Le Belvedere: Mountain Magic & Timeless Charm

A small magical "sanctuary", a precious place which has preserved its authentic pastoral character, offering to the true lovers of nature all the pleasures offered by a space still wild. Perfect for families, groups or a romantic escape, Le Belvedere is a stylish and inviting private home with breathtaking views of the Haute Pyrenees. Enjoy candlelit dinners, casual BBQs, explore preserved natural trails or savour local cuisine. From hiking and skiing to canyoning and rafting, adventure awaits.

There is something magical about this place, it seems to have the ability to capture everyone’s hearts, people simply love coming here. ‘Le Belvedere’ is very comfortable and a place you can stop and breathe and relax and absorb what this special region has to offer. The village is tranquil, and the people are very welcoming. It’s a pleasure to be a caretaker of such a beautiful house in a beautiful area.

Every room at Le Belvedere holds a memory, and every stone has a story to tell. Built over 300 years ago from local stone and chestnut wood, and finished in elegant walnut, this remarkable home has stood the test of time with grace and dignity. Largely untouched by modern renovations, Le Belvedere has required very little restoration—its authenticity and original craftsmanship speak for themselves.

Over the centuries, this grand old building has served many roles: a government office, local council house, school, and private residence. One of its most unique features is the heritage-listed wooden staircase, a masterwork of design that stands entirely unsupported by vertical beams—an architectural rarity and a testament to the ingenuity of the time.

In 1995, Jean-Marc and Dominique Crampe purchased Le Belvedere and began a 12-year labour of love, carefully and respectfully restoring the home to its original splendour. Today, guests have the privilege of enjoying this historic house in all its magnificence, complete with the comforts and conveniences of modern life.

Lovingly furnished in classic French country style, Le Belvedere offers warmth, charm, and elegance throughout. Each room has been thoughtfully decorated to reflect its heritage while offering a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.

The Grand Salon invites you to unwind with a glass of port by the crackling open fireplace, while the upstairs living room with its big, comfy sofas, entertainment system, and expansive DVD library—is perfect for cosy evenings with family and friends.

Each light-filled bedroom comes with its own private ensuite, and there’s a convenient powder room on the ground floor.

- The master suite on the first floor boasts original chestnut parquet floors, soaring ceilings, antique furnishings, and an adjoining anteroom with a small single bed—ideal for a child or extra guest.
- A charming bedroom is also located on this level.
- On the top floor, you’ll find a triple bedroom (three single beds) and a double room (one double and one single bed), both with characterful dormer windows that frame breathtaking views across the valley.

Le Belvedere is nestled in the picturesque village of Salles-Argelès, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Pyrenees. The region offers something for everyone—from canyoning, cycling, hiking, and skiing, to exploring local history, reconnecting with family, or making a pilgrimage to nearby Lourdes.

Salles is one of the oldest villages in the area, with roots tracing back to the 11th century. At its heart lies a monastery that remains active today, and aside from a few newer homes, the village has changed very little over the centuries. A network of ancient walk trails weaves through the surrounding forests, fields, and streams, linking Salles with neighbouring hamlets—perfect for exploring on foot and soaking up the timeless magic of the Pyrenees.

The property is located close to five ski stations including La Mongie and Super Bareges. It is perfectly located to explore Gavarnie, Cauterets and Lourdes either in the stunning summer or beautiful picturesque winters.

The Pyrenees are an unspoilt wilderness area of France and Spain where you can go rafting, canyoning, walking, trekking, riding and much more. Our favourite thing about our house and land is that the village of Salles has a particularly rich natural heritage, thanks to an environment that has remained very well preserved ... a small "sanctuary", a precious place which has preserved its authentic pastoral character, offering to the true lovers of nature all the pleasures offered by a space still wild, where man has found his place in harmony with the landscape: random paths through which to discover the many barns that adorn this landscape and further accent the charm of the place and we will take in the scenery, smells and warmth of this beautiful space.

One of the first things that you will notice when you arrive in the Vallee du Gaves is the four grand sites which are known worldwide: Lourdes, Gavarnie, Le Pont d’Espagne - Cauterets and the Pic du Midi.

Whether you're planning a family reunion, a wedding celebration, or a quiet escape, Le Belvedere offers an unforgettable experience steeped in history, culture, and natural beauty.

Le Belvedere is a significant part of the heritage of the 11th century village of Salles located within the ancient noble Fiefdom of Arzaas and was the most important of the 10 villages in the Valley. At the heart of village is the Chateau of Arzaas which is still in use today, and aside from the few new residences, much of the village has remained unchanged for centuries. During this time each village was linked by the small paths, still in existence today, suitable only for walking and it was this foot traffic that led to the importance and name of the village. In the 14th C a new path constructed suitable for carts to Argeles Gazost where the farmers market had stood since the 12th C and consequently the well-used paths in the Valley of Bergons were bypassed through Argeles. These paths to Salles became less used and more neglected in favour of the cart path through Argeles-Gazost which in time became the principle village in the valley. However as Salles was still the seat of the Nobles of Arzaas, their chateau and lands situated in the heart of the village, Salles still remained the second most important village in the Valley. Like many of the Pyrenean mountain villages, Salles is still linked to nearby villages via a network of walk trails that cut through forests, crop fields and streams... well worth exploring.
