Oostburg, WI, house on Lake Michigan

This rustic and charming 3 bedroom cottage has been in our family for over 100 years. It can sleep 7 adults plus we have 2 cots that can be pulled out for kids. The cottage is nestled in the woods on the shore of Lake Michigan near Oostburg, Wisconsin. Our wonderful Sweetbriar creek is out our back door with beautiful Lake Michigan out the front door.
This cottage is a joy to be at during the warmer months of spring and summer, But is also is a cozy peaceful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of our increasingly hectic modern world in the early and late fall months.

(IMPORTANT information... Please bare with us as the beach is constantly changing in size and in the last 3 years the Lake levels have been relatively high.
Luckily the sand is coming back and filling in.

* Update April 2024 there is beach for walking and swimming, playing. The beach is coming back and we had some of our stone waterbreak filled in with sand to construct more beach. Inside our cottage there is ample room for cooking, baking, and dining together. There are games, tables, nooks for reading, a wood burning fireplace in the living room and a sunny sitting room facing the lake. Also we offer wireless internet and an HD flat screen TV. for local channels and for your streaming plus a cottage phone line.
The deck looks out over the lake and In the morning our sunbathed deck provides a wonderful place to sit, read, visit and sip morning coffee. (We provide a table umbrella and sand Beach umbrellas. (also available beach towels and some hats. This deck becomes shaded in the mid afternoon as the sun drops behind the White Pines providing relief from the late afternoon heat.

As evening comes on, building an outdoor fire, enjoying dinner around the fire ring or on the deck provide a fitting finale to the day.

Particular activities for this natural area include taking a beach walk or a bike ride in the wooded one lane shaded road that parallels the meandering creek. You can admire the natural boreal forest with its Canadian Hemlock, Sugar Maples, Beech trees, and native ferns.

Well behaved dogs are always welcome.

Close by are an abundance of activities including- the Kohler art museum, state parks, bike paths and quaint little towns.

For more places to visit, walk, and swim at a Beach you can take a quick drive north to Kohler Andrea State Park (North)Beach. It is a 5 minute drive ! Approximately 4 miles away. Very fun to walk, collect beach stones and drift wood, picnic and swim, dogs are allowed in certain places on a leash. There is also a visitor center for kids and Adults to enjoy. Entry is 3.00 / day pass. ( It is a State Park so fees apply but if you already have a yearly sticker you are all set. (and if you choose, there is plenty of room at the park to social distance and to enjoy the beach safely.) You might also look into Amsterdam State Park or Sheboygan City Beach.
Sheboygan also has a wonderful Library and Children's museum to visit. )

We hope that you enjoy your time at our cottage as much as we do.

Thank you and We hope that you will stay with us. Thank you for looking.

Relaxing
I didn’t leave for 4 days except to take long walks with my dog. It was very relaxing and so quiet. This is the fourth year that my dog and I have been here and we will be back again next year! So nice to have a lot of beach to walk on.

Very cozy, lovely beach, we had a great week!
This cabin is a true gem. It has clearly been loved for generations and it was so nice to spend a week here with my family. The beach is perfection, tons of nice sand and the water is shallow and clear. We heard waves every night throughout the cabin. The kitchen is better stocked than most VRBOs and using the Revere Ware and well-seasoned cast iron pans was a fun cooking treat! The queen bed was comfortable and I usually struggle with rental beds. The twin beds seemed a bit too bouncy for my taste, but I never tried sleeping on them myself. Our 8 and 10 year olds had no complaints. The game room is stocked with so many fun items for young and old and the beachside fire pit is great for the evenings. There were a small amount of beach toys (we brought many of our own to supplement) and during our stay there were 2 umbrellas and 3 or 4 plastic adirondack chairs that are easily carried down to the beach and water. There is a charcoal grill that is on its last legs - might need to be replaced for the 2025 season. We would love to come back!

A Hidden Gem
We had a wonderful time spending the end of summer at this hidden gem. Our boys thoroughly enjoyed the extra toys in the back room and children's books. We loved sleeping to the sounds of the lake waves. Thank you for sharing your family's cottage with us!

Best way to end the summer
Coming to the oostburg area on Lake Michigan with my kids has been how we kick off the end of the summer/beginning of school and getting in some grandparent time. This year we stayed at the Byrns‘ Cottage and it did not disappoint. The cottage is full of decades of memories and history that make it feel like home, not a sterile rental property. Plenty of windows for the lake breeze to blow through and keep the house cool. We enjoyed playing games and putting puzzles together. The kitchen is fully stocked and ready for you to whip up anything your heart desires. Comfy beds and plenty of space. Giant ferns in the front are absolutely gorgeous. We got to see baby birds fledge from a nest built in one of the white cedar trees. I loved perusing the various vendor tents at the farmer‘s market in nearby Sheboygan as well as hopping over to the children’s museum and exploring Kohler-Andrae state park. Of course a favorite part was playing in the sand and hopping the waves. We spent countless hours on the beach and in the water, and taking walks along the shoreline. We feel so blessed to have been welcomed into the Byrns‘ cottage and are already planning for next year‘s trip. Best two weeks of the year!

Family getaway
The cabin is great, the location wonderful, quiet, remote, and peaceful. There are a ton of games, books, and even some sand toys to enjoy. We had a great time relaxing on the beach and playing games and reading on the porch. We didn't note the lack of A/C or that it's a charcoal grill but we had a great time and would come back. You can tell the house has been loved by generations and it feels cozy

Charming old cabin right on the lake
We love the Oostburg-Cedar Grove lakefront area and come here often. Overall, we had a lovely weekend on the lake. The house is right on the water with a nice sandy beach (not rocky), and even when inside the house it feels like the water is right there. There is a room where you can hang out inside and still enjoy the beach because it’s so close to the water. There’s also a great selection of board games and a nice fire pit area where we had lovely lakeside bonfires every night. The house is a charming old cabin with lots of character. However, the character comes with a few things that are less than luxurious. The mattresses are uncomfortable. The shower’s weak water pressure made showers take 2-3x as long as normal. There was a dangerous hole in the deck area that one of us fell into but luckily wasn’t injured. (We then covered the hole with rocks.) Overall, however, we enjoyed our stay and would return.

Lovely location, charming cottage
We enjoyed are weekend stay at the cottage, especially sitting on the deck watching the waves, boats and sky. We could see the Milky Way one night and we watched a lightning storm cell make it’s way across Lake Michigan another night which was amazing! The beds were very firm which my spouse enjoyed more than I did. The cottage is charming, quiet (except for sound of the waves!) and very close to the water. It feels like you are visiting a place that one family has loved for decades, rather than a cookie cutter VRBO listing. The drive to Sheboygan is quick which was nice.

Escape to the Lake
The cottage was even better than advertised--plenty of room, both inside and out. And each room was full of games, books, beach gear, etc., so no worries if you forgot anything! I was traveling with my elderly parents, and of course there are a few uneven floors, etc., in this house that has been loved by generations. But all the appliances, plumbing, windows, etc. have been well cared for or updated--and everything was very clean! It's a great place to just sit and listen to the waves : )

Heavenly getaway!
This is a fully equipped cottage! You will enjoy the family history of this Oostburg cottage. We had the most wonderful stay and made special memories! Our 25 year old son proposed to his girl friend on the beach and we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary on July 3 by renewing our vows on the beach with my original wedding dress that still fit! Wow! Also. We enjoyed a fantastic, caring, church service in the village of Oostburg on Sunday morning. Thanks Byrns family. We miss your sister Sue… we have fond memories of her, enjoying the cottage all summer long. May she rest in peace. And may you experience God‘s peace. Thank you for renting out your cottage. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great place
This the 2nd visit for my dog and me. I love the rustic beach cottage look but it has all the modern conveniences if you want them. I came this time to just have peace and quiet and not watch TV, answer email, or use my phone anymore than necessary ( though all are available). Even though there are a lot of things to do in the area (state parks mostly), this time I chose to just stay at the cottage and go for long walks with my dog and read. We were also able to walk on the beach by the cottage this time. Everything was very clean, the kitchen well-stocked with anything you might want, and the fenced in deck was great for my dog. The neighborhood is nice, too, and we met some great dog-loving people. We plan on being back next year!

Very relaxing. Great location
We had a very nice stay. The location on the lake was perfect and the view from the deck was spectacular. If you like sleeping to the sound of surf, this is the place to be. The cottage is well equipped with everything you might need. The lake level is really high, so there is not as much beach as one would like. However, there was enough to walk along the beach if you don't mind getting a little wet going around rock outcroppings. However, we knew this was the case before going in, and it was no bid deal. We would definitely consider staying here again. It is just very quiet and relaxing.
