One Gidleigh Park. Unique luxury cottage in magical woodland, Chagford, Devon

Surrounded by it's own beautiful large garden the cottage is situated at Gidleigh Park in the wooded River Teign valley on rugged Dartmoor. At the fringes of the vibrant, attractive village Chagford with all it's amenities. It's ideal for romantic breaks or 4 friends. The seclusion, privacy and clean air will really appeal to those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday city life at any time of year.
This unusual house in the heart of Devon was originally constructed as the Cook's residence on the estate of the private house that subsequently became the 2 Michelin Starred Gidleigh Park Hotel. Recently lovingly restored and extended the luxury boutique interior now houses a combination of beautiful modern designer and antique furnishings.
The house comprises of a large well kitted out cooks kitchen with dining area. Separate utility room with sink, washing machine, tumble dryer and room for boots and coats. There is a sitting room with modern glass extension, mezzanine office and snug and two double bedrooms each with their own bathrooms. Doors open out to two decked terraces with separate dining area's at the front and back of the house. Stunning large garden mainly laid to lawn and herbaceous borders surrounded by fields and ancient woodland. Help yourself to vegetables and herbs from our raised beds when in season. The garden is enclosed from the lane by our large drystone wall.
Luxuries provided include bathrobes, 600 thread count Egyptian cotton towels and bed linen and locally produced vegan palm oil free soaps. There are comforting throws, firewood and kindling, large TV and DVD player, movie and CD library, WIFI and use of two music systems.
There is a diverse book library and many recipe books and board games.
Two log burners, one in the dining area and one in the sitting room add to the romantic feeling. These compliment the oil fired underfloor and radiator heating.
Welcome hamper of locally sourced products is included.
There are kitchen basics including tea, coffee capsules, oil, vinegar, herbs and spices.
Also the house is stocked with all the usual essentials you would expect in a working home such as dishwasher and laundry powder, an iron and ironing board and hairdryer.
Private gated off road parking for 2 cars.
The house is situated at the upper reaches of the wooded River Teign valley in the foothills of beautiful Dartmoor with it's granite tor's, Bronze Age circles, mossy cleaves and wild ponies. There are countless walks from the doorstep of the house up on to the moor, into the lowland countryside and to the local pubs and restaurants. Alternatively get up on a horse to explore - there is a good riding school not far away. Visit the Sandy coves of the Southern Devon coast and the huge surf beaches of the North. The largest outside swimming pool in Devon is at a beautiful location in Chagford next to the River Teign.
There is a spa, gym, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, indoor pool, 18 hole golf course and tennis courts at the nearby Bovey Castle Hotel, all five star facilities available to non-residents.
We are a 5 minute stroll from the 2 Michelin starred Gidleigh Park Hotel (but totally private from it) and 1.5 miles to the attractive stannary town of Chagford with it's handsome 15th and 16th century buildings. Voted best village to live in the UK in the Sunday Times 2015 guide. It has several pubs, restaurants, cafes, boutiques and large range of useful shops including an excellent hardware and moorland clothing shop, butcher, greengrocer and delicatessen.
Details of the area, the many restaurants, walks, pubs and places of local interest are all in our House Book Guide.
Chagford is an easy 4 miles from the main A30 and Gidleigh Park is a further short 5 minute drive from the village.
Much of Dartmoor is remote so if you are looking to explore comprehensively and get to the coast then a car is a must. Either bring your own or hire one at Exeter St David's Station if you arrive by train. We can recommend a car hire company.
Alternatively, you can simply take a taxi from the station at Exeter and spend your time here exploring on foot. Chagford is a beautiful 20-25 minute walk or 5 minute drive from the house.
Prices are based on 2 people sharing - each additional person is £10 per person per night. The house sleeps a maximum of 4 persons. One small to medium non shedding mature dog per party is permitted at a cost of £50 per stay after discussion with the owners.
10% discount for stays of a week or more, 20% discount for 1 month or more.

Idyllic cottage in a very quiet location.
Really enjoyed out time at One Gidleigh Park, the property was immaculate throughout and very well equipped with everything being of high quality and exactly as represented by the photos. The gardens surrounding the cottage are very nice and well maintained and at the rear of the property blend into some dense and very steep woodland facilitating the sighting of various forms Devonian wildlife from time to time including a lost army patrol who had got lost in the woods on night-time manoeuvres and made their way through the garden trying to find their way back to a road 😆 The location is exceptionally quiet and private being at the end of a mile long single track road that terminates at the luxury Gidleigh Park Hotel. Many walks start or emanate close to the cottage and access to Dartmoor and the surrounding countryside is good. The nearby village of Chagford is very quaint with several nice pubs and some interesting shops. Be wary though if you are a nervous driver, many of the roads in the area are single track with some steep gradients! Communication with the host was polite and responsive and the only slight negative for us was that you cannot control the heating yourself. If you want to change the temperature you have to ask the host who will change it remotely - not ideal, but not enough of a niggle that we would not come back. On the whole highly recommended if you want a quiet peaceful break in an outstanding location.

A beautiful treasure
What a beautiful place to stay. So tranquil and the ultimate place to relax. The property inside and out has such a high level of finish and looked after so well. Look out for the deer in the forest behind - such a treat. Will definitely be booking again.

Beautiful house and location
The house is down a peaceful lane and is very private. The garden is beautiful with a hill view at the front and it backs on to woods. Deer, owls and beautiful night skies. Inside, the living area and beds are very comfortable, there are luxurious showers and a huge modern kitchen. The owner Adam was very thoughtful and helpful at all times. We highly recommend One Gidleigh Park.

Perfect countryside retreat
One Gidleigh Park was the perfect place for my wife and I (plus our four-legged companion) to have a relaxing week away. Once there, the car hardly moved and we spent our days walking and exploring the wonderful Dartmoor countryside, the local village (a 30 minute walk) of Chagford or just relaxing in the lovely garden (occasionally interrupted by deer wandering through). Afternoon tea at Gidleigh Park Hotel was a well earned treat after all the walking.

Another Wonderful Stay
Our second visit to 1GP, and just as wonderful as the first time. A lovely welcome basket and stunning location allowed us to take a decent break from work and relax. Some great walks from the property and you have to try the Afternoon Tea at Gidleigh Park - just don't plan to eat dinner as well !

This was our second stay and everything was just as good as the first time. Everything spotless and working well. Such a wonderful location and beautiful walks straight from the door. Weather not so kind this time but it's a great house for hunkering down on a rainy afternoon.

English Paradise
We had such a wonderful stay in this very special house. The house absorbs the stunning surroundings which consists of a very private, well kept garden with mature trees and beautiful flowers. You can faintly hear the nearby waterfalls when your in the garden, which is a blissful sound. It is immaculately clean and every detail is considered carefully. The kitchen is so well equipped with everything you need. It was exactly what we needed and we came home feeling very relaxed and refreshed after our stay. Thank you for the hamper on arrival, I was a huge fan of the red wine. I would highly recommend this property to anyone, especially if you have a dog as there are some wonderful walks on your doorstep and a helpful guide in the information pack gives you clear directions for walks that we would not have found ourselves. I did not want to go home. Thank you Adam for being such a great host xxx

This is a first class accommodation and everything about it oozes style. The interior has a homely feel with everything you could possibly need. The perfectly manicured garden and attached woods are a delightful bonus. The owners were on hand when required. Massive thank you for the break and definitely returning next year.

Heavenly inside and out
One Gidleigh Park is heavenly inside and out, sitting within a beautiful wraparound garden and woodland beyond, just a short walk from the hotel but completely private. We loved the very spacious interior of the cabin-like bungalow, it was charming. Squeaky clean, well equipped, warm and very welcoming. The food hamper was a lovely touch, as was the doggy biscuit barrel. Attention to detail was very evident, eg. very nice bed linen, lots of wardrobe hangers, sharp kitchen knives, abundant mugs and glasses. I could go on! Difficult to find a negative but will say Wifi was a bit slow! Not a problem though. Thank you Adam and Stephen for a most enjoyable break.

Like a lot of people, we just wanted to get away from everyday life with it’s hustle and bustle. 1 Gidleigh Park was our idea of heaven ! It quite remote, yet within easy reach of the local village with all its amenities there. The property is exceptional and I found it a tranquil , peaceful property, one I didn’t want to leave. Would highly recommend this property if like us, you love privacy, high standards of accommodation, and a very attentive owner whose always at the end of his phone willing to help if needed.

Great Property - Great Location
One Gidleigh Park was everything we were looking for in a short break in Dartmoor. We travelled as 2 x couples and a Cockapoo. This property was perfect with two spacious, luxury double bedrooms and two bathrooms. There was sufficient space for everyone. The living area was spacious but still cozy, and very well decorated. The underfloor heating and log burner was a little treat when we came home after walking all day. The kitchen was well equipped and housed everything we could need. The Garden was beautiful and the only disappointment was that we would not get to make the most of it in the height of spring / summer when it would be at its best. The garden also backs onto a wooded area and we were fortunate enough to relax in bed in the morning, drinking a cuppa and watching the deer, squirrels and foxes. Communication from the owner; Adam, was very good and a 'house book' was provided prior to arrival to give very clear and full instructions upon arrival. There was also good information regarding 'things to do' in the local area. Personal touch: we received a lovely welcome basket with a bottle of wine and essentials including a bag of ice for a little G&T! Beautiful House in a lovely location and would thoroughly recommend.

Beautiful cottage in a picturesque location
The cottage was stunning, so relaxing and comfortable with lovely walks on your doorstep. So many places to sit and read a book or watch the wildlife after a long walk, we always looked forward to getting back to the cottage. Kitchen is very well equipped, and the recommendation to get food from Farmer Luxton farmers shop was greatly appreciated, the quality of food is second to none. Definitely worth a trip. Would highly recommend a stay at One Gidleigh Park and hope to return again soon!

Beautiful cottage in a stunning setting
Cannot fault this cottage. The setting is absolutely beautiful with ancient woodland to the rear and an immaculate garden with decking to the front. The interior is stylish yet homely and the kitchen is the cleanest and most well equipped we’ve ever seen. Comfy beds, quality linens, hot water on demand; the attention to detail throughout is second to none. We walked through some stunning countryside directly from the door and were welcomed in the pubs of Chagford with our dog without a problem. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend for a relaxing break.
