We had been up to the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show from Exeter and fancied breaking the return journey around Salisbury with the intention of also attending a Sunday service at the cathedral. From that point of view The Queens Head looked ideal and overall we had a really enjoyable break, but we do a lot of overnights across the UK and were disappointed with this one. Noise: Shouting and laughing from 4 young people in the outside covered area and we had to get up to ask them to quieten down, but still very audible until they left around 23:30! The pub needs to supervise that. Dinner: Lacked cullinary care and attention to detail - vegetables were way over-cooked, textureless and tasteless, Côtes du Rhône was just proprietory stuff and didn't have any of the AOC's characteristics - the meal was generally overpriced for what it was. Getting simple, traditional pub meals right and a offering proper, affordable wines these days is not difficult and absolutely essential. However service was good and the ambience was fine. Breakfast was well cooked and okay but choice of just cash&carry cereal boxes was mean. The place had the distinct feel of a 'managed pub' and not of a country break, which we suspected was an 'owners' issue. We're used to better value for money. Shame.
