Our family of three had a wonderful stay at Seahorse. Everything is designed to make the experience relaxing and enjoyable. The owners recommended a driver, Andrew, to pick us up at the airport. He was right on time and took us to a supermarket near the airport, with no extra charge for the stop. When we got to the house, two things struck us right away: the friendly staff greeted us with cold wet towels so that we could cool off, and we took a glimpse of the view through the open front and patio doors – straight to the beach and the sea. It was spectacular.
The staff of three is unfailingly friendly and helpful. They are Chappie, the gardener, who is also responsible for the swimming pool; Abigail, the cook; and Andrea, the housekeeper. The owners went out of their way to obtain a highchair for our toddler, which made the stay more comfortable for her and for us – especially since we ate all our meals outdoors, on the covered patio, a short distance from the pool.
The house features three bedrooms with king-size beds and en-suite bathrooms, which is very helpful for multiple couples. The bedrooms all have high ceilings, ceiling fans, and air conditioning. The living room and patio have ceiling fans.
It is clear that much thought went into the décor, with various items reflecting Jamaican culture, nautical themes, and seahorses. Abigail gave us different placemats and table linens for each of our meals. (Because we have special dietary needs, she did not do as much cooking as she usually does, but she did help with salad preparation and shared a Key Lime Pie recipe that we are eager to try.) Andrea changed the sheets and towels regularly and kept the house spotless. In addition to his normal duties, which begin early in the morning and conclude with his closing up the house at night, Chappie built a bonfire on the beach one evening and picked fresh mangoes off a tree in the garden. Thanks to the help of the staff, we felt like we were not sacrificing the service in a good hotel, but we had extra living space, plus a short stroll to a private pool and a private beach (in a home that is part of a gated community). Indeed, it’s hard to imagine accommodations that would bring a visitor closer to the waterfront than we were.
We would offer a small caveat for data-intensive visitors: Internet service is catch-as-catch-can. If you want to relax in a tranquil setting, however, it would be difficult to do better.
