Peaceful Mid-century Modern Getaway Cottage steps from Lake Michigan

The Lion's Share Lake House is a fully furnished mid-century modern three bedroom house on a quiet dirt road across from Lake Michigan, in a location that provides endless opportunity for adventure with beach, trails and dunes right outside the door. You can hear and see the waves of Lake Michigan from the large wraparound deck and screened-in porch and access to the public beach is steps from the front door. It is just down the dirt road from Portage Point's popular Sunset House (2 minute walk), and an easy 1 mile walk (10-15 minutes) to Portage Point Inn Resort (for awesome ice cream and snacks) and Portage Lake, and is set in a wooded and private setting that is peaceful and close to many hiking and biking trails. It is also very close to Arcadia Bluffs world-renowned golf course.

Our family has enjoyed this special town for over 20 years and we are still in awe of the beauty and magic of this area. Whether you are looking for solitude and a chance to unplug (there is strong WiFi though!) or a special family vacation, the Lion's Share offers the perfect escape.

In the Lion's Den master bedroom there is a king bed with a brand new memory foam topper and a light as air comforter. It has a beautiful dresser and a desk if you want to get some work done remotely. There are 2 closets and a cozy MCM chair by the wood stove (not for renter usage) that is perfect for reading and relaxing.

In the Portagers bedroom there is one queen pillow top bed, a closet and an antique armoire for clothing. It is quiet and you look out the window into the beautiful woods.

In the Rainbow room there are two twin bunk beds, a cozy chair for reading, a dresser and a spacious closet (with games and puzzles on the top shelf). The rainbow room is the perfect spot for kids. It has an old sewing table filled with markers and crayons as well as some toys to play with.

There is one full bath on the main floor complete with original mid-century modern countertops and one 3/4 bath in the basement. It has an open living room/dining room with a wood burning fireplace and a smart tv, a fully equipped kitchen (with a new stove, microwave and dishwasher), and a wrap-around porch, including a screened-in lounge area with a brand new outdoor sectional couch. This is a dog-friendly and child-friendly property.

Amenities included: Friday morning trash service, cleaning and sanitizing, parking for two vehicles, brand new bath towels and bedding, plenty of beach towels, a wheelbarrow of beach toys, beach umbrellas, children's board games, puzzles, a new washer and dryer, soap, shampoos and lotion, Bluetooth house speaker, and a brand new gas grill.

The Lion's Share Lake House is located close to a variety of outdoor recreation activities. Some nearby trails are The Manistee National Forest, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Sleeping Bear Heritage Bike trail, and several Grand Traverse Land Conservancy preserves with hiking and biking trails. Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course is 15 minutes away. Canoe and river float trips start nearby on the Platte, Betsie, Crystal and Manistee Rivers, as well as great fishing on the local rivers, inland lakes and glorious Lake Michigan itself. There are also many local pick your own blueberry and strawberry farms as well as places for local eggs and produce.

For some delicious food, drinks and live music we are close to The Portage Point Inn and Resort in Onekama, Storm Cloud Brewing Company in Frankfort, Northern Natural Cider House and Winery in Kaleva, Iron Fish Distillery in Thompsonville, Crystal Mountain, and North Channel Brewing Company in Manistee. You can drink delicious locally made beers/ciders as well as sample the various foods from these lively, local and kid-friendly establishments. Many of these places have weekly live music that is also family-friendly.

Our Lucky Find in Onekama
3 roomy bedrooms and a spacious open concept living /dining/kitchen easily accomodated all 6 of us; 2 grandparents, daughter, son inlaw , and 2 grandsons ( 4 and 7 yrs old ). Additionally a large screened in sun room and large out door deck added square footage that would accomodate even larger groups than ours A short walk down the drive and we were at a sandy beach that is second to none in any part the world that we have visited. Everything was very clean, the beds cozy and comfortable and all linens fresh, of good quality , coordinated and plentiful including both bathroom and beach towels. The hosts had not skimped on essentials..toilet tissue, paper towel, dish detergent coming imediately to mind. A couple of cool mornings required us to turn on the baseboard heater in the dining room and as advised by the hosts, it warmed the area very quickly and was needed only for a short time. A small point but much appreciated, the coded lock for entry did not involve a key in a lock box AND was large enough that it was readible without glasses..thanks Amy ! Lastly, we did not need it often but when we did communication with our hosts was always prompt, helpful and friendly.

Location!!!!
This house is so sweet, a great stay for our time this summer. The host is a wonderful communicator, the check out process is easy, and the beds are super comfy. Loved the views. What is so awesome about this spot though is for sure the proximity to Lake Michigan. You can just pop right down to the beach, have a fire with your friends/family… eat some smores and watch an incredible sunset. Onekama is a charming town… we actually almost moved there before deciding on the UP. For a summer rental this was fantastic, and I can only imagine what it is like the fall. There is excellent golf nearby, Tribal properties, great restaurants in manistee and traverse. Highly recommend checking out st Ambrose if you like craft beer. But seriously, can’t imagine the access to Lake Michigan being any better on another property at this price point and with this charming of a house.

Lake Michigan
The location is great. Across the dirt road from the public beach, was exactly as described. The beach area was very nice too. Lots to do in the area, we stayed very busy. The down side was the well water, we wouldn’t drink it so we had to buy water for drinking and coffee etc. I used to live on a property with a well and I know what it takes. The property was not clean when we checked in, I think maybe it was the first rental of the season and they didn’t go through it.

Wonderful Beach Getaway
The Lion’s Share Lake House was a perfect fit for our family of 4 and dog. We loved hanging out with an open floor plan and screened-in porch. There’s an all-weather wrap around sofa in the porch that made evening hang outs very relaxing - no mosquitoes or rain to worry about. The kitchen is fully equipped which was great for us because we cooked all of our meals. The bedrooms were spacious and cozy and the mattresses were very comfortable which you don’t always get with vacation rentals. There are plenty of windows for fresh air, ventilation and listening to waves. The property surrounding the house is beautiful and wooded which allows for a lot of scenery and privacy. The lake access is literally across the street and one house over. We walked the beach all the way to the north one morning and discovered so many beautiful rocks. Dog walking on the beach and the beach road was an absolute joy. The property owner was very friendly, easy to communicate with and responsive to our questions. This is a great rental and we definitely hope to return next year!

Location location location!
Great location! Nice quite area. The house could stand many updates though. It was very dark and musty smelling which we got used to. The downstairs bathroom was quite basic, as per description. The kitchen was well supplied other than dull knives. We met the owners upon arrival and they were friendly and accommodating with the one issue we had. It was a great family week and we enjoyed our stay!

Amazing location
This property sits on a wooded, dirt road, across the street and yards away from an accessible Lake Michigan beach. The location is incredible. The main room of the house is very comfortable and livable. The beds were impeccable in a way they often are not in rental houses--very comfortable, with duvets and quilts freshly laundered. The owner is responsive and open.

Rustic gem
What this little house in the woods lacks in bling, it delivers in comfort. The roomy back porch is a great place to enjoy the lovely wooded property. Although not directly on the beach, it is close enough to fall asleep to the lull of the waves. The beautiful beach is just steps away. The house is stocked with everything you might need for a peaceful Michigan getaway.

Lion's Share Cottage
Had a great week. Good location. The beach equipment was appreciated. A few comments: A better selection of sharp kitchen knives would be helpful. Also, microwave-friendly coffee mugs would be nice. The tub drain is slow. Although there is is hose on the dehumidifier in the basement, it does not drain through the hose and the bucket on the dehumidifier fills up and must be emptied.

We had a great stay at this cottage. The location is spectacular. The cottage is cozy and met the needs of our family of 6 (including our dog). The location is super central to many activities in Frankfort, Arcadia, Manistee and even Long Lake. Traverse city and the dunes are not too far either. All in all we had a wonderful time and were able to detach from our daily grind.

Cottage in the woods
This cottage, steps from Lake Michigan, had some unique qualities not always found in rentals. There is a large deck and a screened in porch, as well as updated bedrooms and new appliances in the kitchen. Because the cottage is completely surrounded with trees, it remains cool enough to probably never require air conditioning. However, also because of all the trees, it is quite dark. It is built on a sand dune, so there are quite a few steps required to get into the cottage. This was not a problem for any of us at this time, but it could be for someone. Some of the furnishings are beautiful antique pieces and add to the charm of the place. I was only disappointed in the fact that the second bathroom was in the basement/garage, which meant that, for the most part, six of us were sharing one bathroom. We had a great time and appreciate all of the furnishings that came with the cottage. Loved the sunsets and the beach, too.

Great stay in the woods at the beach
The setting was fantastic in the woods, yet just a quick walk onto the amazing sandy beach of Lake Michigan. The deck was a great place to sit in the shade of the trees, listening to the waves on the shore. A family of deer with 2 fawns visited every day. I slept amazingly well in the most comfortable bed I’ve ever had in a rental, lulled to sleep by the waves. Amy was very friendly, and provided great information about the area, including some restaurants, a cidery, a brewery, and a distillery that we hadn’t been to before. We also loved the water from the artesian spring up the road. The house had plenty of space for us, and the WiFi was good enough for my husband and I both to work during the day. We will definitely stay again if we’re traveling to Onekama.
