Johnny Horn Trail House St. John Overlooking Coral Bay

Want to really get away? This 2-bedroom eco contemporary house is perched above Coral Bay, right next to a hiking trail in the U.S. Virgin Islands National Park.
“A perfect nature retreat, feels like you’re in the trees," described one reviewer.
With a deck spanning the width of the house, and lovely views of the sailboats of Coral harbor along with Bordeaux Mountain in the background, this house is secluded, yet offers proximity to the best of St. John.
Johnny Horn Trail is a well-known park hiking route -- hike 1 mile through the park to Waterlemon Cay, the island's best snorkeling with sea turtles, or head downhill to the quaint town and laid-back restaurants and bars of Coral Bay. Or hop in your 4-wheel drive (a must!) for a 10-minute trip for water sports at Cinnamon Bay and access to some of the world's finest beaches.
Repeat: A 4-wheel drive vehicle is a must to reach this house. It's not that rough -- read the reviews -- but it's up a dirt and gravel road that's steep in spots. Part of the adventure! Most visitors to St. John find a 4-wheel drive such as a Jeep is helpful for getting around the island anyway.
The house features an outdoor tropical shower and wood floors that feel good on bare feet, reminding of the island era of the Maho Bay Camp -- open-air, tree frogs singing, but with a modern touch. It's a screened house with ceiling fans and no A/C.
Wrote one recent guest: “House is nature ... amazing ... birds donkeys lizards blooming flowers ... outdoor amazing shower ... fantastic view ... all the gear you will need.”
The house is a private getaway for a couple or more. It has two open bedrooms, each with a Queen bed and one with a loft bed perfect for a child. Additionally, there is a double-size futon in the living area. The home is family-friendly and is perfect for those who like to hike and enjoy the sounds of nature.
Comes with ceiling fans, a huge sectional sofa, party lights, a hammock, a table, chairs, an umbrella, and a gas BBQ grill. The deck overlooking the sailboats of Coral Bay is spot-on for lounging, reading, dining, sunning, and star gazing.
No need to bring much: the house is stocked and ready with beach chairs & towels, nice linens, and a cooler. Hook your iPod into the stereo and fire up the blender. We have WiFi, and AT&T phones work great here (Verizon you may be out of luck). For eco sustainable vacationing, the house sports a 13,000-gallon rainwater collection cistern, with a solar hot water heater.
As another guest noted: “Magical tree house! The outdoor shower is heaven.”

A Wonderful Getaway
A beautiful home with an amazing view of the bay. We felt like we were so far from everything, yet we were close to everything we were looking for. Couldn't have asked for a better Coral Bay experience!

Amazing deck view
Coral Bay was our laid back and relaxed choice. The house was perfect! Once you get up the road, the views and wild birds are your reward. We absolutely loved the covered deck and enjoyed hanging there at night after our full day and in the morning with coffee. Sarah was by quick to respond and super helpful with any questions we had regarding St. John or the house.

Beautiful views!
The house was cute with everything we needed except food, drinking water and clothes. Sarah was very responsive to our requests and was a wonderful hostess!!! Beware though. When they say you need a 4 wheel drive to get there- there is a reason. It is a steep, bumpy, rocky road to the house. But the view from the front porch is amazing!!!

Magical week
We had such an amazing week!! The house very comfortably fit myself, my husband and our 12 and 14-year-old children. The house is lovely and serene, it so clean with wonderful views of Coral Bay. It’s so peaceful. We love seeing the hummingbirds and sitting on the gorgeous deck. We loved the outdoor shower. Sarah, the host was so accommodating, so helpful and attentive! She was full of great information about St. John if we had any questions about activities or places to eat. We will definitely be coming back!!

Wonderful Johnny Horn Stay
We loved our stay on the Johnny Horn Trail! The outdoor shower and view are better than advertised & the host couldn’t have been more wonderful. Would highly recommend and stay again on our next visit. The trek up the trail isn’t as steep as it sounds depending on what you’re used to, but AWD/4WD is a must. The Jeep and Subaru forester handled it fine but the rental agency gave us a 2WD Pathfinder on Day 1 & it never stood a chance.

Magical Tree House
Our stay was so great! The house was better than I imagined. The view from the covered porch was magical and the outdoor shower was heaven. The hummingbirds were a constant source of entertainment. I would definitely stay here again. The host was very easy to communicate with and there was even a homemade key lime pie in the freezer for us! It was delicious.

Relaxing and adventurous
Getting to the property was an adventure, but the reward is a beautiful view and relaxing island breeze. The house has everything you need and nothing more. Be sure to stock up on provisions, including drinking water. We did not realize that there is no drinking water available onsite. Occasionally we could hear the neighbors, but mostly we heard the sound of nature.

Property was absolutely as represented. By our fourth day we had mastered the intimidating drive up to the house. We had five in our group- house would be perfect for 4. Loved the outside shower and spent a lot of time relaxing on the deck. Great hike over to Watermelon and close access to the restaurants (including Skinny Legs) in Coral Bay. We had a wonderful time- thank you!

Perfection!
This was our second time staying at Johnny Horn Trail and it was perfection as usual! The house itself is great and the views of Coral Bay are breathtaking! My family loves the open air concept and the outdoor shower is always a hit! The owner Sarah was amazing to work with! She was super accommodating and went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect!! We will continue to stay at their great house for years to come!!

Private Hill Top Adventure!
What a wonderful time we had. Just the best place ever. The view is so beautiful and we really enjoyed the privacy. The outdoor shower is such a bonus. Nothing like washing up outside after a day on the beach. The house had everything you could ask for. Fully loaded kitchen and all the beach gear you would want. We will be back VERY soon for sure!

Beautiful View off the beaten path in Coral Bay
Our family (2 kids ages 10 and 12) stayed in Coral Bay for 4 nights in July and had a blast. The house is in a remote location up a very steep, rocky road, so you have lots of privacy and an amazing view. The road is no joke - you definitely need 4WD. The kids enjoyed the hammock on the deck and we all loved the outdoor shower. Down the hill nearby there’s easy access to Skinny Legs, a couple other restaurants, and a small market Love City. The house has plenty of space and is very clean.

We loved hanging out among the treetops!!!
Our stay at the house was absolutely perfect for us - nothing beats waking up with the sun and stepping out onto a deck that makes you feel like you are completely alone nestled among the tree tops. The house had everything we needed, including all the gear for snorkeling at all of the beaches on the island. The drive up the mountain was intimidating at first, but we became pros by the end!!! The size and space was perfect for us, and being right on the trail made for an excellent (though strenuous) hike to and from waterlemon cay. Would highly recommend staying here - we plan to come again!!!

Hideaway with a view
We loved our stay except for the drive. It is just a bit rutted and steep but makes it all an adventure! The house is so serene and we loved the outdoor space to relax and watch the birds. The kitchen is well stocked. There really was nothing lacking for us to stay for 10 days. If you want to get away this may be perfect. Also you will be pretty close to Skinny Legs and some East End beaches. Walk to the top of the hill and watch the sunrise!

We had a lovely stay at the Eco House! The property is as described/pictured and has *everything* you need for a stay that is perfectly comfortable, but yet a little bit off-grid and more adventurous. We loved the shower! We were worried about hot water with 5 of us showering after returning from beach days, but not an issue! The hummingbirds were fun to feed and we loved the open air, the view, the chatty birds, and the white outdoor lights at night. The road (...trail really) leading up to the house is no joke!!! Thankful we had a Jeep and read the reviews on it. It's a great little house!

Amazing Property!
My Fiance, myself, and another couple just got back from staying at this property in St. John and it was amazing! Perfect modern bungaloo surrounded by the beautiful tropical forest with a great view of Coral Bay. Great hiking trails and beaches close by. Very roomy and clean! We had all the amenities you need at the house. Loved that they supplied the beach towels and coolers. We definitely packed coolers daily to take to the beach with us. Aslo, we went shopping at local grocery store and had all the kitchen utensils (Pots/pans/knifes) we needed to make meals at the house. Loved that they had a nice grill available for a few dinner nights at the house as well. Also, utilize the coffee maker and blender that worked very well for smoothies and frozen drinks. The outdoor shower was a great feature too! The lanai was perfect for hanging out and enjoying the beautiful view. No complaints what so ever! The owners were very friendly and great resources if you have any questions. We would definitely stay at this property again and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience St. john!

A dream location
Our family of 3 loved our stay at the Johnny Horn Trail cottage. The house had everything we needed for our 6 days in St John. The view from the main bedroom each morning was sublime. We were able to cook multiple meals in the kitchen during our stay. The extra touches like having a cooler, snorkel gear, beach chairs, and the key lime pie were all perfect. The outdoor shower was fantastic. The house served as the perfect place for us while we traveled all over the island each day snorkeling and exploring. We enjoyed multiple meals down the mountain at Skinny Legs. The owner was so responsive to all my questions. The only thing I'd like to note for future visitors is that while multiple people have noted that a four wheel drive is absolutely necessary, I'd like to add that a four wheel drive with clearance is best. We booked maybe two months before our visit and had trouble finding an affordable Jeep Wrangler. But we did find a 4WD Jeep Compass. While we were able to make it up and down the mountain we had to do so very very carefully as there are multiple points where the vehicle has to dip down into a small culvert across the road. It made for a much more stressful drive and we found ourselves limiting to just one trip up and down the road per day- staying out for 10 plus hours some days. Also make sure your rental has strong tires. Ours had a tire or two that were worn and that's not a great combination with the gravel and grade of this road.

Great place to stay
This was the 2nd visit to St John, Coral Bay, and we love it. The Eco House was perfect and had everything we needed. The host was attentive and answered our questions right away. We spent our evenings on the back deck absorbing the beautiful view and stars. Hummingbirds visited the feeder all day. We even had a visit from a tree frog! The house has plenty of windows and never felt hot. The nighttime breeze was heavenly. The road to the house is the beginning of the Johnny Horn Trail and is VERY steep. You WILL need 4 wheel drive. We hiked the Johnny Horn trial to Waterlemon Bay and it was a fun hike with plenty of ruins to see. The hike is not for anyone who isn’t used to hiking. Bring plenty of water. I’m getting off track here. Lol. I LOVED the outside shower! Did I mention there is room for 2. Best way to conserve water! I highly recommend the Eco House for your stay. However, it is NOT a luxury house, but if you want the basics with a super comfy bed, this place is perfect! We highly recommend the Eco House. ❤️ we will return

charming tropical retreat in the woods
The design of this tropical retreat is a wonderful open air concept. We loved the layout and the breeze that comes with the open air concept. The kitchen is spacious and great for cooking. The concrete countertops are a nice touch. The outdoor deck is large and a great place to relax, however, you are on top of a hill so expect BUGS & BEES. You cannot enjoy the evening because of the mosquitos and gnats. The doors and windows are screens which offer no secruity. We didn't have any issues but anyone could have robbed us blind while we were at the beach or sleeping. Tips: This place is perfect for a couple or group of four people that are outdoor lovers and seek adventure. Adding anymore than 4 people would be a tight fit. The table outside only seats 4 people. You will need 4X4 to reach this villa and it is a steep climb up rocks. There is no washer or dryer accessible so it makes a long stay tricky. Suggestions for improvement: Buy NEW knives and non stick pans. We are big cookers and had issues with these items. Put latches on the screen doors so that they create a tight seal against the bugs coming inside. Add internet and TV because if it rains or you want a quiet evening at the villa there isn't anything to do if the bugs are too bad to be outside. Praises: The property managers Clark and Kathy are the best!!! We had a bee infestation (I am allergic) and they moved us to another property with a different owner. They moved us with no hassle and smiles on their faces. They are the reason we are enjoying our last few days! Next time we come back to STJ we will book one of their properties!

Two week stay
Just got back from a two week stay on STJ. We picked this cottage based on the VRBO description and the description is pretty much spot on. - You will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. - The road is steep and bumpy. - The folding mechanism on the beach chairs were rusted out. Two different chairs broke during our stay and not from abuse. I talked to Sandi about it and she said they would be replaced. - The house has no glass in the windows. It does have screens and storm shutters/doors if you need to enclose the house for some reason. It should catch breezes nicely. We did not have any bug problems in the house. - That said, at least during our stay, it seemed that any wind on the island missed the cut up the Johnny Horn Trail valley. What breeze we did feel out on the balconies was blocked by the screens. We bought an additional fan at the hardware store before our second night in the cabin to blow on the bed at night. It would be nice if the ceiling fans were a bit lower and a bit more powerful. - Master bed was very comfortable and the view out the screen doors was great. The bed in the other room left a bit to be desired. - The hike over to Water Lemon Cay was really nice. Leave early, take water, and enjoy the ruins on the way to the best snorkeling on the island. - The kitchen was well stocked for our purposes. We cooked breakfast most mornings and ate a few evening meals at the cabin as well. - If you are looking for a resort like experience, this is not for you. - If you are looking for a "roughing it" type experience, this is not for you. - If you are easy going, pretty low maintenance, and spend a lot of time out enjoying everything St. John has to offer, this place is pretty much spot on.
