Set on 75 private acres with spectacular views of Wilson’s Promontory across the ocean, Shellback is a unique country property with a ‘hidden away’ feel.
“Like you, we especially loved the slowly changing seascape and the fantastic moods of the place…….Apricot sunrises, squalls sweeping in over the hill from the west, cloudbursts and glorious sunsets.” Ian Smyth 2017
The surprisingly luxurious house is nestled away from the main road beyond a paddock, two dams and down a tree lined road-way. The house has its own fenced enclosure. Sheep or cattle are grazed by the neighboring farmer, and are often seen quietly grazing in the paddocks surrounding the house.
The lower one third of the property the owners have dedicated to wildlife conservation. Several creeks meander through the bushland and walking tracks have been cut, so there is plenty of exploring to do without leaving the property. A map of the trails will be provided to guide your exploration.
Wildlife
It’s not unusual to see an array of wildlife in the bushland and rolling pastures around Shellback- Kangaroos and Wallabys often roam close by and Koalas, Possums, Wombats and Echidnas can be spotted too. The local Wedge-tailed Eagles are common visitors and are often seen hunting in pairs. There is always a myriad of birds including Galah’s, Cockatoo’s, Blue Wrens, Swallows and our favourite - Black Cockatoos.
Beaches
The closest beaches are Bear Gully and Walkerville South - a quick six minutes drive away. Walkerville is the location for the enchanting children’s book “Magic Beach” by renowned Australian children’s author Allison Lester. The beach is beautiful, offering sandy stretches, climbing rocks and rock pools. When you are there it’s easy to imagine how Allison dreamt up the magicial events in the book. Even in peak season it is rarely crowded. If seclusion is your thing, you can walk toward Bear Gully and usually find a beach all to yourself. There is awesome snorkeling around Arch Rock.
Landscape
The road to Cape Liptrap passes through some of the most beautiful, lush and undulating farm and bushland. About one third of the peninsula is National/Coastal Park, with farmland nestled within. Shellback is one of only a handful of country properties located on this peninsula. Rainfall in South Gippsland is higher than the rest of Victoria, so the landscape stays lush long after west and central Victoria has browned off.
The green rolling hills of the peninsula stretch right out to the Cape, where steep cliffs drop off to the Bass Strait below. It is the second most southerly point of mainland Australia. Cape Liptrap juts out and picks up swell created miles out in the Southern Ocean, which crashes heavily on the cliffs below the lighthouse. It is a powerful place: Harshly beautiful.
The House
Recently renovated in 2015/16, the house has a fully renovated kitchen, new bathrooms, double glazed windows and a large deck. We’re sure you will find every comfort you want and need at Shellback.
Things To Do
Pack your wet weather gear and explore the grounds even if it is raining. Play bocce on the lawn, table tennis in the shed, play family board games on the floor, sit by the fire with a glass of red, sketch the rolling hills, read a book, spot wildlife through the binoculars or cook up a feast to eat on the expansive deck. Admire the changing scenery, stargaze after dark and enjoy the tranquillity, you wont see or even hear a car while on the property. Let the kids run wild in packs, making up imaginary games and exploring unsupervised. It is rare to find a place where there is no traffic to worry about. As adults we vividly remember those wonderful days of childhood freedom that kids rarely experience these days. Read the guest reviews for other activity suggestions.
