Historic Home - Victorian Stage Coach Inn

Our home is a pre-civil war era Italianate style Victorian home furnished with many period antiques. Located one hour north of Nashville in the quiet historical town of Russellville, Logan County, KY. Our property is also known as the Wallace-Byrne Home and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was a Stage Coach Inn and Tavern in the early 1800's.

The home is 4600 square feet plus another 500+ square feet of covered porches. It has five (or six) ample bedrooms and beds enough to sleep up to 17 people (all linens included). There are also couches, air mattresses, and sleeping bags. Four bathrooms have all been added over time. The main floor has 10' ceilings with a formal parlor, two dining rooms, and a master bedroom suite. The other bedrooms are located upstairs. The slaves quarters and external kitchen are now replaced with a two car garage.

The kitchen is updated to modern gourmet style with stainless steel appliances including Jennair gas stove (two ovens, 6 burners, plus hotplate), dishwasher, and two refrigerators. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, pans, utensils, and imperishable food stock for your use.

The home is within walking distance to restaurants, shops, and seven churches and many other historically significant homes in the Russellville Historic District. Our home historically was on the outside edge of town on what used to be called “High Street” -- which made it quite suitable for being a stagecoach inn and tavern. Now we are in the center of the town on the south edge of the historic district at the foot of the hills.

The builder of the original log house (parlor and dining room with loft above) was William Wallace, possible direct descendant of the William Wallace made famous by Mel Gibson in the movie “Brave Heart”. Wallace was appointed Circuit Court Judge in 1807 with a jurisdiction covered 5 counties and some 160 miles. Wallace was a Jeffersonian in politics and was a presidential elector in the National Electoral College in 1808. One of his more famous young attorney apprentices was Joseph Emory Davis, eldest brother of Jefferson Davis who later was the President of the Southern Confederacy.

A FORMER OWNER OF OUR HOME WAS SHOT BY THE JESSE JAMES GANG - and lived. This was Mr Nimrod Long the banker who was shot in the head during the bank robbery March 20, 1868 - The James gang robbed the Southern Deposit Bank in Russellville, Kentucky for $14,000. Long & wife purchased our house in 1877 leaving it to his eldest son for $1 in 1881.

The Victorian home was originally heated by eight coal fireplaces. You can still see the original coal shoot, including its own little driveway ramp up from the street, at the southwest corner. A young slave was responsible for keeping the coal bins full during winter. You can see the remains of coal throughout the coal cellar located under the Parlor. In the north yard closest to the NE entrance is a Buckeye tree (thought to be over 150 years old). This is the tree made famous by the Ohio State University mascot (but most Ohioans have never seen this kind of tree or its nut). Unfortunately this tree was damaged by a storm in 2010 and only partially stands today. But we still have a bucket of buck-eye nuts. On the north east corner of the property behind the garage by the stone fence is a concrete pad that we understand was approximately where the slave quarters were located. The original kitchen was located about where the garage is today.

Consequently, this is an older home with some updated ammenities. Our neighbors are mostly current or retired educators that love history and are very friendly and helpful. Many neighbors are active in the areas historic societies and civil war groups. If your party is really seeking a condo or set of hotel rooms style outing, please do not contact me about renting our house. This is for people who can enjoy the country and appreciate the differences of an older home.

Free WIFI Access - After long holding out that the modern era has no place in a pre-civil war home, we installed a new N-Router to provide secured internet service throughout the grounds. If you enjoy the historic aumbiance, you can ignore the wifi -- however, if you need access for work or other reasons...it is now available free with your stay. We have also have a wifi enabled DVD/blue ray player and free NetFlix for our guests to enjoy downloadable movies from a large list of options.

We recently added a 'bicycle built for two'. The tandum bike is available for check out from our in town manager.

Upon your arrival, our in-town manager will meet you with the keys, show you the house, answer questions and will try to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The whole house will be yours....its like staying in a historic home museum, yet reasonably priced. Feel free to ask the owner for more details and non-profit discounts.

Huge house with a nice kitchen. Lots of room for friends and family. Furniture is largely old and weak (but they are authentic antiques!) Like staying in a museum.

Night at the Museum
We have stayed in many vacation rentals, but this is the best of the best! We never got tired of seeing all the wonderful artifacts in this house, trying out the local barbeque, pizza, and seeing local attractions. We stayed 5 days and never got tired of it. Also, there were so many conveniences, we felt like honored guests here. Thank you.

Multi-Generational Family Reunion
The thing we loved most about this house was having three generations of family together. We were in town for a family reunion and having all of us together in one home meant coffee together in the mornings and conversations into the evenings. The house is beautiful and I felt like we stepped back in time, yet, at the same time, had modern conveniences like the refrigerator and the coffee maker, etc. it’s located close to the cute downtown area of Russellville. Thanks to the owners for allowing us into your home!

This was a Girl's Trip and the house was perfect! We loved wandering through the house and enjoying the sense of long ago. We were all wishing we had dresses of the era to wear. The house was very roomy and we were able to come together in one room to eat our meals or to visit. With plenty of space for little ones to play (inside and out). An excellent place for large families. The kitchen had everything we needed and more. And there were plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms. We are all looking forward to visiting again.

Wonderful Home!
This home and the owners are WONDERFUL!!!! We spent 5 days at Christmas and had the best time. The house is absolutely stunning and so well furnished/decorated. We ate out and cooked in. We had everything we needed and more! We walked around the adorable town and saw where Jesse James robbed the bank! We also took the tour at Lost River Cave and enjoyed that also. Lots of cute shops downtown and plenty of places to eat! One of our most enjoyable vacations!! Thank you so much Tim and Diane for sharing your beautiful and interesting home!

Wonderful historical house
Hated to leave this amazing house even after a month. I do a lot of vacation rentals and this is now number one on my list of old homes. You feel as though you are living 200 years ago. Loved the 12 feet high floor to ceiling windows in large rooms. Clean and well stocked surrounded by magnificent old mansions in a quaint civil war town. Tim Diane and Edith were always available and so very nice. Hope to come again next year.

The Perfect Knitters Retreat Location
I thoroughly enjoyed my knitters retreat weekend. The home has been beautifully restored with period charm, yet has all the essential modern conveniences anyone could really want. It was a cozy place to sit and knit with friends. I felt very comfortable as if it were my own home. Russellville is an amazing place to visit if you love history and period architecture. Despite the cold rainy weather I was able to see several of the preserved historical sites. The Saddle Factory is not to be missed! I especially enjoyed the Civil War history of the area - a special interest of mine. Not only did I investigate the impact of the war on the town, but I visited two nearby National Battlefields (Fort Donelson, Stones River) during my travel to and from Russellville. I do regret not having enough time to read a few of the many of the Civil War books in Tim's library! There is truly something for everyone staying here. I hope I get to return sometime soon.

Had a wonderful time!!!
There were 10 of us ladies that came from around Jackson, Tenn, to get together for a few days and scrapbook. We were met on arrival by Ms Freda, who showed us around and was also very helpful during the rest of our stay. There were more than bedrooms and lots of room for each of us to have our own workspace on the main floor. Everything is furnished-even down to the toilet paper! We cooked our breakfasts and lunch each day and went out at night. The town is very quaint and just like our house--from the Civil War era. Beautiful homes and and yet all the modern conveniences such as Walmart and McDonalds! Tim was sooooo very helpful in planning this trip. He always answered my emails back the same day. We have gone to other places other years, but I believe our ladies have finally found our scrapbook "home". Thanks again for being so helpful.

Amazing stay
We had a family gathering planned for Christmas but COVID changed the plans for several of the family. My wife & I ended up being the only ones in the house. The house is amazing. It’s like stepping back in time but has the necessary conveniences as well. The furniture & decorations are something to see. It’s like a museum. You could spend an entire day just looking at everything. There are some challenges from being a 150+ year old house but it’s definitely worth the experience. If you’re looking for a place to host a family get together definitely look at this property. It would be an experience for the entire family. One caution would be young kids. It’s full of amazing antiques & decorations. That is not necessarily a good combination with children. The owner & manager were both outstanding. They were very professional & worked quickly to resolve the few minor issues we had. BL: this is a great property for a truly remarkable experience. We give it 2 big thumbs up!

More than we ever expected!
First let me say that Tim was extremely accommodating to our family. He communicated every step of the way and squeezed our family in for the weekend. Our son was coming home from deployment and our grandchild was being baptized, so this was a very important weekend for us to be able to spend together as a family. Tim was supportive and caring and went above and beyond to help make this a memorable weekend. The house itself, was absolutely stunning! There was a history lesson in every room. Our family enjoyed the entire experience. The rooms were all beautifully decorated in period style. The kids loved the chess sets! Although, the house is historic, it did have all the modern niceties, especially in the kitchen! The kitchen was updated and had everything we needed. The stove was huge and allowed us to easily cook meals for 19 people. The 2 refrigerators provided plenty of space for our groceries. There were plenty of dishes and silverware, cooking utensils, etc.. The bedrooms were gorgeous and allowed plenty of sleeping space for our group of 14. The bedroom with the library was a favorite! The dining room was spacious and elegant. We enjoyed gathering there for meals and games. The bathrooms were soothing with large claw foot tubs and showers. Each bathroom was stocked with big, thirsty towels and washcloths, along with shampoo, conditioner, lotion, etc.. I felt very pampered! It was nice to have a washer and dryer in the house, too. Outside of the home provided some nice and convenient things, as well. There was plenty of parking in the driveway. The porch was a nice place to sit and enjoy the fall weather and to rock my grandchildren. The tree's that surrounded it were interesting and pretty in their Autumn dress. We enjoyed the town, too. It was quaint and we took several walks. There were plenty of shops, etc. within walking distance. It was nice to be within driving distance to a larger shopping center, too. Also, a short drive takes you to the beautiful rural countryside. The house manager was wonderful, too! She was friendly and helpful. She, too, went out of her way for us. I could go on, but space is limited : ) We will definitely go back! We are looking forward to returning for another stay. I would also like to say thank you for the support of our military!

Wow! What a fun stay!! Perfect for the whole family!!
Wow! I know I will not be able to say everything I want to about the home, there isn't enough time or space. : ) My son was getting married in Bowling Green, KY and we are from Iowa. I wanted to find a home large enough to accommodate family and close friends that were making the trip. I am so happy I found it in the Victorian Stagecoach Inn! It was an easy drive (less than 30 minutes from Bowling Green) and Russellville is an adorable town with so much history and beautiful homes. Tim is a wonderful host who made sure our stay was perfect. Even though he had a wedding himself to attend out of state, he was always in contact and responded quickly to any questions/concerns I had. He also provides a detailed history of the home and the town which was so cool and interesting - it helped us learn more about the house. The house. I know I will not be able to put into words how amazing the house is. Full of history, antiques, space, and location. There are two bedrooms downstairs (one was used by my 83 year old mother). There are also two full bathrooms down. There is a casual livingroom with a TV (which the kids hooked up their Xbox and hung out there) and the open kitchen was perfect for preparing food and still being part of the conversation being had in the livingroom. Off of the kitchen is a diningroom with a large table that we all sat at to play games at night. Then, there is a gorgeous entryway, full of beautiful antiques and then the parlor - wow! The parlor makes you feel as if you have stepped back into time. I could see sitting there in the winter with a fire going. I loved sitting in the rocking chair in front of the bay window. My husband and nephew played chess in the room. It was so peaceful to sit in there with all the history and (because the house is so large) we could not hear the kids playing their video games in the livingroom! Upstairs, there are 5 bedrooms, 3 are private and 2 are connected to 2 of the rooms and 2 bathrooms. Again, PLENTY of room for all of us! The decor upstairs was full of history as well!! I spent every morning sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee and rocking in a chair watching the sun come up. It was the perfect way to start my days! Lots of parking, too! Like I said, I cannot even begin to describe this home. All I can say is if you have the chance, you must try to stay here. It's not just a place to lay your head but you also get to learn quite a bit of history!

We used the property as a base to explore the areas around. It had the space to accommodate our group very comfortably, including with good a/c, and at a great price. We had no problems at all, though the house is older and has such features, alongside historical touches
