The Red Winehouse is an impressive old winery (canava), a wine producing and storing estate transformed into a contemporary villa. It was renovated by a famous Greek architect and stands as a model for combining traditional architecture with minimal, industrial design. The Red Winehouse is a private villa of 240 sqm, arranged in two levels (1.5m height difference), and comprises of 1 large, open living room with a dining area and an open kitchen, 2 private bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (one is en suite) and 2 additional sleeping areas (a mezzanine and a semi-open room). A private, split-level courtyard of approx. 100 sq.m., provides multiple sitting corners and shaded areas, while a terrace offers spectacular viewpoints towards the village and the sea. The property can comfortably fit 8 people.
This impressive construction was achieved by Santorinian craftsmen, using local materials like Aspa (volcanic ash) and Poria (red volcanic stones), bush hammered around the doors and windows. Stairs are built out of volcanic stone, while concrete is used on all floors throughout the property, blurring the inside-outside boundaries and feeling of the house. Rumor has it that iron railings in all windows were used to protect the inhabitants' from pirates. The main hall (canava), with its impressive proportions and the domed roof, is not carved but external, following the typology of a church. Built-in benches along the stone walls used in the past to support the wine barrels' movement, are now transformed into stepped sitting spaces. The main hall (canava) accommodates the living room-dining room, along with the open plan kitchen. At the front of the space and right above the main entrance, a spacious open mezzanine with a double bed is provided, potentially used as a third bedroom. On the rear side of the canava, a hidden sleeping area, separated by robust pillars which support the dome, can be used as a fourth bedroom.
More specifically:
On the upper ground level, one can find the Master bedroom (king size bed) with en suite bathroom, a second bedroom (two single beds-connected). Both bedrooms have separate entrances/access to the upper and rear patio. Also, a second bathroom is located right next to the second bedroom.
On the lower ground level, one can find the main living area with the dining table, an open plan kitchen, 1 sleeping area (semi-open room, double bed) and 1 sleeping area (Mezzanine, double bed).
The house is decorated in a minimal style. The fully equipped kitchen in combination with the courtyard and the large living room (16.00 m length x 7.00 m width x 6.50 m height) make this place ideal for preparing and enjoying great dinners indoors (mostly during daytime) or outdoors, especially in the evening. Guests have exclusive access to the house and all its facilities (both interior and exterior). It is ideal for 4- 8 persons.
The Villa is situated in the historical settlement of Finikia, which is a protected neighborhood in the outskirts of Oia. No cars are allowed within the village's narrow streets, allowing for peaceful and relaxing holidays. The villa approx. 200m away from the bus station/parking/main road, a 100-200m walk from the tavernas of Finikia and a 600-800m walk from Oia. The closest sandy beach (Baxedes) is 1600m downhill, however due to the high summer temperature, it is advised to get there by bus or a rented vehicle.
