Gorgeous Bohemian village retreat in fabulous spot one one hour from Marrakech

On the edge of the Toubkal National Park, a gorgeous restored, ecological and super stylish 19th Century Berber house in its own lovely plant filled garden, at the end of a private path - private yet not at all remote and only one hour from Marrakech!

A very rare opportunity to experience rural life in very comfortable surroundings.

A short stroll will plunge you in fields and on rural paths, where a centuries old life style still carries on. The views as you wander further up the village are stunning. Groves of almond, olive and pomegranate are present with blossom and scent filling the air for a significant period of the year.

A perfect base to explore the region, where history and nature combine to enrich your trip, or to simply relax.

FOOD AND DINING:

Half board (breakfast and one other meal) is available as room service. 150 Dh per person per day (Children aged 7-12 100 Dh). Delicious Berber and Moroccan food using mostly home grown organic ingredients.

Well equipped kitchen for your cooking needs.

Food is also available locally in hotel restaurants, as well a bar at La Roseraie, a luxury hotel and a wonderful place to have an aperitif in the afternoon and make the most of its stunning setting. It is approximately 5 minutes walk away.

EXPLORING ON FOOT:

An excellent guide is available there at short notice, the cost for this guide is 100 Dh per hour with a minimum of two hours. Mules can also be hired.

Swimming is usually available in hotel pools nearby, for a charge or if you have lunch depending on the establishment.

General Information : Marrakech Airport 37 miles (1 hour by taxi). Taxis can be arranged in advance for 600 Dh one way. This is much cheaper than at the airport. Car hire is available at the airport. The journey is for the most part spectacular as you head southwards towards the Atlas and then wind your way up to Ouirgane, which lies at 1000 metres above sea level. Private taxis can easily be arranged in house to go to Marrakech, for day trips in the region or elsewhere.

Asni 8 miles. Marigha 2 miles. Marrakech 40 miles. Tin Mal mosque (1 hour). Taroudant (4 hours) through the Tizn Test mountain pass, the highest in Morocco. Stunning scenery all the way!

Day trips can be arranged in house to all these locations and many more, including Oukaimeden. Treks can also be arranged as well, as and when.

Food and Dining: Well equipped kitchen for your cooking needs. Meals are available in local cafes and restaurants, also a bar at La Roseraie, a luxury hotel that is five minutes away on foot, a wonderful place to have an aperitif in the afternoon and make the most of its stunning setting.

More developed amenities and banks are available in Asni or Tahanaoute, both within a half hour drive. Asni, the main village in the area, leads to Imlil, which lies at the end of a stunning road, which also passes Richard Branson's luxurious Kasbah Tamadot, the drive is stunning.

Climate in Ouirgane: The climate in Ouirgane is ideal from early spring to late autumn. The Summers are much more gentle than in Marrakech and the plains, and although it can get hot in July and August, it is rare for it to become uncomfortable. The Winters are gentle in the day when the sun is shining but can be cold in the mornings and evening. In December and January the nights can be very cold. There are electric radiators in the main rooms to fight the winter. It must be noted that due to the Moroccan design of houses there is an internal courtyard that is open to the sky and therefore the heating is not like in centrally heated properties In the UK and Europe. If you are adverse to some chill then December and January are best avoided although the house is still very cosy.

The night skies can be stunning, with very little light pollution. Shooting stars are a regular occurrence!

The house is perfect for those who want to experience a different side to Morocco without being isolated while staying in a fully refurbished Berber house with exceptional style, and for those who love to wander in nature and admire a centuries old social and agricultural landscape. It is an ideal base to explore the varied surroundings and to combine it with a stay in Marrakech.

friendly village, well equipped house, helpful hosts, beautiful area
We stayed at the house early in the new year, which is a very cold time in the mountains. Between the houses electric heaters and a well supplied fire, loads of bedding and several hours of sunshine a day on the roof, we did ok and were warm enough to enjoy the evenings inside. The hot water was not working brilliantly but the hosting neighbours brought us a big kettle to make water hot on the gas. The olive harvest was in full swing in the village & oil being pressed by mule locally every day. There are many beautiful walks nearby. The one thing I might mention is that the house does not receive much sunshine (maybe a good thing in summer!) & you can hear the road (not a big problem). The house was beautifully clean and the kitchen well equipped. Thank you.

Danke!

The property was clean and colourful and exactly as portrayed on website. Ideal for our needs.
We enjoyed Ouirgane and the situation . It is ideal having a bit of private garden around the house. We used the roof most of the time in the day, as it was warm and sunny and the trees full of birdsong. It was however cold at night , to be expected in March. We did have to use the electric radiators. Mohammed and Rashid were delightful hosts as were the rest of the family. We enjoyed several home cooked evening meals and a breakfast. We were also provided with fresh milk, oranges and nuts as an extra! We went on an excursion with Rashid to local hilltop village where we were treated to local tagine in villager's house. Another day we were driven by Mohammed to the famous Tin Mal temple and the spectacular Tizi n' Test pass that crosses the Atlas and connects to Taroudant. We highly recommend the local Souk on a Thursday, and a visit to the local blacksmith who only works on a Thursday when all the mules/donkeys arrive in the village for the Souk. All in all a very relaxing week with brilliant weather and friendly hospitality.

Perfect retreat space
We loved this little home... simple and private...the scent of orange blossom...the full moon on the rooftop at night...Mohammed and his care, bees, sweet honey and smiles...the surrounding nature full of winding pathways, waving barley and poppy fields, of olive tree orchards, splashing mountain streams, and terracotta Berber villages. We will be returning very soon!

Maison Shayne, a real gem in the high atlas mountains
We spent 10 days at ‘Maison Shayne’ and we could have stayed longer. The house is lovely and the neighbours are very friendly and welcoming. The whole setting is an excellent way to experience real rural Moroccan village life from your own private sanctuary. The house is a traditional Berber farmhouse renovated with a lot of taste and style and very well maintained. Mohammed and his family help, cook and arrange trips if wanted, but there is no obligation and in general they keep a friendly distance. During our stay, we explored the mountains and villages of the high atlas, we went on guided (guide Abdul is highly recommended) and unguided hikes, we went swimming in the nearby hotel pools, we visited markets (the one in Amizmiz is very original with hardly any other tourists), hung out in the pink patio, read, played games, cooked delicious meals, painted and drew: we had a great holiday. Even our two teenage boys enjoyed it (no WIFI in the house ;-)

A total gem
When we were searching for holiday accomodation in the area of Marrakech we kept finding ourselves returning to the prospect of the private and shaded gardens featured at Maison Shayne. We wondered if the location might be limiting but so glad we took the chance. Perfectly in between many options of things to do and ideally located for the days doing nothing at all or exploring local life, the olive groves or surrounds. Mohammed and his family looked after us splendidly with fresh local produce, superbly prepared. We chose not to hire a car but instead were able to enjoy the experience as passengers and take in the views. Maison Shayne has a wonderful character and everything we needed to immerse ourselves in our first visit to Morocco. We arrived as guests and left feeling very much as if we were leaving new friends behind.

Zing!
Peter's house lies below the olive groves in Ouirgane. 4 of us stayed here in early February. A great time to be in the Atlas, warm walks in the day - up through the almond trees, rivers, and higher! The neighbour Mohammad and his wife Khadija who cooks the finest tagines. He is lovely, would come and light our fire in the evenings. The house is really comfortable and very private. The layout is great, and the colours - its like being in a painting. It's right next to the Rosaire hotel for wine, internet access and horses. Great riding across the salt flats and onwards. Really recommend a visit at this time of year, very special spot!

Best Trip Ever!
An absolutely amazing location with beautiful views! Mohammed the manager and his wife were the most helpful and accommodating people we have ever met taking care of our every need and making us feel completely at home. The location has amazing mountain views and close to many spectacular views, markets and amenities. We loved it so much we will be booking again this year! Car most certainly recommended in order to make the most out of your trip.

1 week in Wirgane
Beautiful house set just below the olive groves. Rooms set up round the courtyard with a bright flat roof terrace that overlooks the dam. Afternoons spent walking through the trees; red soil with cacti leading up to almond trees and rivers, onto scrub and up to snow. Hotel Rosarie is nearby, great for riding, take a barb horse across the salt flats. We were well looked after by Muhammad and family, delicious cooking. Highly recommended!

Wonderful house in beautiful setting
We stayed in this wonderful house for a week and enjoyed it immensely. It was very difficult to leave as we could have easily stayed on longer! The charming mud brick house was very comfortable with everything we required provided for us. The house was immaculately kept, clean and colourful. A roof top terrace afforded views of the lake and mountains as well as a peaceful spot for sun lounging and reading. There are two swimming pools nearby where you can also dine so we definitely took took advantage of them! One had stunning views of the mountains and the other had beautiful gardens as well as views. The house itself has a lush garden where we often ate breakfast or had tea and homemade biscuits. The food provided was excellent and served by the friendly neighbour who also has a vast amount of knowledge about the local area. He arranged a few day trips for us to see local sights and views. The area is truly stunning and unlike anything I had seen before. We will definitely be making a return visit!

What an enchanting place to stay
An enchanting setting, a lovely Berber house in its generous well stocked garden, with many terraces to choose from. Situated at the end of a rustic path, there is the distinct feeling you are traveling back in time, very charming indeed. The accommodation is very comfy and we were so looked after by Mohamed and his family, who cooked us delicious Berber dishes, wonderful tagines and couscous. There are numerous paths to go walking, and since we had a car we did a great deal of sightseeing, the landscapes all around and further afield are magnificent. We hope to visit again in springtime in the not too distant future and just relax in the house, with the odd day trip to Marrakech. Amazing value too, Peter's prices are really too reasonable in our opinion.

Characterful village property
Enjoyed our stay, interesting village, lovely peaceful garden, and we enjoyed being near the mountains. The house itself is full of character with a fine open central courtyard. The kitchen and bathroom are basic, but the house met our needs and Mohamed and his family are friendly and hospitable.

Perfect !
My two friends and I had a fantastic stay in Peters house in Ouirgane. It is a traditional Berber house in a traditional Berber village and is completely off the tourist track. It is not luxurious and I wouldnt advise doing a lot of cooking but it is really charming. We stayed in February and, even though the weather was cold, were really comfortable. Peters neighbour Mohammed lit us a roaring fire in the evenings and his wife Khadisha cooked us delicious tagines at ridiculously cheap prices. We didn't hire a car and there was plenty to explore nearby. We also made use of The Hotel La Roserie which has a swimming pool and wifi and is only a 2 minute walk away.Everyone in the village was friendly and helpful. There were more than 5 terraces at the house and there was always one terrace in the sunshine. As a complete change from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech I cannot recommend this highly enough.

This place is magical
We were looking forward to our stay in Ouirgane - we imagined it would be a nice but we were completely unprepared to be blown away. The photos posted here, though lovely enough to entice us to this village house, do not do the house justice. It is, in a word, stunning. In a few more words, it's also magical, beautiful, charming, relaxing and above all, comfortable. Our family of five had plenty of space to enjoy ourselves - from the rooftop terrace to the garden and the gorgeous inner courtyard - that we hardly had any desire to venture out, though we did make an exception to go out for a mule ride around the village, which was a real highlight. Peter, the owner, was very responsive to any questions we had and arranged for us a driver to take us from Marrakech airport to the house. Mohammed, the next-door neighbour and house manager was available for any requests and his wife Khadija is a fantastic cook (we highly recommend having her cook all your meals - she prepares them at her house and then delivers them to you). We really did have such a good time and hope to return.

So glad we stayed here not Marrakech!
Peter Shayne's Ouirgane hideaway is the perfect base from which to explore both the High Atlas and Marrakech. With two comfy double bedrooms, a cosy sitting room for the evenings and the secluded roof terrace for breakfast and afternoon sunbathing it had everything we needed. It is tucked away within a complex of traditional Morroccan houses, but only a few yards from the parking. In the evening it is perfectly quiet with a wonderful view of the starry African skies from the courtyard. The kitchen is fairly basic, with only a gas hob, but that is fine, because another of this house's secrets is the neighbours. Mohammed and Khadija, who are not only wonderfully friendly and helpful, but also provide delicious breakfasts and evening meals. We loved the local walks, the drive to TIn Mal, the day trip to Marrakech, the big walk in the Toubkal national park, the apero at the posh 'Domaine', the dinner at 'le Sanglier', and finally, just feeling smug that we were not stuck in the big city.

Wonderful...
Had a really wonderful time staying here. Incredibly authentic experience away from the craziness that is Marrakech. Beautiful countryside, stunning walks and views. The more adventurous can trek up a nearby mountain. Alternatively get a quick cheap taxi to a near-by swimming pool and restaurant. The meals provided by the Berber family next door were really something special... and everything was ridiculously good value. Arranging taxi transfers from Marrakech was easy and cheap (and the cab journey was spectacular in itself). You don't really need a car when you're there. Fell in love with this house and the area. Highly recommended! Steve
