Further notes on Walnut Manor (and recommendations on places to visit):
1. Woodstove (seasonally): the woodstove is a Stüv and uses a very primitive system. The "key" to the door is a long flat silver mechanism hanging on the wood stove tool caddy (please always return it here).
Simply hook the bolt opening onto the bolt at the top right of the door and swing left to open (right to close).
Load the Stüv with tightly crumbled newsprint, kindling and some smaller pieces of dry wood. Light the newsprint with a long Bic lighter (found in a kitchen drawer -- closest to the living room on the west side of the house).
Leave the door slightly ajar until the firewood has properly ignited and then close the Stüv door fully using the key (swing to the right once the hook touches the stove proper). If you open the door too far when getting the fire going, you will smoke up the house!
Opening and closing the door takes a little practice so you might want to try ahead of lighting the fire just to be sure you are proficient. If you have problems, please text the host.
If you run out of firewood, let the host know and she will come by at your convenience to fill up the woodboxes.
Note: the birch logs under the stove is decorative. Please do not burn them!
2. AGA cookstove companion: The AGA is a 24" dual fuel oven/stove (electric/propane). To use the cooktop, push the corresponding knob down and to the left -- to the large flame icon. Once the element ignites, release and adjust the flame by turning further left.
There are two ovens in the unit. The bottom unit is a convection oven and cooks a little faster than a normal oven. Set for baking at 25 C lower than you might ordinarily.
The top oven is a normal electric oven with a grill function.
The grill is the third button from the right. You can use half the grill or the whole grill depending on which way you turn the knob. Please leave the door slightly ajar if you use the grill as it can overheat and damage the elements in the oven.
3. Webber BBQ: use as you would any BBQ. This unit is self igniting.
4. Samsung Heatpumps: There are 4 heat pumps in Walnut Manor for your comfort in any weather. Each heat pump has the capacity to heat, cool, and circulate air (fan). The units have separate thermostats, which also function as remote controls. These can be found in each of the bedrooms and (for the main floor unit) in the living room on the casing of the north window. Please put the thermostats back in their holders (the thermostats work best from these placements).
Heatpumps do not turn on and off instantly, and when you adjust the temperature, it can take a few minutes for the unit to respond. It is best not to push more than one button in succession as the poor things get confused. If you are unsure of how to manage the units, please contact the host (the host has the capacity to change the temperature settings remotely).
If you are leaving for the day, please adjust the thermostats for the least environmental impact (down in the winter, up in the summer)
5. You may NOT have an outdoor fire at Walnut Manor, owing to the proximity of the wooden barn. Fires are not permitted in PEC without called-in permits.
6. For guests with dogs: Please clean up after your pet in the yard. There is a poop scooper and an aluminum bucket for dog feces in the yard.
7. Walnut Manor runs on a delicate septic system (like most rural properties). Do not put anything besides toilet paper in the toilets.
8. Drinking Water: the water at Walnut Manor is drinkable. It is city water (chlorinated). For reverse osmosis water, use the jug in the fridge door. Be sure to replace it as it refills automatically.
9. Walnut Manor has only a crawl space basement and therefore very limited space for infrastructure. The water heater is relatively small and so you might need to wait for hot water between showers (we have never had this problem but it could happen).
10. Walnut Manor has a steam shower unit in the upstairs shower. Simply push "on" and set the temperature you prefer. When you are finished your steam or your regular shower, please leave the shower door OPEN so that the shower unit can dry out. Otherwise, mold will build up in the shower. The Steamist steam unit is VERY PLEASANT after a run or a bike in the county. :)
11. Towels: extra towels can be found in the middle bedroom dresser.
12. Before you leave, please remove all food that you brought, and all garbage/recycling that you accumulated. A charge of $100 minimum will be levied to your stay if you leave garbage behind.
13. You can text or call Kathryn at (416) 436-1150
