Phippsburg, Maine is a beautiful place, and we had a wonderful week there. There are 3 beaches near the property and you can kayak all around the bay. However it's important to read the fine print and be aware that this cottage is half a house, and you will be sharing the decks with your neighbors. You can hear everything they say, and vice versa. And the neighboring houses are very close, measured in feet, not yards. If privacy is important to you, then this is not the property for you.
Bill the caretaker lives next door and he was very responsive, but there were a few things that made the house less than charming. For one, you can't drink the water. They use a reverse osmosis process to supply water straight from the ocean, and it tastes like old seashells. Bring plenty of bottled water. For another, they have a commercial faucet in the kitchen (you have to be squeezing the handle to turn it on) which makes it impossible to do the dishes unless you have a third hand. This may sound petty, but we were preparing our own meals and doing lots of dishes, and this got really annoying really fast. And, you get soaked in the process. Other minor things were that one of the toilets was plugged when we got there, the DVD player didn't work, the screen door to the deck wouldn't stay on track (we finally removed it) and one of the stove burners didn't work. For the price, I felt the property should have been better maintained.
