and mostly unswimmable at low tide) are typically the only place you find residential docks because of the calm, tranquil waters.
Toys: There are two double kayaks, two stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), an aluminum row boat, inflatable trampoline and slide (in the water seasonally—about June through end of September and shared with our other house next door when our family is in town), and life jackets.
OTHER FEATURES: The home has WiFi throughout and high-end whole-house water filtration (almost all the homes in the area are on well service so a good filtration system is recommended, although many homes do not). There are plenty of linens for guests and dedicated spa towels for guests to use. A pack-n-play is available for young children’s sleeping comfort, so you don’t need to haul one with you. We also have two extra luxurious inflatable EZ Beds (one full and one twin) that can be available, if needed. (Please inquire ahead of time if interested). Due to the proximity to the Skokomish River, the fishing can be spectacular right off the dock. During specific runs, it is not uncommon to see dozens of boats trolling right near the dock parallel to the shoreline. You can fish off the dock, but please remember you need the appropriate licenses through Fish and Wildlife for crabbing, shrimping or fishing—even if off the dock.
NEARBY ATTRACTIONS: Union Attractions. The home is a few short minutes to the award-winning Alderbrook Resort & Spa, Alderbrook/Union Marina (with boat launch), Alderbrook golf course, Robin Hood Resort, and several interesting and unique boutique shops, coffee shops, and, of course, the Union Country Store where you can enjoy a scoop of magnificent Olympic Mountain Ice Cream! While an easy drive to some of these places, it is a more enjoyable trip to paddle via provided kayaks, SUPs, or paddling/cruising in the aluminum row boat. Alderbrook and the Marina (also affiliated with Alderbrook) have places to tie up or pull out on the beach. There is live music most nights throughout the town.
HIKING. There are several great hikes in the general vicinity. The closest hike would be at Twanoh State Park and the trail takes you along a stream (full of salmon in the late fall) and zig zags you up the mountain and back down through a through a heavily treed forest. Along the 101 and Skokomish River Road there are several other magnificent hikes--some through forests and many along rivers or lakes. There are hikes for all skill levels and ages.
NEAR UNION. Hoodsport is a short drive (or boat ride from our dock—they have a marina where you can tie up). While small, the town boats several interesting restaurants, a grocery store, several boutiques, and even some wine tasting rooms. Hama Hama Oyster Saloon is relatively short drive away (north of Hoodsport) and is a great place to experience oysters. Their outdoor eating area and magnificent oyster presentation (cooked or raw, or both) should not be missed. They also have a gift shop where you can get everything from oysters, dipping sauces (AMAZING), to smoked salmon to take home. The Olympic National Park is an outdoor paradise with endless possibilities to explore. Farther north on the 101 will take you to the entrance of the Olympic National Park which also offers several amazing hikes (i.e. Staircase).
