Casa Modesta is unique. Winter and summer, guests will find they should never have to compromise on the levels of comfort they enjoy at home. From the joy of cooking in the fabulously well-appointed kitchen to the bliss of rejuvenating sleep afforded by the luxurious beds, everything has been carefully planned and designed to make this a genuinely five star experience. As its name suggests, Casa Modesta presents itself as a simple cottage which, although recently rebuilt, retains much of its original character. Modesty, however usually belies a beautiful secret waiting to be discovered and our property is no exception to the rule. Walking through the front door of Casa Modesta is like opening a jewel box. The natural neutral tones of the building's facade do not prepare you for the richness of colour and texture inside. Outside, guests can take a walk through rows of almond trees or sit by the swimming pool and watch the sunset turn the vineyards orange and purple.

There is no doubt that Sicily has many grand palazzos and villas which offer holidaymakers spectacular views, and spacious accommodation. Along with the hefty rental charge however comes, inevitably, dodgy plumbing, uncomfortable beds, ill equipped kitchens and no central heating. The owners of this property have prioritised comfort over everything.

The love and care poured into the restoration of this rustic almond pickers’ storehouse is evident from the natural render and stone detailing on the outside of the building to the double height feature stone wall in the main living area. Interior walls are plastered with stucco rather than rendered with concrete which gives them a luxurious cool smooth feel. The walls of the main building are two feet thick which ensures the heat of the day is kept out and, in winter months when the usually balmy days become cooler at night, all is cosy and warm inside.

In the kitchen guests will find everything they need to transform the incomparable local fish, vegetables and fruit into healthy and delicious feasts. There is a top of the range under counter oven/grill, a gas hob, fridge freezer, dishwasher and plenty of cutlery and utensils, pots and pans. Opening the large cupboard doors in the living area will reveal shelves of beautiful crockery and glassware. Meals on the terrace are made all the more magical when the table is adorned with jewel coloured glasses, exotically glazed dishes and, of course, plenty of candles and lanterns.

The main living area also has a comfortable sofa and a television for evening relaxation. There are plenty of good books to share around and a Sonos sound system to provide the soundtrack to your evening.

The master bedroom has a king size oak canopy bed. The bed linen is crisp white Egyptian cotton with a super comfortable Eve mattress. There is a large French antique wardrobe and a glass sliding door leading out to a private terrace. The luxuriously appointed en suite bathroom has two basins, shower and toilet.

The mezzanine provides one of the many hidden delights of Casa Modesta. A stunning picture window which spans almost the whole width of the upper floor. The view from this window is gorgeous, especially at sunset. Guests can stay in two singles or one superking bed and will enjoy bed linen and mattresses just as luxurious as in the master bedroom. There is also a trundle bed for an extra child. Privacy is provided by a panel of Indian carved screens extending across the mezzanine.

The large family bathroom can be found just off the main living area. It has an oversized shower and a wardrobe style linen cupboard.

In the utility room, guests will find a washing machine, iron and ironing board and general cleaning materials.

There are three air conditioning units regulating the temperature of the main living area, mezzanine and master bedroom and under floor heating in the living area, master bedroom and both bathrooms to provide gentle even warmth in the cooler months.

Totally fabulous!
We stayed in this house for two weeks in September, and could not have been more impressed. We have rented many houses over the years, and this one is a stand out, particularly the wonderful landscaping that included a variety of plants and trees (I think we counted 6-7 different varieties of food-bearing trees!). Also of note, which we had never experienced before, was the "self cleaning" nature of the pool which meant there were no bugs floating around or other detritus. Truly remarkable! Vanessa, our host, could not have been more accommodating and provided an abundance of helpful information. Pietro and Guisi were lovely, and around to help, when needed. As there were two different outdoor table locations around the house, providing two splendid views, we ate dinner at home every night, using the outdoor grill. For New Yorkers, this place was paradise!

Vanessa went above and beyond helping us when our flights had been cancelled and rescheduled several times to make sure we got the best out of our trip that was cut short. The house is so peaceful and cozy. The pool and grounds are so lovely and a wonderful place to relax.

Excellent villa
Well restored farmhouse, but relatively small, however you want for little, all quality fittings in the house. The star is the out side space, swimming pool excellent, all problems we had were resolved quickly, even taking away stray dog! The area is not a primary tourist place, more a market garden region, tomato’s especially, locally they seem to an issue with rubbish, as the local council has abandoned collection, but the villa is immaculate.

Serene Sicilian retreat
The house, gardens and pool were fabulous and perfect for a family month away to enjoy a slice of living in Sicily. The communication and assistance provided by Vanessa was brilliant and so helpful and helped us to fully enjoy our stay here. The location set almost the olive and almond groves and overlooking the vines surrounded by fruit trees, herbs and cacti was wonderfully calming and so peaceful. It was great to meet the neighbouring farmer and see the harvesting of the grapes and olives on our doorstep which is so much what this area is about. The fresh produce especially local Pachino tomatoes were wonderful and perfect for staying in cooking a lovely dinner and enjoying with the local Nero D’Avola wine. With the small town only a 5 min drive away for everyday essential groceries and fresh bread and San Lorenzo beach club so close with a superb sandy beach and the beauty of baroque Noto only 20mins away for a late breakfast or leisurely lunch and stroll we couldn’t have wished for a better location. We managed to visit Marzamemi, Capo Passero , Ragusa, Modica, Scicli and Chiaramonte Gulfi all from the house by car and recommend them all especially Ristorante Majore in Chiaramonte Gulfi for a truly authentic Sicilian lunch focussed on local specialty pork. Time flew and we didn’t want to leave!

Nearly Impossible to leave - perfect and peaceful
Our best summary description of Casa Modesta is "harmonious". It is a lovely house in a delightful garden setting surrounded by olive and almond trees with vines being grown next door. Very peaceful and relaxing. The house's design has been carefully considered and is maintained to a high standard. It is very well equipped, clean and comfortable including outdoor seating. Vanessa is a great host and provided lots of helpful information and advice which meant we got the most out of our local sight-seeing, restaurants etc. The welcome pack and opportunity to purchase a Sicilian supper for your arrival was very welcome, plentiful and to be recommended. We also enjoyed the Fuedo Maccari local wine... you can't get much more local! Casa Modesta more than lives up to its five star rating, we had a very happy stay, and on discovering no-one was coming in immediately after us, had major problems refraining from staying on. We will certainly return.

Beautifully designed character house in unspoilt countryside, peace and good vibes
We loved Casa Modesta. It is set in a flower filled garden, with small lawns, terraces and surrounded by a landscape of olive trees, vineyards, scattered traditional farmhouses and view towards the distant hills above Noto. We forego the local beaches for the lovely swimming pool, peace and quiet - even the neighbouring farmer bashed his olive trees quietly ! There is so much historic interest close by, Noto Antica is worth exploring, atmospheric and hidden away, rambling ruins along the ridge. Vanessa’s detailed info was great, saved time and was very useful - the App for finding bakery etc really good, fresh warm ciabatta even at 5pm! The local wine, red and rose Fuedo Maccari is quite delicious - bought from the roadside ‘cantina’ you can see from the house. Vanessa was very helpful and quick to respond to any queries at the booking stage and whilst we were there. We would love to return.

Small beautiful rural cottage with great pool and close to excellent sandy beach club & small town
This is a lovely family owned villa suitable for couples with / without kids. 2 adults 2 kids was fine though if going to bed at different times may have been bit harder as second bedroom is a mezzanine. Beds very comfy, air con very effective. Showers great with no hot water issues. Good storage in bedrooms. The kitchen and bbq facilities all really good. Great washing machine. Pool was lovely and the seating around it plentiful and comfortable. Flies were a nuisance but I guess you get some insects troubling you wherever you are around here. Other little bother on some days was the neighbours generator used for an agricultural function of some sort. Other than that it was tranquil. We’d certainly come back again if we return here. Still have places we didn’t visit and we aborted our walk to cava grande as it was 41 degrees when we got there!

Lovely! Fantastic stay
What a beautiful place to stay. The house was charming and well-stocked and we spent a lot of time in the lovely pool just taking in the surroundings with our two teenagers. Vanessa went above and beyond, booking us reservations with the best views, providing recommendations and always answering any inquiries we had. We also managed to cook our own fresh seafood dinners with shrimp and calamari from the local fishmonger. Trips to the nearby beaches and to Noto capped it all off, but have to admit that just staying at the house was amazing too. We have already recommended to friends and family.

Luxury in a rural setting
This is a superbly modernised, clean and well maintained property, one of the best we have experienced. It has a beautiful rural setting, surrounded by an olive grove and vineyard. Outstanding features of the villa are the modern kitchen and bathroom fittings and the wonderful swimming pool. The owners are very responsive, helpful and keen to ensure the success of your stay, with many tips and insights to help you throughout. The housekeeper is also a great asset, particularly if you can understand some Italian. Altogether, a first class choice and thoroughly recommended.

We had a wonderful 2 weeks here. Beautiful house, pool and gardens.
The house if beautifully designed. We are a family of 5 and the house worked well for us. The kitchen/living area is a bit small for 5 but to be honest it didn’t really matter as we spent the whole time outside. The pool area and gardens are stunning so it was difficult to ever leave but when we did we really enjoyed visiting local towns, beaches and restaurants. Would highly recommend it.

A lovely place to relax and unwind
We had a wonderful stay at Casa Modesta. Having arrived late at night in the dark, it was heavenly waking to see the beautiful pool and gardens in the daylight. The property has everything you need for a comfortable stay including a barbecue and sonos speaker! Vanessa provided really detailed information and responded quickly to any queries - it is obvious she loves the place and wants you to have a really good stay, Thank you, we were sad to leave.

An oasis in a great area of Sicily
The four of us enjoyed our stay at Casa Modesta immensely. The house is perfectly set up for an easy vacation, and the gardens and pool were incredible. Waking up to the scent of lavender outside (in full bloom in the middle of May) was a treat. The Owners are responsive and helpful, and we would recommend this house and location for others looking to explore this corner of Sicily. We took several day trips - Modica, Noto, Siracusa - and the Valley of the Temples - but were always glad to return, jump in pool, and have an aperitif on the upper terrace. The best way to enjoy sunset with views towards the sublime landscapes surrounding the house.

A smartly decorated property in rural southern Sicily
A great location overlooking 360 degrees of fruit trees and almond groves. Beautiful swimming pool and gardens around the house. Easy drive to get provisions in Pachino. Great restaurants at Marzamemi. Vindicari Nature Reserve is just down the road. We had a great time.

Just as we'd imagined!
Location, location, location! Casa Modesta is away from the crowds, quiet, beautiful. The house is attractively decorated, the pool is stunning, and the grounds are like a botanical garden. We did very lite cooking, but equipment was available to do serious food prep if we’d wished. We appreciated the thoughtful touches: complimentary snacks, supper waiting in the fridge, supplies to tide over until shopping could be accomplished, plenty of hangers, laundry basket, lots of clothes pins, towels for the pool, books, Sonos, maps, dining recommendations. Best of all, the portable wi-fi device helped us navigate both by car and by foot, Syracusa, Modica, Noto, and all the smaller villages. Vanessa and her family clearly want their guests to be comfortable and to appreciate the area as they so obviously do.

Perfect week
Casa Modesta is the first place we have ever stayed where I wouldn't change a thing. The Villa was the perfect size for 4 adults and our 2 and a half year old. The villa itself isn't the biggest you will come across but the space had been utilised perfectly. The main bedroom is a delight to wake up in, the kitchen/living room area is all that you could hope for in a holiday villa. The grounds and pool area are stunning! Our daughter had us up at 7am every day and straight into the pool. We had our lunches and dinners by the poolside with a great view of the neighbours farm. Vanessa was the best host we have ever had. Always available and always had the answers! I could go on and on about our time at Casa Modesta. In fact we only ended up eating two meals out as we just wished we were back there. I'm certainly not one to revisit hotels/villas but would happily spend another week here. Thanks so much for an amazing holiday. Tom, Lucy & Lilija.

Fabulous property
This is a superbly appointed property with well thought out accommodation inside and out, and a fantastic pool. We have stayed in all sorts of places throughout Tuscany, Umbria, Marche and Puglia, but would be hard-pressed to find anywhere as decent as this. If, like us, you want a quiet stay in the right property, away from it all, this is the place for you. Highly recommended.

Simply Wonderful
We visited Casa Modesta for the second time last month with our 4 year old, and fell in love with the place all over again. We meant to do a bit more exploring, but found ourselves staying put and enjoying the beautiful garden, pool and going for nice lunches locally in Marzamemi. We did visit Portopalo, and use one of the restaurant recommendations from Vanessa (Scala). The staff were really friendly and there food was amazing. The three of us have agreed that we want to come back again for more of the same!

Perfect, stylish retreat
From the moment we arrived at Casa Modesta (to a delicious pre-prepared Sicilian supper, plus essentials for the next day already helpfully in the cupboards), we knew this was going to be a great holiday. The house is stunning - furnished beautifully and equipped with everything you could need in a stylish and comfortable home from home. The grounds are beautiful and spacious, the location is great (supermarket and great restaurants are very short drives away) and the owner Vanessa is both responsive and a mine of local information and recommendations. It's everything you would hope for from the pictures and more. Highly highly recommend!

Dreamy little home away from home
We loved our stay at Casa Modesta and were sad to leave. It was the perfect combination of rustic comfort with modern touches. Unfortunately for us we were there in the Spring before warmer temperatures allow for the pool and outside area to be utilized--it is a beautiful space they have created outdoors with patio, dining space, etc. Vanessa has also planted lovely gardens around the house and they are perfect compliment to the surroundings of olive trees and native fauna. There is a lot to do in the towns and areas around the home and we never lacked for a fun adventure, delicious restaurant or awe-inspiring architecture and ruins. We loved it!

Lovely week at Casa Modesta
This villa is exactly as described. Beautifully renovated and comfortable. Pool and Gardens are also a treat. We loved the local beach and fresh fish. We went to several of Vanessa's restaurant recommendations and they were all really great. Great food. No fuss and lovely locations. A visit to Noto is a must. It was our first visit to Sicily and we will certainly be back.
