Charming Grade II listed cottage located in a hamlet- family and child friendly

This charming Grade II listed cottage was originally built in the 1830s as a mill workers cottage, constructed with stone from the local quarry, and has also retained a number of original features. Set in a quiet hamlet near to St Austell and with easy access to the A30 the cottage is perfect for couples, friends, and families and provides an excellent home-from-home from which to explore Cornwall.

The kitchen and bathroom have been recently refurbished to a high specification. The kitchen is fully equipped and benefits from an induction hob, electric fan oven, built-in dishwasher, washing machine, and fridge freezer. There are two wood burning stoves in the open fireplaces and downstairs underfloor heating as well as electric heaters in the bedrooms and an electric towel rail in the bathroom. The cottage has two good sized double bedrooms with two single beds in the third bedroom, which will comfortably sleep 4 adults and 2 children or 5 adults. A cot and high chair are available for free on request.

The cottage has ample private parking for 2-3 cars. There is an external area for drying clothes and sitting out with table and chairs with a stream to the front of the property. Bicycles and surf boards can be securely stored around the back of the property or in the shed.

The rural setting is convenient for access to the clay trails for cycling, running, and walking with the China Clay museum (Wheal Martyn) a 5 minute stroll. Local pub, restaurant, and museum café serving good homemade food all within walking distance. Beaches on the south coast are a 10 minute drive with the nearest sandy beach Par Sands approximately 15 minutes drive and the famous surfing beaches at Newquay are 25 minutes drive.

The Eden Project is a 10 minutes drive or 30 minute cycle ride. The market town of St Austell is a 5 minute drive or a very pleasant 45 minute walk along dedicated footpaths. The nearest supermarkets and some restaurants and pubs are in St Austell. For further shopping, bars, restaurants, and clubs Truro is a 30-40 minute drive or there are regular trains from St Austell train station.

The Clay Trails are literally on the doorstep and provide a fantastic way to explore this part of Cornwall on foot or bike and are very popular with dog walkers. I am always happy to provide advice or suggestions on things to see and do in the local area as I lived in the cottage for over 4 years.

Children welcome. Unfortunately not suitable for wheelchair access due to the narrow doorways. Please enquire about short stays during school holidays. Due to issues with people shutting dogs in the property, we are no longer allowing pets. Assistance dogs are, of course, welcome.

Great location
The location of the cottage made up for what was lacking in the accommodation. Beautiful scenery and well located for so many activities! So much to do and see … 10 days wasn’t enough. Great for holidaying with family and dog. The property has so much potential but just needs a bit of TLC and organising in places. Lots of ornaments and plastic flowers which rather than adding charm just add more places for dust to gather. Had to mend some of the bedroom furniture/ door fixings before we could use it (simple job) which adds to tired feel. Little things like ensuring hoover empty so that we didn’t have to remove previous visitors dirt from filters etc, ensuring hair removed from all plug holes, ensuring courtyard tidy and set up with furniture to sit out (note this area not enclosed) would leave a better impression. The under floor heating wasn’t working whilst we were there and even though mid summer the lounge was cold and damp without this. We used the plug in heaters to warm up in the mornings. The kitchen is well equipped, and there are plenty of books and games. Thorough welcome pack which points out all local amenities - although welcome email said would be milk etc on arrival and this wasn’t the case for us. 3rd bedroom definitely more for one person than 2, we had to reorganise the furniture in order to get 2 people in there and be able to boost immersion heater. Quick response from owner when messaged about other issues during stay.

2 Mill Cottages
A very comfortable, cosy cottage ideally located for what we wanted to don on a week's break. Just two tiny 'moans'. The cottage was a bit on the cold side when we arrived on late Saturday afternoon - we would have appreciated the heating being turned up a little more and the duvets could have been a little thicker. Other than that a cosy, comfortable well appointed cottage that i am more than happy to recommend.

In all, beautiful, enchanting cottage... BUT due to the property's age and recent wet weather during our stay, Smell of damp??? was awful mainly in lounge. cottage had lots of scented candles (tho used/empty) so obvious these were needed & used for the smell prior. Owner of cottage was offended by my words of smell & making me sick!! which I did not intend to upset her with. Just the truth. Owner Not understanding at all, said she had visited previous week to our stay and all was fine!! Yes, but that week the weather was warm !! Owner was very quick to advise NO REFUND, which I did not ask for, at all. Also she mentioned carer of property was ill. (did I need to know this?) cottage needs a really good clean. fridge, cutlery draws etc dirty, food crumbs, dust. table lamp shades in bedroom, thick with layer of dust. cobwebs around bed . just needs tender love & care. this is our 2nd use of virbo! comparing with our first cottage, which was exceptional, out of this world, also lots of loving touches. this one however was just ..... tearfully a shame.

The property was in a very interesting location in a lane close to the Wheal Martyn museum. It was a good starting point for visiting the beaches near St Austell & Fowey and the Eden Project. We were happy to find a place that could accommodate our dog.

Could be better with a clean and fix up!
We stayed in the cottage for 2 weeks in August with our 3 kids and family dog. While the cottage is certainly very sweet from the outside we were disappointed with the level of cleanliness, overall condition and quality of fixtures and fittings inside. We raised the issues with the owner who we understand, due to the pandemic, hadn't been able to visit in person for a while, and she responded very quickly to assure us she will investigate. With a proper deep clean, some attention to maintenence and a refresh of a few bits and pieces this would be a nice place to stay for a small family. The small bedroom is a single and underbed trundle rather than 2 x single beds and the proximity to the busy A road right outside wasn't to our liking but that's a personal preference. The cottage is located well for Eden Project and a 30min drive to the great beaches of Newquay and Perranporth which our kids loved. We also had a great day at Bodmin Jail. We did have a nice stay in the area overall, the owner seems really nice and a good communicator so I'm sad to leave this review and not be more positive. We hope the cottage can be sorted to improve the stay for future guests.

The cottage was lovely and we enjoyed our time there. however, the cottage is very close to a very busy road and the parking was a bit of a squeeze for 2 cars. The neighbours are not all friendly and do not seem to like having holidaymakers in their area. we received a very rude note from one of them.

It's fantastically located close to the Eden Project and Heligan as well as beaches and loads more attractions. Mill Cottage In October
The property was just as described and true to the photos. It was warm and cosy and well equipped with everything we needed, despite being catapulted into winter over the record rainfall weekend. The property was off the beaten track, which suited us. It was easy and convenient to drive to the local attractions of the Eden Project and the Gardens of Helligan of visit St Austells and Charlestown. A car was essential, especially as the weather was poor and there was no where to walk to of an evening to get a drink or something to eat. We used some local knowledge and did not visit the nearby Pub. The accommodation was spacious albeit there were only two of us staying there and while it would sleep 5 comfortably the living space was quite snug when friends and their baby joined us for an evening. We would cetainly consider using the property again.
