Location:
Porec is the premier holiday destination in Istria and consistently earns accolades from the Croatian National Tourist Office as the top resort in Croatia. With over 100,000 beds available in the area, you'll find ample accommodation options, yet the spread-out hotels and facilities ensure that Porec never feels overcrowded. The primary tourist hubs are the Zelena (Green) and Plava (Blue) Laguna (lagoon) bays to the south of the town. These areas are akin to small towns themselves, boasting multiple hotels, camping facilities, a marina, and vibrant shopping and entertainment districts. Most visitors opt for accommodations in one of these two areas. If you find yourself in the town center and yearn for some sun and swimming, you can take a short boat ride to Sveti Nikola island, just a few minutes away. Porec's rich history invites exploration, and the old town is a must-visit, replete with numerous historical sites. The Euphrasian Basilica, dating back to the 6th century, is exceptionally well-preserved and renowned for its exquisite gold mosaics. The Basilica comprises several buildings, including a baptistry and the Bishop's Palace, and has earned UNESCO World Heritage status since 1997. Porec's main street, the Decumanus, runs through the center of the old town, retracing its roots to prehistoric and Roman times. Marafor Square (Trg Marafor) stands on the site of an ancient Roman forum and still reveals remnants of two temples dedicated to Neptune and Mars. North of Marafor Square, you'll find the Parliament Buildings, once the Istrian regional parliament, now repurposed as a museum. These structures originated from a 13th and 14th-century Franciscan church.
