Deer View Chalet: A Beautiful Escape

This charming home (circa 2005) sits across the street from the Shelter Cove Golf Course and airport, and boasts a clear view of the Pacific Ocean.

Pilots, take note. This Shelter Cove getaway is a short walking distance from the airstrip’s south end, and planes parked there can easily be seen from the house.

Our three story chalet has a family/TV/game room and a garage on the ground floor; kitchen, living and dining room along with two bedrooms, a den, full bath, laundry, and pantry, on the main floor. A full size washer and dryer, an extra fridge, and ping pong table are located in the garage. The house is also equipped with a outside shower, perfect for guests returning from the beach.

The well-equipped kitchen will make any cook happy. The pantry provides storage for guest food and houses small appliances. Also, a reverse osmosis drinking water system is handy at the sink.

The primary suite, on the third floor, has a separate bath, cathedral ceiling, and balcony that overlooks the main floor.

You’ll enjoy the oceanview from the front deck or indoors by the fireplace. Sunlight floods the living area which boasts a 22-foot ceiling. The bedrooms stay comfortably cool and dark in the back of the home.

The den fashioned with a queen sleeper sofa also serves as a cozy reading nook. Other beds include two California kings and one queen.

Nearby amenities include: Shelter Cove RV Campground Store & Deli (0.25 mile), Shelter Cove General Store (2.3 miles), Delgada Pizza and Bakery, Mi Mochima Venezuelan Restaurant, and the Gyppo Ale Mill.

Scenic nearby destinations include Cape Mendocino Lighthouse and Black Sands beach. Readers will discover local authors’ books at the local gift shop next to the General Store.

Smoking, pets and parties are not allowed. Thank you for respecting the quiet, peaceable nature of our neighborhood.

We hope you love the cove and enjoy your stay at Deer View Chalet as much as we do!

Ocean adventure
We’ve been visiting Shelter Cove since the 90’s. We normally fish for salmon, bottom fish and crab. Fishing is always good and we always leave with ice chests full of goodness. This year was no acceptation, accept for salmon. My grandkids always enjoy tide pooling and they enjoyed some nice low tides. Golf was fun as well. Shelter Cove is just a great place to vacation. The house was right in the middle of everything and very comfortable for everyone.

Spacious, clean, and good location
Our stay was great and pretty much exactly as described on the listing. Amazing ocean view. Only drawback was that the downstairs area smelled strongly of new paint, but I imagine that will subside over time. Highly recommend!

Fourth of July Family Vacation
Beautiful home, nicely furnished with comfortable beds, Everything we needed was there! Close walk to the beach, tide pools, restaurants and store. Comes with a great ping pong table that we enjoyed! The communication with the owners was excellent! We would rent this place again in a heartbeat! Had a wonderful time hiking, playing golf, fishing, riding bikes, playing cards at night and reminiscing when we lived here in the summers in the 70’s and 80’s so my husband could fish commercially for salmon. This place and the owners exceeded our expectations!

Awesome property in great location
Fantastic property in great spot near the action in Shelter Cove. Great communication with DG and very clear house instructions (especially check in). House was in immaculately clean condition. We loved the set up, views, and modern appliances in the main social space of the house. It is a short walk to the brewery and other attractions in Shelter Cove. Would highly recommend!

Beautiful Get Away on the CA Lost Coast
This place was wonderful for our family on our trip to the Avenue of the Giants (Giant Redwoods). The views were incredible and the house had a little bit of everything for everyone. Plenty of room for our family (4 adults & 2 young children) to spread out and come together. It was walking distance to the local brewery/restaurants/market, which was a huge plus for us after the long drive up. If we ever find ourselves headed up to the Lost Coast again (and I'd love to since it should be a "California Bucket List" item for everyone), I would 100% stay here again. The Host was wonderful in their communication and we had everything we needed. Our family who had traveled in from out-of-state were blown away with how wonderful this magical little town and this great home. Thank you for letting us stay here!

Lost Coast Get Away Season 2
The house was beautiful and peaceful! We used the house as a base camp for hiking the southern portion of the Lost Coast Trail and it was perfect. Plenty of room for everyone and hiking gear. All the rooms have great amenities and nicely furnished. For the lucky ones who got to hold down the fort, the views and location were amazing. Thank you so much and excited to come back!!

High Quality Retreat
Beautiful high-quality property, clean, well designed, well appointed, and in a great location. DG was an excellent communicator and made sure we knew what was supplied and what was not. We bought our groceries in Eureka on the way in and never had to leave Shelter Cove during our 7-day stay (the General Store in SC has a surprising variety of items but not everything). Spent time on the sunny deck (it faces southeast) and hiked, cycled and walked throughout the neighborhood. There are two black sand beaches, and the bigger/better one is a ten minute drive. You can visit the seals any time of any day within a ten minute walk. Loved watching the small planes take off and land at the airstrip — just a few times a day. Friendly neighbors. Beautiful in good weather and bad. A place we would buy if we were in the market!

Super Shelter Cove Stay
We loved our stay at this beautiful, comfortable, and welcoming property. The owners anticipated our every need. Our one suggestion would be to have a tv on the main floor so everyone can watch what they want and/or the cook can enjoy some shows while preparing dinner. Can’t wait to return.

Go for the peace, quiet, beauty
The home is beautifully situated, overlooking tiny Shelter Cove village and the ocean. It is modern and in excellent condition and was immaculately clean upon arrival. We knew in advance to bring our own food because full-sized grocery stores are 45 min. away. The kitchen is very well-stocked, in terms of cookware and dishes, for real cooking, which we did and had great meals. (The kitchen could use silicone or wooden toast tongs. Hard to remove toast without unplugging toaster and using an implement.) The beds and pillows were comfortable, the bathrooms were very nice (good showers, thick towels). The main living space was wonderful, with its two-story-high ceiling and windows looking out onto the Pacific. It was always flooded with light. The view was "natural TV." We walked a lot every day, especially along Black Sands Beach, which even during July, we had mostly to ourselves. It is a fairly short walk to get to this beautiful beach. We also enjoyed walking to other points of interest along the rocky bluffs. It was fun to watch the sunbathing seals and see the pelicans, cormorants, and gulls. Two evenings, we sat in the beer garden at the brew pub, Gyppo, and had good beers, while looking out on the ocean, the tiny airstrip, the "golf course," and the grazing deer (everywhere). Shelter Cove was as quiet as can be. About the only sound were the birds. We rarely even encountered other people. At night, it was completely quiet and the stars were brilliant...almost as though one were out in the middle of the ocean (almost no light pollution). To enjoy Shelter Cove, I think one goes there for what it offers: A remote, small, peaceful, quiet place that is stunningly beautiful. The "entertainment" is the natural beauty of the setting. It likely remains quiet and peaceful because of its remote setting: One has to travel about 45 minutes over a narrow, winding, hilly road to get there. If not used to such roads, the drive is a bit "thrilling," shall I say. (Drive carefully!) However, the drive is well worth it if one values the unique qualities of Shelter Cove. Go there to get away from the pace and stress of modern life. Bring good books, prepare good food and enjoy good wine, take long walks, sleep in total quietude. (If you can stay long enough, write a novel!) Restore yourself -- body and mind. Great visit. Should have stayed longer. Hope to be able to return.

Shelter Cove and the Lost Coast
Spent a few days at this lovely property with three friends while doing some hikes on the Lost Coast. Very comfortable accommodations that worked perfectly for our group. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. Large windows provided views of the ocean and the resident deer population. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.
