There was a major incident in central Amsterdam the day we travelled and we had some trouble getting to the hotel as there were no trams. We were stressed, tired and hungry were given an unexpected bill and not shown to our room. There was a 'Burlesque' book in the room to look at, which was strange with a teenager. The lobby is small, and we were restricted to the bar lounge for dinner with a limited menu of average quality. But the high ceilings and ornate finishes are the perfect antidote if you have had enough of cool, minimalist contemporary establishments.
