A Hidden River House Private setting Big Sky Views Walk to a hidden River

Mesa - In the middle of it all - 4 miles south of Blueberry Hill - 2 miles north of Taos Country Club (open to the public) 6 miles to Taos village, 18 miles to Taos Ski Valley

“A Hidden River House”, nestled with 4 neighboring homes on the open mesa, is a semi-secluded respite providing 365 degree mountain / mesa views. Each home is strategically situated, affording residents a total sense of quiet serenity and visual privacy.

Two very separate patios offer a varied choice of awe inspiring north or south mountain views. You will experience the rich southwest sun rise and sun set “light shows” so loved and made famous by world renowned artist Georgia O’Keefe.

The large central kitchen, fully equipped with upscale tableware and cookware, comes complete with dishwasher, oven/range, microwave, large fridge and an abundance of counter space. A breakfast bar for two adds dining space or computer work space. Walk out the sliding glass doors for “alfresco dining” on the north patio.

Enjoy 180 degree panoramic views from the light, bright and airy great room with three walls of windows and glass doors. A kiva fireplace adds traditional southwest charm and comes equipped with firewood for romantic fireside dining and cozy evenings of satellite flat screen TV enjoyment.

The two bedrooms are buffered by a full bathroom, creating a total sound barrier between them. The large king master bedroom, with sliding glass doors, walks out to the north patio and the queen guest bedroom is home to the ever important telescope. We promise, you will never forget the “starry starry nights” uninterrupted by city lights as viewed from A Hidden River House. Her dark skies are unparalleled!!

Located as central hub between the 4 major Taos attractions, daily travel is simplified in all directions. Taos Country Club (4 miles) and the newly declared Rio Grande del Norte National Monument (10 miles) are to the south. Taos Ski Valley (18 miles) head north and the quaint adobe village of Taos, New Mexico (6 miles).

If you are searching for quiet private serenity and a unique lodging experience, search no longer. A Hidden River House is waiting your arrival and assures you of lasting fond memories.

Please be advised during heavy snows a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive, or optional chains are necessary.

Beautiful Autumn Stay
We had a lovely time. It was our second time staying here. The first week we showed my nephew what we love about Taos, the next 3 weeks we worked remotely. The house is perfectly situated for views and wildlife (birds, hawks, an owl, a coyote were all seen). Highly recommend.

Beautiful house in great area but complicated for a long stay
We were there a month. By and large, we loved the house and loved the area. Their were so many of the owners' personal and decorative items that we had to move some to make room for our own things and to protect theirs. We had a couple of issues: The biggest was a kitchen cabinet door. We found it broken with dry glue on the broken part that showed that it had been glued before. There was also a bottle of wood glue in the house. We called the property manager to let him know and someone picked up the door for repair quickly. They insinuated that we broke it despite the dried glue. I called several times to confirm that we were not to be blamed but never got confirmation and we were nervous that we would be blamed for other old damage to the house. That made us a little uncomfortable. Other than that, the property manager was very responsive and helpful.

Location, location!
If you like privacy, and fantastic views & sunsets, then this is a property for you. We were here 6 nights, and our favorite part was the back patio, and enjoying the mountain views. The back yard ramada was very interesting, & creative. When we arrived, the house had not been cleaned properly, and I communicated with the local caretaker that evening. She returned my call the next morning, and she understood our disappointment. Floors were dirty, counter tops needed wiping, and the top of fridge very dusty. She took care of everything while we were out sightseeing. She apologized, and we felt satisfied. The house does need a good deep cleaning, but bed linens were clean, bathroom was clean too. The mattress in the master was comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked if you want to cook. We walked to the "hidden river" several times, very pretty setting. There is another ramada there overlooking the river, bring a picnic lunch, so peaceful. Suggestions for the owner - some plastic wine glasses for outside use. New pillows, all of the bed pillows were pretty wimpy, and thin. Also, the kitchen patio screen door is awful to open and close, it's a struggle every time.

Not As Described-Part 1
We did not have a good experience. Would not recommend this house, or location. Left early and found a better location to stay at. When we arrived at the house the wind was hollowing. There were significant wind gusts. Once we found the key for the house, location was not given to us, we unlocked the door. The wind was blowing so hard that I hung onto the door so it would not slam open. Before we even stepped into the house there was a crash. As we got in the door, we saw that a figurine had been blown over that was in the nitch in wall across from door. When it blew over it created another one to crash to floor. We had to locate a broom and dustpan and get the rug picked up, so our dogs did not get cut by anything. We immediately took all the other figurines out of the nitch and placed on table so no other ones would be broken. I reported this to the individual that answered the phone for caretaker contact. He made the comment that it had been very windy. Our issue with this is we are being charged for something that broke and was completely out of our control. Noone was doing anything crazy; we had not even stepped foot in the house yet. As we started to settle in and look around the house, we noticed that the outside areas were nothing like pictured on the VRBO site. In the pictures on VRBO it shows a nice sitting area labeled side yard. The vegetation is so overgrown that we were not able to access this area. The side yard looks nothing at all like the pictures posted due to the overgrown vegetation. In the pictures on VRBO it also shows a nice patio area for sitting at a table, with cushions. Again, the vegetation is so overgrown that we had to maneuver the chairs around have any room. we also looked around for cushions for the chairs and were unable to find any. It was a tight fit down the path to gathering location due to the vegetation as well. The pictures for outdoor space are very misleading. My husband and I attempted showers and discovered we had no hot water. The hot water heater did not appear to be working. I did notify the number for caretaker and the gentleman did offer to come over and take a look. We were tired and ready to settle in. I told him we would touch base the next morning.

Pretty nice
The location was very nice, but very close to neighbors. The dogs came right to use once barking at my kids. The kitchen was really great. The only trouble was that 2 nights of our stay the roof leaked in multiple locations directly over the master bed. The last night we were unable to sleep in the bed because of it. The other thing was broken pottery and overgrown sage/plants in the walkway of the patio/courtyard. It would be nice to have that trimmed up and cleaned up for a family friendly property. The house though, it was beautifully arranged and supplied. Minus theses things, especially the roof leaks, it would have been wonderful.

A Bit of Paradise
My spouse and I had a magical time. We stayed for a month in autumn, were working remotely, and occasionally went into town (but we didn’t really do that many touristy things). Many things were truly wonderful: - the views are incredible, we couldn’t get enough of the sunrises or sunsets - we loved the bird feeders and became amateur bird watchers during the month - the kiva fireplace was really lovely and we enjoyed many nights in front of the fire - the charcoal grill was well maintained and ready to use - we didn’t use the ramada much, but it’s so lovely with the fire pit and large table, and would be great for groups that are bigger (we were only 2) - Sondra, the house manager, was very responsive and helpful - the care and placement of the outdoor seating areas is perfect, there are different places from which to see different mountain ranges, it’s so stunningly beautiful Some challenges (there weren’t many, but...) - in the fall, spiders and ants will try and get indoors, it’s just part of being in this area, and we had a lot of (harmless) grass spiders that are startling to us (from the northeast) because of their size, which is about 1+ inch. the owner was very kind and offered to call someone to deal with it, but we opted to catch & release instead. again, they were harmless but startling. - the previous tenants/renters had left a good deal of dog hair where it shouldn’t have been, but once I told Sondra, she and the owners were very quick to apologize and rectify the situation. - the coffee maker wasn’t working (we ended up getting a pour over and like it even better than the drip maker and so we’re not unhappy about this) Overall, there are always things that are unforeseen, but we felt we were in very good hands, and all our requests were responded to quickly. And hands down, it’s one of the most beautiful properties we’ve ever rented. The various outdoor spaces where you can sit and watch the birds, the sun, the sky, and listen to the wind — they’ve done a remarkable job seeing these spaces up. They’re perfect. We saw so many birds, and a number of coyotes and hawks, too. We would love to come back and rent this place again. It was wonderful.

The perfect nature getaway
We would return here in a heartbeat. A beautiful and comfortable adobe house in the sagebrush was a perfect change of scenery. We saw the Milky Way and several shooting stars; a flock of quail and countless other birds; and (at a safe distance) a group of coyotes with pups—all from just outside the house. We loved being in nature but still just a short drive from town. Our toddler is still talking about all we saw at “our New Mexico house.”

Wonderful getaway from Summer heat and COVID!
We thoroughly enjoyed our week at the Hidden River House. We planned the week as a change of scenery and break from the hot weather in southern NM. We have been to Taos many times and have seen most all of the sights, so this week was booked with the intention of enjoying the house and immediate area. We were not disappointed. The house litself is beautifully decorated and had a very well appointed kitchen that allowed us to cook wonderful meals at home when indoor seating at restaurants was prohibited due to COVID. We loved all the many outdoor spaces around the house for drinking coffee in the morning, an afternoon cocktail at the private Ramada, and dining on the back patio. We also walked our dogs all around the larger property surrounding the home, including seeing the massive big and pronghorn sheep down by the hidden river. Also chatted with a couple of friendly neighbors while here. We could not have scripted a better week away!
