Although the staff we encountered were fine and the lake view is beautiful, the condition of the "cottage" we stayed in was terrible. It had not been renovated and apparently not recently occupied. It had cobwebs, spiders and bugs (some should be expected given its location) and the walls and floor were quite dirty. The rate was what would be expected at a five-star resort, which this is not.
Viamede's location on Stoney Lake is outstanding and the lodge offers all kinds of water toys including kayaks and paddleboards. The rooms are nice, but parts of the resort have seen better days. The halls could use a coat of paint and the decks need some work.
The very best part of Viamede is the dining room at Mt. Julian. Incredible food, fantastic service in an historic building. We got the five courses with the wine pairing...definitely worth the $$$
When booking my stay at Viamede I read the reviews but can you tell you that many are stale dated. The Resort is know own by Ben and he is definitely making improvements right across the board. It is possible that previous visitors didn't find things up to par but I think previous owners probably let things slid before selling. I think now they would have a much improved experience. One also has to keep in mind this is cottage country. For us that are 3rd and 4th generation cottage people we well appreciate how buildings shift in the winter months and know a year on a cottage property is like 5 wear and tear years in the city. Weather conditions; cold weather, spring thaws all do a number on buildings and conditions of verandas and out buildings.
Our room was large with a fireplace and large deck. A fridge for our wine to cool and Muskoka chairs to sit in and reflect on the day/read before dinner. Everything was quiet on the property and trails for walking.
Beautiful view and lake.
The Mount Julian restaurant was a culinary experience and service was excellent.
We will be back!
We joined a guided hike which included Toby, the resident golden retriever. The hike passed through the farm where we saw pigs, turkeys. The wooded areas on the resort grounds were very beautiful and we made many stops for photography. Then we went on a guided boat ride on Stoney Lake which is dotted with islands and the scenery rivalled that at the Thousand Islands. We enjoyed our short 3 day stay and will surely return in future.
Ran into some trouble on the drive to Viamede - both boat trailer tires blew (when does that happen!). CAA managed to get us safely to the resort. The resort staff was very considerate and helped get everything sorted out. The rest of the weekend was very relaxing and the lake is beautiful.
This was our first visit and we were pleasantly surprised. Our room was great, lots of space and wonderful view. Staff could have been a little friendlier, and more knowledgeable about tourist attractions in the vicinity. Once fitness centre reopenes with indoor pool stay will be better. Breakfasts were awesome. I will come again.
For $345/night you got:
- a nice old cabin that had gone through a cheap and poorly deisgned renovation
- no phone in room
- no mirror in bathroom
- poor water pressure for shower
- headboards not attached to bed
- trim and furniturethat looked cheap
- curtains that hung a foot onto the floor and didn't fit the windows
- a tv set on the kitchenette wall you could barely see from naywhere where you could dit to watch it
- a good buffet breakfast.
Beautiful scenery and views of the lake.Very quiet.Large rooms, comfy bed, very clean grounds.Hotel staff very friendly. Resort has charm.

Viamede under new management? Needs TLC
Great Experience, friendly staff, lots of amenities. We came by boat - by far the COOLEST way to do Viamede. It works out well for some to stay on the boat and for others to split on a room or a cottage. Cottages even accept dogs!! I though it was great they had a centrally located eating area where you could BBQ your own food. Some good eats in the dinning restaurant (or more informal pub eats at the boathouse pub (I think?). I heard the pub was to be torn down for something else - DON'T! My 10 year old LOVED playing on free pool table (not the greatest table or pool cues but was never busy) with my friends.
On the subject of pool, they actually have a nice mid size swimming pool in a great location. Great temp, and not too much chlorine. There is a nice beach and a water trampoline and water tower that were oodles of fun.
Watercrafts looked nice, but didn't have a chance to go. Frisbee golf looked enticing (wear deet), but we didn't try.
There are a few unsatisfactory items that the management could stand to fix up. For example, if you are going to advertise you have bikes, then have enough for a whole group to go, say, 10 or more. And please fix the gears and breaks so they are in working order. I can deal with rough biking trails, but the signage needs repairing/upgrading (we got lost). The hot tub area could stand a reno too.
All in all a good place, but I'd love to see those details take it up a notch in future to keep it a great return destination.

Not really worth the price
Let me first start off by saying I am not one to complain but the conditions of the Resort and the food made me feel like I had been ripped off.
I recently stayed for one night with my wife for our anniversary and our last night out before the birth of our first child. When we arrived we attended the Mount Julian Inn for dinner, my dinner was incredibly salty almost too spiced to eat (pheasant) and my wife had the Bison which for $38 dollars had grizzle in it. After dinner my my wife was super exited for a swim in what we were told was an outdoor heated swimming pool. The pool was in no way heated and upsetting a pregnant woman is not a good idea. I noticed as we sat in the pool the lack of maintenance of the outdoor walls, railings and pickets. In several spots there was peeling and cracking paint, rotten and missing spindles and a closed staircase. The room was very nicely decorated although the floor was completely slanted and would basically send you running into the bathroom. The bathroom sink vanity had peeling and missing portions and there was a hole in the back of the door. Overall it was not worth the stay.

Safety issues concerning shower stall and stairs to room in lodge.
I wanted an evening away where I could enjoy a view of the water, a good meal and some quiet relaxation. Viamede Resort was exactly what I needed!
The room was spacious with a lovely balcony with a view of the lake. The breeze coming off the water made the air conditioning in the room unnecessary. I made myself comfortable on the couch waiting for my friend to arrive and almost dozed off.
We had a casual dinner on the deck of the Boathouse Pub enjoying good conversation and a beautiful view of Stoney Lake. The food was delicious and the waitress pleasant and attentive without being bothersome. (We shared the plank of appetizer samplers)
We watched a movie in our room which we borrowed from the front desk. They have a good selection of movies, books or games to borrow. The bed was super comfortable and since my friend commandeered the couch, I had a king all to myself!
I hope to go back for a longer stay and plan to take my husband. It's a lovely spot!

Food and service!
Service in dining room very slow. Food was cold. Let front desk know but no response. When u r spending $30.00 for a steak dinner, u don,t expect it to be cold.

The complete resort requires a face lift. Which at the present they are undertaking. The Pub requires a new menu everything of deep fried venue. the outside sitting area to small and you can't sit inside(very hot) if it is a hot day. The liquor license has to be changed to allow having a drink in other outside areas other than the pub.The dining room has to offer a wider variety of food at a more reasonable price. They must get rid of those powdered eggs at the breakfast buffet and offer a better variety of eggs.
