Sightseeing
The villa is minutes away from the centre of Koskinou, a delightful Rhodian village which, despite rapid tourist development on Rhodes island, has managed to maintain its own character. The village combines old and new, boasts some very good local tavernas and is known for its hospitable and welcoming inhabitants.
Rhodes town is also 5kms away, minutes by car. This busy cosmopolitan centre also combines old and new, and boasts a unique Palia Poli, or Old Town, which is designated a UNESCO historical site. The walled Old Town, with its paved and cobbled streets, boasts a plethora of restaurants and tavernas, shops and bars. This monument is a living Old town, with more than 2,500 local inhabitants. Cars are not permitted in the Old Town but what better way to take in its atmosphere and charm than a stroll along its lanes? Besides its seemingly endless tourist services and facilities, the Old Town also has an amazing Palace of the Grand Master, harking back to the days of the Knights of St John; a world-class archaeological museum; one of Europe’s oldest Jewish synagogues; mosques, Byzantine churches and many more historical monuments. You walk and breathe history in the Palia Poli.
The Old Town, however, also has a very lively nightlife and a different charm in the evening light.
Rhodes town is, however, not just the Old Town. ‘Downtown’ Rhodes is a busy commercial centre with shops to match those of any major European centre. Mandrake harbour hosts pleasure and day trip boats to suit all tastes and pockets and the town’s beaches are, like all those on Rhodes island, lucky to have sparkling clear water.
Just 2.5kms from Rodos Paradise Villa lies the outstanding Kalithea spa, an area developed in the 1920’s when wealthy Europeans and travellers from the Middle East sought out its natural spring waters. Restoration work on the original spa buildings and the surrounding areas has Kalithea rated as one of Rhodes’ top attractions. It’s a stunning area, great for swimming, sunbathing, diving and perfect for an evening cocktail. It is also a popular venue for weddings.
Close by (3kms from Rodos Paradise Villa) is the island’s largest resort, Faliraki with a staggering range of hotels, facilities and services for holidaymakers.
The east coast road, which is easily accessible from Rodos Paradise Villa, leads on to Afandou (13 kms) and the island’s golf course. Then, on to another major resort, Kolimbia. Inland the Seven Springs valley is well worth a visit.
Back on the coastal road there are numerous towns and coastal resorts en route to what is considered the ‘jewel’ of Rhodes island, the town of Lindos.
Lindos is 35kms from Rodos Paradise Villa. It’s a stunning village, nestling under the Lindos acropolis which is one of Greece’s oldest. It’s a favourite of most visitors to the island and it’s easy to see why! Lindos is a town of whitewashed houses and tiny paved lanes. Cars are not allowed; Lindos streets are ruled by its local ‘taxi’, donkeys which weave their way through the town up to the acropolis. Lindos offers a wide range of shops, restaurants, tavernas and bars; its sandy beach is rarely empty!
A trip up to the acropolis is recommended.
The road along the east coast continues, through more resorts and small towns, to lead to Prasonissi at the very tip of the island.
The Western side of the island is also easily accessible from Rodos Paradise Villa and offers another array of sightseeing possibilities including: Philermos, the unique Valley of the Butterflies; Ancient Kamiros; ruins of castles and fortresses and many towns and villages, each with its own character and atmosphere.
